The thermometer was just under ten degrees when i dropped the tailgate. Thirty mph winds were blowing snow that stung my face. Tic and Snaps ran in search of rooster pheasants. Young Snaps struggled in the high winds to smell birds. Tic had no such trouble. He showed the faster and more athletic youngster the value of experience as he put on a clinic. In less than an hour, he had found three roosters for me. I've been doing this long enough to know that when you have a hot dog, you ride that dog. I put Snaps up to enjoy the day behind my old buddy Tic. He went on to finish the day before noon with points on huns and sharptail. It was a balmy 13 degrees when we returned to the truck. The wind was relentless and colored my face red. I didn't do well with the camera. It was too cold to have my gloves off for long. This day marks the end of my Idaho trip. I had an excellent day of hunting, and I was on my way home when I skidded to a stop. I have driven this road 100 times, but today i noticed something I've been looking for since I started writing the book. It's a Fordson tractor! The main character in the book I wrote farms with one, and survives.lol. This is the first one I've ever seen in person. It's as I imagined, Hand crank and everything. Ol' Tic gave 2.5 solid hours in some pretty tame chukar country. That is all he had but I will take it. We got a little bit lucky and found a big covey right off the bat. Some of them scattered out on the rolling hills below. He found enough in that time for me to have gotten a limit but I missed a couple of easy shots. It's a good thing he can't count. Four is enough because he had a blast. I bet, to him, it is worth the limp he will have for a day or two.
