Gladiators is back so here’s a related story… In my 20’s I went to the gym for the FIRST time. So I booked a personal trainer at my local gym.

I swear I’m not making this up.
Rhino introduced me to fitness for the first time.
Rhino (Mark Smith) is a LEGEND and a true Gentleman.
On my third session, a guy comes up to Rhino.
"My time on the rowing machine is getting SO fast!" The guy declares.
Rhino owns the fastest row time in the gym.
Rhino looks at the guy, then points at me:
The guy laughs. My heart falls through my body and rattles around in my toes.
“I’m serious. B’ll smash you.” Rhino laughs.
I pretend I am not “B” but they both see through this ruse.
Rhino escorts me to the Rowing machine. Other gym goers gather round. The guy will go first.
Rhino tells me to support my fellow competitor as he starts his 1000 M row.
In my third visit to the gym ever, I lean down while the guy rows and encourage.
“Go, go, go! You can do it! Strong! Etc” I, B, call.
“Okay, B, you go.” Rhino says, then to the guy: “Now you support B.”
I row as quickly as I can. For Rhino! He bet on me.
The guy is screaming encouragement in my ear. To my surprise, I feel supported, confident and part of something – yes, part of the gym.
I finish the row. Rhino, the guy and me are all laughing and smiling together.
“I need to be sick now.” I say and Rhino calls an end to the session: “See you Friday B.
Now you may be wondering who won the row race? But that’s not what this story is about.
Thanks Rhino. I would never have got into fitness or been comfortable in a gym without your training.
(I did win the row race...)
