The Cult of David Koresh

David Koresh, born Vernon Wayne Howell, believed that he was the final prophet of the Branch Davidians religious movement.

The Branch Davidians, founded by Ben Roden, worshiped at a compound known as Mount Carmel near Waco, TX. Upon Ben Roden’s death, his wife, Lois, became leader of the church as the group’s prophetess.

Lois’s son, George Roden, considered himself to be the rightful heir to Mount Carmel, but Koresh had other plans. It’s believed that Koresh, in his late 20s at the time, had a sexual relationship with Lois Roden, despite the fact that she was in her late 60s. Koresh claimed that God told him to have a child with Lois, an idea that upset George Roden.

After mounting tensions, Roden forced Koresh and his devoted followers off Mount Carmel at gunpoint.

Roden later challenged Koresh to a contest - whichever man could raise the dead would become the leader of the Branch Davidians. Roden even exhumed a body with which the contest would take place and Koresh went to alert authorities, leading to Roden’s later arrest and Koresh’s takeover of the Davidians.

Koresh led for 3 years, during which he encouraged marriage to underage girls and had sex with his 14-year-old wife and her 13-year-old sister.

On February 28, 1993, the ATF raided the compound after hearing that Koresh was abusing children and stockpiling weapons, leading to a 51-day siege on the compound.

During the siege, 21 children were released from Mount Carmel into FBI custody where it was revealed that the children had long been abused. Attorney General Janet Reno then approved the FBI’s request to mount an assault.

On April 19, the FBI attacked. They blew holes in the sides of the buildings and threw in tear gas. When Branch members fired upon the agents, the FBI responded with grenades and more tear gas.

A few hours later, fires broke out throughout the compound and an explosion occurred.

Only 9 of the Davidians escaped the fire, however 76 people, including 5 children, died within the walls as a result of smoke inhalation, burns, gunshots or stabbing.

On February 14, 2019, a 16-year-old student named Joshua Owen fired at least one shot into a group of three classmates at Cleveland High School in Rio Rancho, New Mexico.

No one was injured, and he immediately set the weapon down, then fled to the arroyo near his home, where he was apprehended.

He informed police there was a note in his pocket, which contained the list pictured above, as well as an apology letter he left at home. His teacher also received a text message from him that read, “I’m sorry Miss Sawyer but the voices won’t stop.”

The sad Adam Lanza that’s never talked about. I think these are really important to remembering who he was.

2008: “By 2008, when Adam turned sixteen and was going to school only for occasional events, Nancy’s e-mails describe his escalating misery. “He had a horrible night… . He cried in the bathroom for 45 minutes and missed his first class.” Two weeks later, she wrote, “I am hoping that he pulls together in time for school this afternoon, but it is doubtful. He has been sitting with his head to one side for over an hour doing nothing.” Later that year: “Adam had a rough night. He moved EVERYTHING out of his room last night. He only kept his bed and wardrobe cabinet.”

Spring Quarter 2008: The German class, in particular, is cited as a personal struggle in Adam’s life: “Schoolwork often triggered a sense of hopelessness. “He was exhausted and lethargic all day, and said he was unable to concentrate and his homework isn’t done,” [Nancy] wrote. “He is on the verge of tears over not having his journal entries ready to pass in. He said he tried to concentrate and couldn’t and has been wondering why he is ‘such a loser’ and if there is anything he can do about it.” He had been taking classes at Western Connecticut State University—for high-school credit—but he struggled there. “He wouldn’t speak on the way home and had his hood completely covering his face,” Nancy wrote one day. “He went straight to his room and won’t eat. I gave him time alone to compose and have tried to speak to him twice now, but he just keeps saying, ‘It does not matter’ and ‘leave me’ ‘I don’t want to speak of it.’ ” Two months later, Nancy recorded his despair when faced with some coursework in German: “He finally and tearfully said that he can’t complete the German. He can’t understand it. He has spent hours on the worksheets and can’t comprehend them.”

Late January/February 2010: Adam’s parents express concern to each other about his mental state as he approaches adulthood: “In early 2010, when Nancy told Peter that Adam had been crying hysterically on the bathroom floor, Peter responded with uncharacteristic vehemence: “Adam needs to communicate the source of his sorrow. We have less than three months to help him before he is 18. I am convinced that when he turns 18 he will either try to enlist or just leave the house to become homeless.”Nancy replied, “I just spent 2 hours sitting outside his door, talking to him about why he is so upset. He failed every single test during that class, yet he thought he knew the material.” Later that day, she wrote, “I have the feeling when he said he would rather be homeless than to take any more tests, he really meant it.” Nancy said that Adam had been pretending to go to classes and passing his time in the library.”

August/September 2012: Nancy tells Peter that Adam cannot see him, citing that Adam has had a “bad summer” and admitted he was a shut-in: “In early 2012, Nancy said that Adam had agreed to see Peter in the spring, but nothing came of it. Nine months later, Peter protested that Adam never even acknowledged his e-mails. Nancy wrote, “I will talk to him about that but I don’t want to harass him. He has had a bad summer and actually stopped going out.”

The Mysterious Death of Blair Adams (1996)

Blair Adams was found beaten to death and half-naked in a parking lot in Knoxville, Tennessee. Scattered around his body was German, Canadian, and U.S. currency totaling nearly $4k.

Lieutenant Jones recalled the gruesome scene:

“His pants were removed in a way not like someone would take their own pants off, but in a way that someone else would remove your pants from you. His socks were turned inside out. His shoes were off and his shirt was ripped open.”

Blair Adams was originally from British Columbia where he worked in construction. A few weeks before his death he started exhibiting strange behavior. He had severe mood swings and when confronted by his mother, he refused to tell her what was happening citing “her safety” as the reason. A few days before his death, he withdrew the $6k he had in savings along with thousands more in jewelry, and decided to cross into the U.S through the Canadian border. He then bought a one-way ticket to Washington DC. Upon his arrival, he went 500 miles south-west to Knoxville TN. He had no reason to be in the US, but his overall behavior was extremely unusual.

Upon his arrival in TN, a CCTV footage showed him renting a room in a hotel, half a mile from where his body was found. The hotel’s security camera showed that in the space of an hour, Blair went in and out of the lobby five times before finally paying for the room. After checking in, Blair pocketed the key to his room. But instead of going to his room, he marched out the front door and never came back.

Events

On May 28, 1975, at 8:45 am, 16-year-old Michael Slobodian, together with his friend Stephen Kipfer, walked to Brampton Centennial Secondary School, which was four blocks from his home. Michael was described by his friend as acting normal and neither did nor said anything out of the ordinary.

At 10:25 am, Slobodian failed to attend a physics class conducted by Ross Bronson, and during the morning his English teacher, Mrs. Margaret Wright, called his mother, reporting that he had been skipping classes.

At around 11:30 am Slobodian and his sister returned home, whereupon he was confronted by his mother about his teacher’s phone call. He promised to resolve the matter in the afternoon, and then went to his bedroom. In his room, Slobodian removed a .22-caliber semi-automatic rifle and a .444-caliber lever-action rifle along with a number of rounds of ammunition from his closet, which he then wrapped in a blanket and placed into a guitar case. He then changed into camouflage military fatigues, bid his mother farewell and slipped out unseen through the kitchen door with the guitar case in hand and made his way back to school.

Upon arriving at school, Slobodian made his way to a boy’s bathroom where he entered a cubicle and began unloading his weapons. At 11:35 am, students John Slinger and Michael Gibeault entered the bathroom when Slobodian stepped out of the cubicle and killed Slinger with a shot to the stomach. Slobodian then fired at Gibeault, when he fled out into the hallway, which hit him in the back and tore two holes in his diaphragm, bruised his liver, and injured his oesophagus. Gibeault collapsed to the floor but was dragged into the girl’s bathroom by a female student. After shooting Gibeault, Slobodian shot and seriously wounded Richard Shadrach, who had just entered the bathroom. Slobodian then went out into the hallway where he fired three shots from the .22-caliber rifle; two of the bullets hit Greg Keir and Jennifer Mather in the home economics room. He then began firing down the hallway, sometimes firing both rifles at once as well as kneeling down and firing. In the hallway he shot and wounded Jeff Rogers, Sylvia Meister and Karen Spragg. Slobodian then went down the main hall, where he fired a shot from his lever-action rifle through a door into the cafeteria that wounded Bev Bardeau, Brenda Weitendorf, and Susan Winklareth. Some of them apparently received cuts by glass fragments. Slobodian then fired another round that hit Jane Thornton before entering Room 104 where he fired a .444-caliber bullet into the chest of Mrs. Wright at point-blank range, killing her. The bullet passed through Mrs. Wright’s body and hit Dean Nadon, who was standing behind her, as well as Ernie Nicholls. He then left the classroom, dropped the .22 rifle to the floor, walked down the hallway where he dropped to his knees, put the barrel of the .444 rifle under his chin and fired.

In Slobodian’s room, several suicide notes were found, one of which read:

“To whom it may concern

My life is now gone to pot. I am going to eliminate certain people from this world. Those people are:

Mrs. Wright

Mr. Bronson

and any other sucker who gets in my way. I am then going to kill myself so as not to be imprisoned. I am not insane but just strictly fed up of life. I am not getting myself anywhere and its my fault.

I love my parents and my family and I know that they love me.

Michael Peter Slobodian.”

In another note he wrote “When I die, I hope to find a little peace upon my mind.”

Events

On a Friday afternoon in February of 1984 28-year-old Tyrone Mitchell went to his bedroom window and looked out at the 49th Street Elementary School across the street. He stood there wearing a khaki t-shirt, camouflage pants and black jungle boots and watched the playground as the school bell rang. Mitchell then sat down on a chair by the window, rested his elbow on the window sill and aimed an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle at the playground across the road. As the children began to stream out of the school into the playground at 2:23 pm, Mitchell took aim, and opened fire. Mitchell fired 39-rounds from the AR-15 before putting it down and swapping it for a Winchester pump-action shotgun and proceeding to fire multiple shotgun blasts from that instead. A number of children fell to the ground from their wounds in the schoolyard, while most escaped by running back into the school and those that did not hid behind trees, garbage cans, and any other available cover. Police and paramedics arrived on the scene only minutes after the first rifle shot and were able to remove some of the children but were unable to stop Mitchell from continuing to shoot. One of the first children to fall due to Mitchell’s gunfire was 10-year-old Shala Eubanks. A schoolyard supervisor, Albert Jones, made several attempts to reach her, but each time he approached, more shots were fired, forcing him to take cover. Eubanks was eventually carried into a classroom by two Los Angeles police officers where two paramedics tried to save her in vain. She died on the classroom floor. Carlos Lopez, who had been walking past the school on his way to a nearby park for his daily jogging stint, was also one of the first to be shot when the shooting erupted. He suffered gunshot wounds to the abdomen and died in hospital two months later.

After 12-minutes of gunfire, 39 rifle shots and 18 shotgun blasts from both of Mitchell’s shotguns, a standoff between the police and Mitchell began. During the siege, Mitchell’s fiancé, Marylou Hill, arrived and asked police to allow her to enter the house to try to talk with Mitchell. Authorities refused her pleas, fearing she would be taken hostage.

A few minutes before 6:00 pm, almost 4 hours after the gunfire had ceased, Police fired at least 16 canisters of tear gas into the house before a four-man SWAT team stormed the home. As they did so, a single shotgun blast echoed out of Mitchell’s bedroom. The SWAT team made their way up to Mitchell’s room and burst through the door. On the floor, they found the recently deceased corpse of Tyrone Mitchell, who had just fired a shotgun blast through the roof of his mouth from his double-barrel shotgun just two minutes before. 

Notable Facts/Past Events

In 1977, Mitchell’s family left Mitchell and went to Jonestown, in Guyana, as they were all followers of the Reverend Jim Jones and the People’s Temple. Mitchell’s parents, four sisters and brother, along with 911 people, never returned from Jonestown, leaving Mitchell alone. This, according to his fiancé, resulted in a nervous breakdown.

Mitchell returned to the South-Central Los Angeles neighbourhood where he was raised. He lived with his fiancée, Hill, in a two-story, white Victorian house at 730 East 50th Street, just 50 feet away from the school that now stood on the property where his childhood home had been. The house bore a crudely lettered sign “God’s Love” and commanded a sweeping view of the school playground. Mitchell developed a reputation in the neighbourhood for his irrational behaviour and as a user of narcotics such as PCP. His fiancée vehemently denied that he had “a problem” with the drug. On December 5, 1979, about a year after his return, Mitchell was arrested at his residence. He had been in a dispute with his uncle and landlord, Willie Lee Mitchell, about who would relight the pilot light on Tyrone’s water heater.

Reportedly, the uncle had threatened to arm himself during the dispute, and Tyrone, in turn, fired three shots from a .30-caliber rifle into the air before police arrived. Two months later he was convicted of a misdemeanour charge of discharging a firearm within city limits, fined $200 and placed on two years’ probation.

Hill said that Mitchell kept a “high-powered rifle” in the house and, by 1984, he occasionally fired it at the sky. According to adjacent neighbours, in February 1984 Mitchell regularly shot at airliners passing overhead, which were landing at Los Angeles International Airport, located about five miles to the west. These incidents were not reported to police out of fear.

In an incident on February 11th, one of Mitchell’s uncles reported to police that Mitchell had pointed a machine gun at him. No weapon was confiscated, no arrest made, and the matter was turned over to the city attorney.

Especially cruel to George were the brothers Michael and Clifford Abt, who loved to shoot at George with their BB guns, throw rocks at him and tease his immigrant mother for her broken English.

One day, March 23, 1976, Geschwendt simply had had enough. He armed himself with a .22-caliber pistol, broke a window and waited inside the empty Abt home for the family to arrive home for the day. He killed them one by one, throwing each still-warm corpse unceremoniously into the home’s basement, where he’d already dumped the body of their beloved St. Bernard pooch, Heidi..

He had killed five members of the family and one of the daughters’ boyfriends before getting antsy enough to abandon the house and the wait for the two brothers. Being late to return home had saved the lives of Michael and Clifford but, even after the arrest of Geschwendt for the horrific murders, the two brothers blamed each other and even had a much publicized, bloody fistfight at the crime scene.

Events

24 year-old Randy Stair arrived at Weis Markets in Eaton Township, Pennsylvania, on the evening of June the 7th, 2017, during closing time at approximately 11:00 p.m. for his late-night shift. Stair went to the back of the store to the crew area and blocked an emergency exit at the far back of the store with his car. He then continued with his duties, stocking shelves and cleaning. At 12:10 a.m., he uploaded links to multiple files and videos which detailed his plans to his Twitter account; these files were labelled “Journal”, “Suicide Tapes”, and “Digital set”.

Stair then went back to the crew area in the rear of the store where he blocked the remaining exits with wooden pallets and then locked the automatic doors at the main entrance of the store. He then entered the store armed with two shotguns. Stair was holding the Mossberg 500 Cruiser shotgun, with the second shotgun slung over his shoulder. He was wearing a black beanie, a pair of leather black gloves, a large olive-green ammo bag containing a large number of 12-gauge shotgun shells and a white and black sleeved t-shirt with the phrase “IT’S OUR TIME TO RISE” inscribed on the front. Stair then walked throughout the store, shooting dead three of the four working employees present in the building. He then approached the fourth and final co-worker, Kristan Newell (who had not heard the shots due to her listening to music with headphones on while she was labelling items and stocking shelves near the back of the store) stood behind her for 5 seconds but for an unknown reason did not shoot her. Newell then proceeded to the next aisle without noticing Stair.

Following this, Stair fired upon a number of items, glass and pieces of merchandise throughout the store. He then shot multiple small portable propane tanks, with the intention of causing a large explosion, however the canisters failed to explode. Around this time, Newell took off her headphones and upon hearing the gunshots, hid in the crew room and called 9-1-1. After a short time, Stair finished shooting items and then went to the deli section of the store, where he sat down on the floor, put the barrel of the shotgun in his mouth, and fired, killing himself instantly. Stair fired a total of 59 shots throughout the shooting. All shotgun rounds were fired from only one of the shotguns, the Mossberg 500 Cruiser, while the other acted as an unused backup. The Shooting began at 12:57 am and concluded with Stair’s death at 1:01 am.

Notable Facts/Past Events

Randy was obsessed with  the Columbine high school massacre and it’s perpetrators, especially Eric Harris

He had multiple Youtube channels and made hundreds of Youtube videos for years, prior to making EGS

He was a member of The Columbine High School Massacre Discussion forum

He named both his shotguns, calling one “Rachael” and the other “Mackenzie”

He created multiple twitter accounts for all his characters and role played as them and had conversations with himself.

In all his videos where he practised shooting combined, he missed the targets (which were typically only a few meters away) 156 times with a shotgun at close range. Randy was not very skilled with weaponry.

Randy made a video in which he flipped a coin 5 times. If out of those 5 it landed on heads the most, he would completely abandon the idea of committing the shooting and would simply kill himself in his own house. If out of those 5 it landed on tails the most, he would go ahead with the attack. Of course, in the video it lands on tails the most.

Motive

Without a doubt Randy Stair has the most bizarre and peculiar motive of any mass shooter I certainly have ever seen. If I were to give a synopsis of Randy Stair’s motive it would be this:

Randy Stair, a transsexual, youtuber and “brony”, murdered 3 people and killed himself at Weis Markets to become a fictional cartoon transgender ghost girl, to be united with his fictional cartoon ghost girlfriend and become a member of the EGS (Embers ghost squad) a fictional group of cartoon transgender ghost girls based off a character from the Nickelodeon cartoon series, Danny Phantom.

So yes, a tad bizzare.

Now, what caused this line of thinking? Well, from what I have seen and read about Randy Stair, it would appear that it was combination of a number of character traits, interests and 3 “traumatic” events which caused him to go down this line of thinking and eventually begin developing his plan.

According to Randy himself, 3 events which occurred in 2012 and 2013, were the instigators for this new psychotic line of thinking. Before we get to the 3 events, we must talk about what he was like before these events. Firstly, Randy was an unimportant and unnoticeable person throughout his life, his life held no significance and no one, not even his parent, paid much attention to him. This is what I think got him interested in Columbine, as a number of people who do feel like nobodies tend to gravitate towards the Columbine Killers. His interest in Columbine is what would eventually lead him to make the decision to carry out a mass shooting instead of just committing suicide. Secondly, what caused him to go down the road of planning the shooting? An interest in Columbine does not take someone who is perfectly content with their life and turn them into a mass murderer. But if all the other conditions are there, then certainly it will. Hopelessness is the key to creating a mass shooter, so what caused Randy to feel hopeless? There are the minor things such as him being a near friendless loner, someone who never had a romantic or intimate relationship with any one, working a part time job he hated which he felt trapped in, being depressed and suicidal for many years and being generally insignificant. The major things are as follows. He loved making Youtube videos and wanted to do Youtube as a career, however his videos and personality were so boring and uninteresting that he could never make it as a full time youtuber. This left him in a state of depression as his Youtube videos were the only things he really had going for him. So, the one thing he wanted to do with his life was an impossibility. Another major thing was his transsexuality, he had a great desire to be a woman however he felt that it was a physical impossibility and that he had been done a great injustice by him having the “mind of a woman” that had been placed in a man’s body. Both of these things left him feeling greatly frustrated with the world and now made him capable of violence.

His frankly pathetic obsession with a character from a children’s cartoon was another important part of the puzzle that was Randy’s mind. Ember McLain, a cartoon female ghost grabbed Randy’s attention the moment he saw her. His obsession with her and his transsexuality led him to want to be her (He even went as far as to attempt to put on white body paint to make his skin like hers).

All of the things I have listed above all play into the three events which occurred in 2012 and 2013. In February 2012, someone he new from High school was killed in a car accident, in January 2013 someone he knew of in college was killed in a car accident as well and finally in February 2013 Randy himself was injured in a car accident. For some reason or another, his mind broke and he now fell completely into psychotic delusion. His obsession with the character Ember led him to create a cartoon series of his own, called the “EGS”. Randy believed that these fictional characters he created were real people who had died or had killed themselves, who when they died joined a group of cartoon female ghosts, if they were men they turned into female ghosts (which plays on Randy’s transsexuality). He then fell in love with a fictional cartoon ghost girl he himself created. He now believed that if he killed himself he would become a cartoon ghost girl and would be united with his ghost love in death and become a member of the EGS. He then decided to carry out a shooting at the supermarket which he worked at. This idea came to him from his obsession with Columbine. By carrying out the shooting, he would not only recruit the people he killed into the EGS but he also believed that by carrying out this shooting and leaving behind his suicide tapes, this would somehow kick start a revolution, in which other EGS recruits would carry out shootings of their own to grow the fictional cartoon ghost girl army. I also personally believe from watching his suicide tape directed to his parents that another major motive was the hurt that the shooting would cause to his parents and the pain they would endure as a result, would act as a form of revenge against them for not knowing who he was. I think Mister Metokur phrases this excellently in his video on Randy.

“It almost seems like part of his motivation was to punish them, punish them for not knowing who he was and what he was into. For making him try to have a normal life, for making him try to go to school and get a job and move out and be successful. He was bitter and resentful for it. He was angry that they were pushing him that direction and he wanted to make them suffer.”

As for the “Coin flip of Fate”, i think that was bullshit. He was putting so much money into preparing for the shooting, he had spent years fantasising about it, his obsession with recruiting people into the EGS and the revolution that would follow his shooting was too deep for him to just throw it away on a coin toss. Plus, i am a very good liar and can tell when people are lying and when he started saying it wasn’t fake, that he did it authentically and people who would claim it was fake were being stupid , i immediately could tell he was lying through his teeth.

Personal Opinion

I hate Randy Stair more than any other shooter in history. While he was psychotic he was nowhere near insane, he knew exactly what he was doing. The people he killed did nothing to him, he held no grudge against them, this was not about revenge it, there was no justification in it, he did it for no sensible reason whatsoever. He was a cringy, retarded, walking fucking punchline. A pathetic, bizarre, weird, angsty, edgy transsexual brony who killed 3 innocent people who did nothing wrong to him so he could become a cartoon ghost with a ghost vagina so he could have a lesbian relationship with a cartoon ghost girl he himself created. That is what his legacy is, a joke, people will be laughing at him for years to come, which I think is a rather fitting end for a stupid angsty piece of shit like Randy Stair.

Events

On the 23rd of September 2008, 320 days after the Jokela High School Shooting; where 18-year-old Pekka Eric Auvinen shot dead 8 people, injured another and killed himself, Finland was about to witness a mass shooting deadlier than that suffered the year prior.

At approximately 10:38 am, 22-year-old Matti Saari, dressed in all black, entered the Kauhajoki School of Hospitality, located in Western Field, Finland, through the basement. There, he donned a black balaclava and loaded his Walther P22 Target semi-automatic .22lr caliber pistol. Saari exited the basement and walked through the building until he reached an exam room where roughly 20 students were taking an exam; all of said students were Saari’s classmates. At 10:40 am, Saari entered the room and proceeded to open fired upon the students. Saari approached each victim individually and proceeded to shoot them numerous times, with one victim being shot 20 times. In under 5 minutes, he killed 10 people: 8 female students, one male student and one male member of staff. After killing the 10, he lit a Molotov Cocktail and threw it into the exam room, setting the room ablaze and torching the bodies of the deceased. After setting the exam room on fire, he encountered two students from an adjacent classroom, who had come to investigate what all the noise was about. Saari shot at both of them but missed. At some point between 10:45 and 11:00, Saari took off running down one of the corridors, where he then lit and threw a Molotov Cocktail into a language laboratory and then proceeded to shoot out all of the windows in the school’s main corridor. Saari then encountered the school caretaker, Jukka Forsberg, whom he shot at but missed. Frosberg would later say that Saari was “very well prepared. He walked calmly.“

Around 11:00 am, a police van with two police officers arrived. They entered the yard of the college where they were shot at by Saari and forced to retreat. At this point Saari fled into the campus, where he hid for approximately 50 minutes. At 11:53 am, Saari phoned one of his friends and told him that he had just killed 10 people and that he was going to kill himself. Saari was described by his friend as being very calm and collected. His friend asked him to repeat what he had said multiple times, which he did, before ending the conversation with a simple “goodbye, mate.” Saari then hung up, took the Walther pistol, pressed it to the right side of his head and fired. At 12:30 am, police discovered Saari, still alive, laying on the floor bleeding profusely with a .22lr caliber bullet lodged in his brain. He was soon taken to hospital by paramedics where, at 4:56 pm, he was pronounced dead.

Saari had a YouTube channel called wumpscut86 (Intentionally similar to Pekka Eric Auvinen’s YouTube channel names naturalselector89 and sturmgeist89) where he posted videos of him firing his gun

Saari left behind two handwritten notes in his school dormitory stating that his motive for the shooting was: "I hate the human race.” He also wrote: “The solution is Walther 22”

Saari had been thrown out of the Finnish Army in 2006, after being a member for only a month, for opening fire in a woodland exercise, against orders.

Around 18 months prior to the shooting, Saari sent one of his friends a message indicating that he would carry out a school shooting the next day, however he later claimed that he was joking. It was around this time he began to take an interest in school shootings.

Motive

Given that around the time Saari became interested in school shootings and also claimed he would carry out a shooting at his own school would have been a week or so after the Virginia Tech Massacre, I think it would be safe to assume that Seung Hui Cho killing 32 people and himself would have been the ignition point for Saari to become interested in school shooters. From this point, he would look into other school shooters such as the Columbine Killers, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. The reason for his interest in school shooters can be drawn to his love of firearms, love of violence and he having been bullied in high school, like so many other school shooters. And then, on the 7th of November 2007, Pekka Eric Auvinen committed the worst peacetime massacre in Finnish history at that time. Saari became immediately obsessed with Auvinen and began adopting Pekka’s personality as his own. He wore the same clothes, he consumed the same content and espoused the same misanthropic beliefs, however Saari’s philosophy was a lot less sophisticated. Saari created his own YouTube channel whose name was intentionally referencing Auvinen’s YouTube names. He became so much of a copycat that he purchased his gun (a .22-caliber semi-automatic handgun, the same type of gun Auvinen used) at the exact same gun shop Auvinen purchased his and proceeded to post YouTube videos of him firing it, once again, just like Auvinen. And of course, just like Auvinen, he committed an act of mass murder at his school. The thing that separates Saari however from other copycat killers, such as Karl Pierson or Alvaro Castillo, is that he was actually able to carry out a successful attack, so much so that he actually surpassed Auvinen.

As of 2018, Saari’s rampage is the worst mass shooting committed by a lone gunman and the worst peace time attack in Finnish history.

Before the attack Anton Niclas Lundin Pettersson painted his whole face white except for black eyeliner and sprinkled glitter in his hair. Recently his hair had been shaved at the sides and into a mohawk style.

On the calendar hanging in the kitchen he drew a skull on the October 22nd entry.

He wanted to attack on October 22, the number 22 had always been a special lucky number. He expected to die via ‘suicide by cop’ and so wanted to choose his day.

Computer games like World of Warcraft, Skyrim and Might and Magic were Pettersson’s main enjoyment, along with war, action, fantasy and Vikings.

His taste in music changed dramatically over the years, first he liked hip-hop just like one of his half-brothers, but then he changed his mind and decided to hate that style and began listening to Korn. After that he changed his mind again and began to be interested in black metal bands such as Watain. Finally becoming interested in industrial metal bands such as Rammstein.

He wore an iron cross ring and a Thor hammer necklace.

In July of 2013, British born Geoffrey Portaway was arrested under child pornography charges. After his arrest, Portway confessed that he had been planning to rape, kill and eat children in a dungeon he had built in his basement.

When his home in Worcester, Massachusetts, was searched, police found a “sound-proofed dungeon, a child-size homemade coffin, a steel cage, a steel-topped table, butcher kits and restraints.” He had numerous knives, handcuffs, sex tools and castration tools along with two large freezers. On his computer, they found more than 4,500 instances and exchanged of child pornography. Police also found chat logs in which Portway detailed his gruesome plans. In these chats, the men discussed real children - by name and photo - who they had access to.

He was part of a group that shared child pornography as well as photographs of mutilated, injured and deceased children. Another member of the sadistic group was Ronald Brown, a puppeteer from Florida who worked at a local church. Brown had suggested they kidnap children from his church and on one occasion, sent a photograph of a young boy “with lines drawn on him to identify the different cuts of meat.” Brown was known for making appearances on the Christian Television Network kids show, Joy Junction, where his puppet would ironically warn children about the dangers lurking in the world.

In March of 1984, Gary Plauche’s 11-year-old son, Jody, went missing from their home in Baton Rouge. Police eventually tracked him down to a hotel room in California where he had been held after being abducted by his karate instructor, Jeffrey Doucet. Jody was rescued and Jeffrey was arrested on kidnapping accusations. He confessed to molesting Jody along with several other children.

Jeffrey was flown back from California to Baton Rouge. As they walked through the airport, unbeknownst to them, Gary was standing nearby at a pay phone. He was wearing a baseball cap and sunglasses. As Jeffrey walked past, handcuffed and assisted by a police officer, Gary spun around and fired a single gunshot into Jeffrey’s head. The entire ordeal was captured on WBRZ-TV. The killing sparked debate about vigilante justice across the nation with many applauding his actions. Gary pleaded no contest to a manslaughter charge and received a suspended sentence of seven years in prison, five years of probation and hundreds of hours of community service.
