The twins, her friends, the battle facility bosses who had been missing for months at this point, stood just there across the street. Standing in front of Gear Station in the same tattered clothes and strange outfits sheād seen on the news. It was hard to see at a distance in the dark, but silhouetted against the lights of Gear Station, she could tell it was them.
She wanted to run over to them, pull them into a hug and ask them where theyād been, what happened, but Elesa stopped herself. Emmet shifted, and though she couldnāt see what he pulled from his coat, sheād seen the video on the news and could guess.
A smoke bomb.
She had to be careful that they didnāt run.
āAre you okay?ā she called next. She had to know, she had to hear them speak. She had to hear them say yesāand if they didnāt, she just wanted to be able to help.
Elesa stepped into the street, the Emolga perched on her shoulder looking both ways for her. Elesaās eyes remained firmly on the brothers.
āItāitās me, Elesa,ā she called over, taking another step forward. Confusion, she had to remind herself. Theyād seemed confused when interviewed and they ran away.
She ran through what to do with someone who was confused. Introduce yourself, ask questions. If you know the cause, respond accordingly to try and help. If you donāt or if you donāt have the medical expertise to deal with it, call someone who does.
āAh, Miss Elesa.ā
When was the last time Ingo had called her that? He was always so polite, but theyād known each other for years. He hadnāt called her that since they first met.
Emmet put away the presumed smoke bomb and stood idly, though Ingo took a step forward towards her, and that was all the permission Elesa needed to approach them.
Elesa couldnāt help but stare. The scar across Emmetās cheek, through his sideburn, looked relatively fresh (where had he gotten it? How did he get hurt?) Their coats were tattered, stained, repaired (but not dirty. The clothes beneath their coats werenāt dirty either, and in fact looked recently washed). Their hair was longer (Ingoās pulled under his hat, Emmetās pulled back in a low ponytail, both brushed and untangled). It had been some time since they last shaved (but the facial hair they had looked well-maintained).
They looked worse up close. They looked better than she feared.
Elesa swallowed. āAre you okay?ā she asked again, her voice wavering the slightest bit.
āNeither of us are harmed, Miss Elesa,ā Ingo assured her, raising one hand to tip his hat slightly.
There was silence between them for several moments. Elesa was running through what her first aid training had taught her once again, but she couldnāt bring herself to move.
āMiss Elesa.ā She startled when Emmet spoke. Had Emmet ever called her that before? Why now? What changed? She really needed to get them to a doctor. Or homeāwhichever theyād allow her to bring them to.
āI amāā Emmet hesitated. He did not say his name. Maybe it was weird for Elesa to stare at the way his mouth moved so much, but she could see the way his lips shifted, forming an āIā, and then he closed it. He opened it again, and she swore he would finish his normal sentence like he always did, but he stopped once again.
āI am Hunter Kudari.ā Elesa didnāt know what that meant. āThis is my brother, Warden Nobori.ā
Hunter? Warden? Kudari and Nobori?
āWe have been uncoupled from our memories. We are trying to get home.ā
Just like that, everything clicked into place. Elesa stared at him, eyes wide as she pieced together everything. Of course, of course theyād lost their memories. It explained all theā
It didnāt explain the strange clothes. It didnāt explain how much older they seemed. It didnāt explain so much.
Her Emolga chittered at her.
āI am very sorry to have to deliver this news to you, Miss Elesa.ā She wished Ingo wouldnāt apologize. āIt is very clear that you know us and my brother and I would be incredibly thankful if you could help us get back on our proper tracks.ā
āOf course.ā The words came out softer than she meant. āOf course, you guysāyouāre some of my best friends. Of course Iāll help!ā She needed them to know this. If they knew nothing else about her, she at least wanted them to know sheād be there to help with whatever they needed. With everything they needed.
āDo you wantā
āWhich name is mine?ā
Elesa had been about to ask if they wanted to go home, but Emmet interrupted.
She should have realized she needed to tell them that. Heād literally introduced them with names that werenāt their own! He didnāt know to call himself Emmet, heād called himself Kudari. Hunter Kudari and Warden Nobori.
āEmmet. Your name is Emmet.ā
āI am Emmet.ā His face lit up, the smile widening into something eager, joyful. All for something so simple: his own name. Something he hadnāt known for who knows how long (did they even know how long theyād been gone? Where did they go?)
āSo I am⦠Ingo, you said?ā he did not sound sure. The way he said the name, sounded out the syllables, made it clear the name held no familiarity.
Where Emmet was eager, repeating his name, repeating his introduction to himself again and again under his breath, Ingo hesitated. There was uncertainty in his eyes.
āYeah, Ingo. Thatās your name.ā
He pulled the brim of his hat down over his eyes. He did not look her in the face. āThank you, Miss Elesa.ā His voice was quieter than sheād ever heard it.
Ingo was not normally quiet.
Elesa took a deep breath. āCome on,ā she said softly. āIāll take you guys home.ā
āI am Emmet. I have been waiting for this for a long time. Full speed ahead!ā
Elesa tended to leave the news on and running while she went around and got ready or did other things. She used to just do it in the morning, but as of late, sheād started leaving it on while she was home too.
Right now she wasnāt even listening to it, and not even in the room with the TV. She was in the kitchen, washing dishes and barely able to hear it over the sink and her own humming. A bit of music and shaking her hips a little to the beat made the whole thing go by much faster.
Finally Elesa finished up, setting the last pan into the drying rack and drying her hands off on the towel just beside it. With the newfound quiet, she could hear the TV much clearer, though she was hardly listening to it. Some things came through, but she was mostly thinking about her day off tomorrowā
āāseveral sightings of missing battle subway bosses Emmet and Ingoāā
Elesa was paying much more attention now. She rushed into the living room like a charging zebstrika, managing to slam her hip against the side of the table and jam her shin into the side of the couch in her frenzy to get in front of the TV.
She hardly felt it, not when the faces of her missing friends were there on screen.
Elesa gaped at the image displayed on there, not hearing what was being said in the video. Her first thought, despite the fact that theyād vanished out of the blue one day with no trace, was considering what concealer would best hide the bags under their eyes.
Dragons, they looked so tired. Ingoās coat was in tatters, the ends shredded with no hope of being mended without practically replacing the whole thing. Behind him, she could see Emmetās looking more brown than white, so deeply stained that Elesa didnāt think anything could get it out except perhaps a wish on Jirachi.
She startled when the impromptu interview was abruptly ended. She hadnāt heard a word of it, but all of a sudden Emmet grabbed his brother and threw something to the ground. A smoke bomb.
When the smoke cleared, the brothers were gone and the video ended, the news moving on to debate what couldāve happened. Not one word made it through to the gym leader watching.
Why did they run? Elesa could barely breathe. Where did they go?
Elesa reached for the remote and rewound. She had to see this again. She had to know what was going on, what was being said, where theyād been for the last six months.
Why they ran.
Sheād gone back a bit further than intended, but it wasnāt long before the video popped up on screen once again.
New details she hadnāt noticed before stuck out to her on the second watch. The scar going through Emmetās sideburn, the fluff having been trimmed down but now growing back. The strange tunics they wore and the insignias on them made her heart dropāhad they joined some team?
Or, more likely (and far worse): had they gotten forced into one?
When the interviewer asked questions, the brothers seemed startled. Even through the screen, even with their seemingly static facial expressions, Elesa could feel the discomfort radiating off of them.
Ingo started off all polite, just as he always did (just as he always was). āAh, my sincerest apologies, but I must askāwhat are you doing?ā He tapped the microphone. He seemed uncertain. Elesa didnāt understand.
The interviewer asked where theyād been, and when they hesitated, he pushed, asking what had happened. Where had they gone? The world wants to know!
Elesa felt sick to her stomach listening to Ingo stammer out a non-answer. More apologies, more starting and stopping of a sentence that had no substance or answers. Glancing at the microphone anxiously, like he worried it may bite him.
And then Emmet acted, grabbing his brother and taking them out of that place with a smoke bomb. Elesa couldnāt blame him; she too wished she could avoid news coverage sometimes by just disappearing or teleporting awayā¦
ā¦but why? What happened? Why did they look so disheveled?
The chitter of her Emolga spurred her into action. She settled him on her head, though he leapt off and decided to scurry around by her feet instead. That was fine, she needed to get ready.
It was dark out now That interview hadnāt happened that long ago. Most people werenāt going to be out and about, and if the twins were avoiding people, this would be a better time. Nimbasa never slept, but the streets werenāt quite so busy at night.
As she grabbed her purse, slipped on her puffy yellow coat, and grabbed her headphones, Elesa considered what could have happened. As she headed out the door, a guess had solidified in her mind: confusion brought about by whatever harrowing thing had stolen them from their home.
Maybe some villainous team had captured them, done something to them (the idea was almost too much to consider). Maybe some team had tried to force them to aid them somehow, for some reason. Maybeā
Elesa didnāt know what. She could just hope that maybe the bright yellow of her coat would help cut through the confusion, help her help them somewhere more familiar. Somewhere easier.
But if they had made their way back to Nimbasa, they must have some recollection, some idea of where they were meant to be. She needed to check by their homeāand by Gear Station.
Even when Ingo and Emmet are together in Hisui, their memories donāt come back very easily. They have brief glimpses into the life they once lived, but thatās it. Glimpses. Hints. Even side by side, most of the things they put together are from trying to put their very limited pieces together, not actual recollection.
So what do they know? (Well, obviously, not their names.)
Both of them remember a figure like them. Someone just like themselves, but in colors they didnāt wear. Itās not hard to figure out who that is, but rather odd that they didnāt get the vague recollection of their brother until after meeting.
They both also recall a tunnel, a platform, and the shaking and movement of something traveling at immense speed. Whatever it is, the vague glimpse they have of it is fond.
And then thereās the longing. No matter how little they remember of their home, no matter how far it is, thereās a part of them that misses it dearly. Ingo finds it easier to relax into his job in Hisui, though he still seeks out what he can of his past. Emmet is not so complacent, chasing down distortions and anything else he thinks might be their ticket home.
They know they donāt belong here. Even if they canāt remember anything about their homeānot where it is, what itās like, or where they belong in itāthey miss it dearly. They want to go home.

One thing that I think is really fascinating to consider when it comes to Ingo getting sent to Hisui is what scene he left behind.
It is very interesting to have him simply disappear without a trace, but even more interesting to consider what would be left, what confusing puzzle pieces the people that know him are left with to try and find him.
(And of course, I wanna apply this to my au where both brothers disappear)
When Ingo and Emmet disappeared, it was a perfectly normal evening. Theyād finished work, had some good battles during it, and made dinner together while talking about that and other things. Their plans for the rest of the evening were simple: movie night!
Except thereās no more microwave popcorn. Movie night without popcorn? Unheard of. Emmet decides heāll head to the store, itās a short enough walk, and heāll grab some snacks (and a few other small things they could use, but didnāt need badly enough yet for a whole grocery run).
So he heads out the door, bringing just his Eelektross with him. As heās leaving, Ingo rushes out after him, bringing over Emmetās wallet that heād forgotten.
The apartment door left open, because Ingo was going to be outside for less than a minute. Wet dishes in the drying rack, since theyād just been cleaned after dinner. A DVD case set out on the coffee table, the movieās menu already up and waiting for someone to press play. Popcorn seasoning on the counter next to two glasses of caffeine-free iced tea and the empty bottle it had been poured from.
No sign of Ingo and Emmet. No sign of where they could have gone, no sign of why they havenāt returned. Surely they intended to returnāIngoās wallet is still inside, their preparations for movie night still laying out, unused.
Warden Nobori had thought about this very situation before.
Thought about it a lot, really. More than he probably should. Sometimes while resting in his Ladyās basket going up a mountain, or when going over his routes to check for anything that needs to be done, or while cooking, or while doing laundry, or whileā
Well, put simply, Nobori thought about it a lot (among other outlandish scenarios).
The way this one always went in his mind was different.
He imagined he would lock eyes with someone, someone from his past. They would look at him, shocked, and then they would speak. They would say his nameāhis real name, the one heās been missing so dearly. It would slide into the place it left behind in his empty head, and then he would return the call with the mysterious personās name as well.
In his mind, meeting someone always came with a rush of remembering things heās forgotten. Though Nobori knew this was optimistic at best; he doubted everything would return, and maybe nothing would return at all. He knew that. He had himself prepared for the situation.
Or he thought he did. Until he came to stare at his own mirrored face.
Neither man spoke, and Nobori was vaguely aware of Warden Melli glancing between them, back and forth, from Nobori to the man heād brought up to the highlands to meet him.
Kudari, Nobori vaguely recalled. That was what Melli had called him when he brought the man up for them to meet. Heād said other things as well, like how the man didnāt remember his past either.
Maybe, in the new version of the scenario Nobori was conjuring up in his mind, they would both remember one another, shout out each othersā names, and finally uncover the unknown things theyāve surely been missing.
But no memories surfaced. No knowledge, nothing. He was simply looking at his own mirrored face and Kudari was looking back.
Why make a speech before a battle? It was simply the way Nobori had always done it, on the rare occasion he found someone willing. There was one last piece of his personal ritual he needed to add, a select few words in his native tongue that he didnāt know how to translate: āAll aboard!ā
Thinking about Emmet in Hisui and how he ends up looking (particularly in my Missing Name au).
Landing in the Crimson Mirelands is not good for someone in a shiny white coat. There is mud, mud, and more mud. He lands in it when the rift dumps him out, so he canāt even remember a time where it wasnāt partially stained brown. He knows that surely it mustāve been white at one point, but as time goes on the mud stained brown becomes more familiar than the pure white ever did.
Heās gifted a Diamond Clan outfit to wear under his coat at the same time they give him the name Kudari. Much harder to stain!
But that stained coat becomes tattered over time, especially with the dangerous (and thrilling) battles he throws himself at. However, he really does try to repair the holes. It still ends up tattered, but he does his best to sew up the ends and make it last longer.
Another difference in his appearance is that heās taken to walking on his tiptoes. Where Nobori slouches, Kudari walks on his toes. When the brothers finally reunite, that distinct pose they do together isnāt quite identical anymore: Kudari leans back the slightest bit where Nobori slouches forward. They still fit together, but itās not the same as it was.
Theyāre both different now. (Something thatās very, very clear when they eventually find their way home.)
So, for my Submas Missing Name au, where Emmet and Ingo both fall into Hisui (and lose everything including their names), they both adjust quite differently to their environment.
Kudari becomes very acquainted with inefficiency, something that bugs him to no end. He can speak their language enough to be understood, but he cannot explain things well and struggles with finding the right words. He is hard for them to read and doesnāt know how to make himself easier to understand. He does not know how to efficiently do things in his daily life.
(The Diamond Clanās desire to not waste time does not help these feelings in the slightest, though this comes from a misunderstanding of their beliefs. Time learning is never time wasted, but Kudari doesnāt see it that way.)
He wants to do something. He needs some sort of goal, some sort of task. There is some desire that is not being fulfilled and he doesnāt know what it is is.
He knows his next goal, and he sets out for a trek across the wilds. A small one. He will not go too far, heās learned of the dangers by now (especially after his first attempt).

So Iāve got this new Submas au in the works. A classic āsending Emmet into Hisui with Ingoā plot, but with a few key elements:
Neither of them have any memories of before, and no ideas of each other. Theyāre both found by the people of Hisui without a single memory to their nameānot even memories of their very own names.
Where Ingo lands with the Pearl Clan and becomes Lady Sneaslerās warden, Emmet lands with the Diamond Clan. Theyāre given names by their clans, since they donāt have names of their ownāWarden Nobori of Lady Sneasler, and Kudari of the Diamond Clan (inspired by this post by @/doodle-lions)
They spend some time apart, not realizing what theyāre missing out onāand anyone that could put the pieces together and realize that the two look identical ends up conveniently missing the other. Nobori settles into his role as Warden, while Kudari carves out a role for himself and an impressive reputation to go with it.
Eventually, they finally meet, and they are quick to settle into their new lives in Hisui, side by side despite the conflict between their adoptive clans. They part ways at times, Nobori for his duties and Kudari for his fights, but they always find their way back to each otherās sides. They may not know their names, or each othersā names, or anything about the place they came from except that the other was there, but theyāre here together. They do not want to be apart for long.
Eventually they find themselves drawn to that mysterious past of theirs and seek their way home, whatever it is.
