If Warden and Paige decided to join Twitter, what would their @s be?
I can think of a few options.Ā
Warden:Ā
@ArcturusMesarthim (because heād take it so seriously and think it had to be his full and proper name)Ā
@SleepDealer (when Eliza explains that it can be something that isnāt necessarily your actual name)Ā
@GramophoneNerd (if Paige hacked his Twitter)Ā

wanting and not wanting at the same time
a comic for asexual awareness week
bringing this back today for the start of pride month. still overwhelmed by how well this comic went down and with how many people relate. itās easy to think aro-ace people are all totally accepting of their identities and really proud of who they are. i guess on websites like this you see a lot of people proudly putting their identity in their bio, a flag in their profile picture.
in fact i think a lot of aro-ace people really hate that part of themselves, hide it, and struggle for a long time to āacceptā who they are and feel any sense of āprideā. thatās the feeling i wanted to capture here. the disappointment, the loneliness, upon realising that you canāt feel what is such a wonderful thing. the embarrassment of not being ānormalā, of being some random sexuality that nobody irl has heard of, and letting down those around you because you canāt be who they want you to be. how desperately you want to change, how desperately you want to feel. but you just canāt.
i know not all aro-ace people feel like this. i know lots of aro and/or ace people feel able to be in relationships, to feel closeness and have partners in other ways. but i think itās important to be aware that some aro-ace people do feel like this.
the comments on this comic have mostly been great but a few have been very frustrating. a comment it got a lot was along the lines of āaw!! you donāt need to have sex to be in a relationship!ā. you completely missed the point, hah. this is not a comic about sex. itās about a lack of feeling, the lack of something beautiful other people seem to have. another comment that popped up a few times was āmaybe sheās a lesbianā. well maybe lesbians and aro/ace girls have more in common than people think - maybe they both often struggle to accept that they feel no attraction to men, even though society has conditioned them to do so, sometimes spending years trying to force themselves to like men in that way, when they just canāt.
this comic is called āwanting and not wanting at the same timeā because she wants to love. but when it comes down to the reality, she canāt fulfil the requirements of that. she wants to love someone forever, to get married and have children and grow old with her soulmate, but she doesnāt want it with this person. or that person. or anyone she meets or will ever meet. a sort of catch 22, i guess.
hope that makes sense. thanks for listening, and have a lovely pride month ā¤ļø
Have you ever thought about how most TBS readers are female? Are you concerned about the lack of male readers, or indifferent? Would you write differently to attract a male audience? And do you know why TBS has attracted such a female majority?
This questions taps into many veins of frustration I have with society at large. Itās a bigĀ issue, so Iām not going to be able to answer it very well in one ask, but Iāll try and summarise.Ā
I should begin by saying that I do have male readers and have been reviewed favourably by men, and I donāt have statistics on whether more men or women are buying my books. From the demographic at my events, however,Ā I think it would be fair to assume that more of my readers identify and/or present as female. And I think this is probably true of most authors. Studies have concluded that women read more than men and are more active in the literary world, e.g. book clubs and libraries.Ā
Personally, I donāt think the scarcity of men in the audience at my events has all that muchĀ to do with what Iām writing. Firstly, I think itās simply because women read more than men.Ā
Second, I think itās because I myself am a woman. Ā Ā
Joanne Harris often talks at events about men who have come up to her and happily proclaimed that they donāt read books by women.Ā That theyāveĀ cut themselves off from a wealth of literature just because the author presents as female. Iāve heard stories like this from many a female author. Some men Just Donāt Read Books by Women. And they are apparently proud to declare this to the world. Shannon Hale has also spoken out about the fact that schools have stopped boys from coming to her events and only sent their female pupils.Ā
The problem begins at an early stage. Frustrated booksellers try to get books about girls into the hands of boys, but find themselves stopped by the parents, who clearly live in terror that their kid is going to grow up gay (which they would hate) and/or bulliedĀ if he touches a Girl Book. Like femininity is some sort of contagious disease.Ā
Society tells men and boys that it isnāt cool to read books by and about women and girls. The same doesnāt apply to books about boys. Girls loved Harry Potter, but the world didnāt judge them for it. Because itās okay for girls to empathise with boys, but not the other way around. This is a symptom of the deep-rooted misogyny bubbling away beneath the polite face of society, and itĀ plays into why I have such a fervent dislike of the Strong Female Character archetype. Sheās praised because she displays traditionally masculine forms of strength.
I want men to feel comfortable reading my books. I want everyone to feel comfortable reading my books. But even if I did change what I wrote in the hope of attracting more men to my work āĀ which I wouldnātĀ āĀ I doubt itĀ would have any significant impact on the demographic of my audience. Women are happy to show up to my book events and buy my books because they donāt think itās uncool to read books by and about other women. Until society changes its attitude, many men ā especially young men who are afraid of judgement from their peers ā wonāt feel comfortable doing the same. Hence why female authors are still using androgynous pseudonyms to this day. And why men still feel comfortable declaring to women that they donāt read books by women.Ā
(Side note: It will be interesting to see if The Priory of the Orange Tree attracts more male readers than The Bone Season, as it has two male POV characters. My suspicion is that it wonāt, and thatĀ my audience at events will remain pretty much the same.)
Iām not going to change what I write to attract menĀ ā not only because I love my existing audience, and I donāt think thereās any reason to shy away from the fact thatĀ my work is enjoyed mostly by women, but becauseĀ Iām not going to tailor my creative output to pander to a toxic system. I donāt think this particular issue begins with creators. It begins the first time a little boy is told to put down that copy of The Princess Diaries, because that book isnāt for him.Ā

So the other night my friend and I were singing along to 'Dear Theodosia' at another friends house.
We were just singing that part 'If we lay a strong enough foundation..." when my friend's just like 'What the heck?! What do they need makeup for? People are DYING?!'

This picture is the cognitive triangle, and is the basic concept underlying cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). The idea is that your thoughts, feelings, and behavior make up your mind and your moods, and that they all influence each other. So your thoughts affect your feelings and behavior, your feelings affect your thoughts and behavior, and your behavior affects your feelings and thoughts.
CBT works under the idea that if you change one or more parts of the triangle in a positive way, then the rest of the triangle will also be positively influenced.
The tricky part is that feelings are really hard to change directly. We canāt really wake up and decide that weāre going to feel happy or sad. But what we can do is change our thoughts and our actions, and if we choose positive thoughts and behaviors, then our feelings will also improve.

From the previous ask I just had a wonderful image of Paige imitating Warden's Gloss perfectly, and feeling really proud of herself as a result, only to find Arcturus, Terebelle and co. staring dumb founded. "What is it trying to say?" one of them would say. Another would reply: "This is an English word I have not heard before."
Iāve always imagined something like this happening! Errai would definitely be sneering at her ā¦

Hey Samantha! I've always thought of villains as central to good story telling, so I was wondering, how do you go about creating your villains? How you design their character?
This is a great question. Youāre right: villains are key to many stories, and itās critical that theyāre strong and well-developed enough for you to sympathise with the protagonistās struggle against them while also believing in their character. Each of my books so far has had an obvious main antagonist: Nashira in The Bone Season,Ā the Rag and Bone Man in The Mime Order (and, um, that guy at the end of the book).Ā The Song Rising is no exception. I didnāt want them all to beĀ the same, so each time, Iāve thought of the different ways for their ideas come into conflict with Paigeās. Ā
(I am very proud of the new villain in The Song Rising. I canāt wait to see what you guys make of her.)Ā
To me, all villains must have a reason for their actions; they canāt just beĀ āevilā. The more morally grey they are, the more interesting I find them. What you need to remember is that every character is the protagonist of their own story, and on some level, they believe themselves to be the true hero, and our hero to be the true villain. Sure, you get the odd villain whoās evil just because they love being evil, and they can be frightening for that very reason, but they can also come off as a bit cartoonish. Itās much more chilling, in my eyes, if the reader can see how they justify their actions; if they can see how this person was once just like them, but slowly became something else.Ā
