Everyone has these stories inside that they tell themselves to comfort themselves, especially when you’re a kid. The stories that are a part of your inner world that you don’t share with anyone, ever. This movie feels like a weird dream someone had where they dreamed they saw the Joker on a late night television show, explaining why he does the things he does and in the dream they understood, and they felt sorry for him, and it felt like a real person. And they wanted to write that down but it didn’t make sense, it was a fan fiction. It was a story that you tell to yourself to comfort yourself and you don’t let it out because you’ve convinced yourself no one else would ever “get it”. It isn’t marketable, it isn’t plausible, it doesn’t make sense.

I think we’re experiencing a significant shift in the media where people are saying “You know what, I’m pursuing that idea anyway.” And they actually make the movie or the book or the whatever or the story that they tell themselves in their head before they go to bed at night.

Look what fucking happens when you make a movie like that— the highest grossing r-rated movie of all time. People going to see it in the theatre six or seven or eight times, a cult following online even though critical reception was divided at best.

Two years ago my friend used to come to me and tell me they felt like they were disappearing. Just slowly evaporating into thin air and no one could stop it. You’re real and I can see you, I would say, but the feeling persisted. And when we left the theatre last week they said “I’ve never heard anyone else talk about that. About feeling like you’re disappearing, like you might not actually exist.”
