Yellow.

Filtering behind my closed eyelids…drifting in my in-between dreams…filling my nostrils with its soft, sweet scent…

“Lu!” The tight whisper sharpens my ears. “Get over here!”

“Daddy…” A wispy yet insistent voice replies. “I’m not finished hanging the banner!”

“Oh boy.” The amusement in my mother’s tone is evident. “We really cannot get it together.”

“Honestly, she is probably awake,” a deeper voice adds; hoarseness tinging the ends of his words.

Opening my eyes, I sit up abruptly and look to the foot of my bed.

“Owen knows me a little too well,” I say as they all freeze in place.

My father is setting up my birthday cake on my hope chest at the foot of the bed as my mother places an orange paper crown on his golden head. A green one sits elegantly atop her raven hair. My brother Owen is by the mantle while Luma—the baby of the family—sits on his shoulders trying to hang a hand-painted birthday banner above it.

“I really do!” Owen responds before his mouth widens in that patented Mellark smirk. “Happy Birthday, sis!”

Prompt 42. Group of friends. Economic disaster, no jobs; eventually in desperation someone in the group suggests making a porno for $, the idea takes off, as they work on a script and put out ideas, a lot becomes clear, like who has kinks, who has tried a lot, and that one is an inexperienced virgin. Does the writing experience have consequences to the group dynamic, will they actually film and sell it, will they stay friends? Are any couples or siblings part of the group? Are secrets revealed through brainstorming?

Gloss smirked. “I don’t know! Just seemed like a song you would like—THOM!” He waved another one of their brothers over to join them from across the crowded room. “We need to toast!”

Thom slipped easily through the sea of people, eyeing a redhead adjacent to the men, before making his way to them.

“What’s up?” he asked with a sideways-heavy smile.

“We are going to get Peeta drunk,” Gloss declared. “He’s starting his first day at District 12 Hospital and needs to be thoroughly sloshed before he goes into service.”
