Do u ever just feel bad like you hate everything abt urself you hate the sound of your own voice and you can feel how annoying you are with every text you send bc mood
some of y'all on this site want to be traumatized or mentally ill and never even think once about recovering. people like to open up their old wounds again and that shitâs toxic to kids who found out they were mentally ill. you make memes and aesthetics that glorify this lifestyle and kids who are just developing their minds see these things and think itâs cool to be this way and never seek help. itâs unhealthy and puts kids at risk. if you wanna romanticize something, romanticize recovering and self love.
iâm now seeing posts that are basically accusing therapists of being the same as ââââneurotypicalsââââ who tell you that doing yoga will cure your depression
and itâs fucking killing me because ???  the idea of being annoyed by people telling you that stuff is because those people honestly think that doing yoga and âlooking on the bright sideâ will magically cure your depression, because they canât imagine happiness not coming as easily to someone else as it does to them.  the idea isnât that getting exercise and practicing positive thinking are useless ways to treat depression.  but thatâs what iâm seeing a lot of now and i just want to sayâŚ. i got some fucking bad news, cause that is the treatment for depression.
therapists telling you to get good nutrition and exercise are not the same as your yoga-instructor aunt on facebook posting pictures of the sunrise and wondering how anyone can be depressed when the world is so wonderful!!! thats not just an anti-recovery attitude, itâs an anti-treatment attitude, and itâs unbelievably ignorant.
thereâs sort of this interesting circular form to dealing with mental illness, where you start in a place of âi just need to think positively and push myself out of this ditchâ and then you move to step 2, which is âdepression is a real and very serious illness and itâs not my fault that iâm tired all the time, stop telling me to just âthink positiveâ all the time.â
But then thereâs step three, which is where you size up your situation and say âlook, i understand how serious my illness is, and iâm no longer blaming myself for it.  And it sucks, and I donât âdeserveâ this, and I didnât bring it on myself.  But regardless of how unfair it is, the truth is that Iâm the only one who can actually do anything about it.â  And so in a lot of ways, you end up with parallel ways of thinking as before, but this time youâre coming from a completely different source of understanding.  People who donât know anything about mental illness say âdepression is a choice.â  People who are fed up with being depressed and realize that wallowing in the comforting embrace of self-pity is useful to erase guilt, but ultimately wonât help them lead a better life say, ârecovery is a choice.â
The first group means that if youâre depressed, you can just magically decide not to be depressed. Â The second group means that depression is a crushing weight on your back determined to make your life as miserable (and as short) as possible, and that you didnât do anything to cause it, but that ultimately you have the choice of giving up and accepting being depressed for the rest of your life, or you have the option of making an effort to improve your quality of life. Â Similar statements, totally different meanings.
But I think a lot of people are sort of seduced by the comfort of giving up, and with the good intention of creating communities of understanding and non-judgement between mentally ill people, social media has unwittingly created communities of mentally ill people encouraging each other to give up. Â To just accept that this is the way their lives are, and thereâs no possibility of getting better. Â And thatâs how itâs gotten to the point of people dismissing actual mental health professionals as being no different than some ignorant person who doesnât know the first thing about psychology and thinks an avocado smoothie will solve all your problems.
Avocado smoothie people are coming from the first perspective, that being depressed is a free choice that you can easily opt out of.  Therapists are coming from the second perspective, where mental illness is a horrible reality, but given that youâre seeing them, a provider of mental health treatment, of fucking course theyâre going to give you advice on how to treat your mental illness!  Your therapist isnât going to sit around and say âyeah man that sucks, haha look at this funny meme about how much you want to kill yourself.â  Your therapist is going to give you recommendations of activities and habits that will help you recover.  And they understand that these activities are not easy!!!  They get that!!!  The reason theyâre there is to help you introduce these activities and ways of thinking into your life!!!  Otherwise theyâd just hand you a pamphlet and walk out!!!
But you canât access that kind of help - the kind where you say âgetting out of the house is a real problem for me, I never have the energy to get out of bedâ and your therapist says âokay letâs figure out how to break this down into small steps, weâll set a small goal for this week, and next time we meet you can tell me if it worked out, and if it did then we can figure out what the next goal will be, and if not then we can figure out why it didnât work and try a different approachâ - if you immediately dismiss any mention of recovery as âneurotypical bullshit.â
Anyways please please please take your healthcare seriously, get treatment, and realize that giving up and normalizing your depression/anxiety/etc as something that will never ever get better (yes, even if itâs a chronic condition that youâll never fully cure, you still need to treat it) is not okay. Â Try to get good nutrition. Try to get sunshine and exercise. Â Try to be social. Â Making an effort to do things that will help you is not the same as thinking mental illness is a switch you can easily flip. Â Getting treatment is not the same thing as pretending your mental illness doesnât exist or isnât serious. Â On the contrary, getting treatment is taking your mental illness seriously. Â Iâm not saying you should never make a joke or reblog a fucking meme or anything, Iâm saying donât use social media as your mental health care provider. Â Social media can be a way to vent, but venting is not the same thing as recovering.
Honestly it can take a very long time to get to that âstep 3âł perspective but itâs a vital step.
THIS.
Iâve got my boyfriend calling me at 8am every weekday morning to get me out of bed so that I *get out of bed*. I then tell him when Iâve gotten to the gym.
We have worked this out between us, consensually, because I canât fucking make myself do it. Because depression. But when I get up and go to the gym, suddenly my days get way, way more functional. I eat real food, I run errands, I cook- instead of laying on the couch feeling like my diaphragm got nailed to the floor. (They donât all necessarily happen every day, but they become at least theoretically feasible.) This isnât part 1, itâs part 3. Because dammit, I am fucking sick of this shit. I donât deserve it and itâs a real issue- and for me, having someone to basically hotwire me because my starter is broken is how weâre gonna get a routine that takes minimal spoons to run.
Sometimes depression is cureable. Sometimes itâs just treatable. But dissing treatment because âgah neurotypicalsâ is shooting yourself in the foot.
Sometimes self-care is baths and Netflix and junk food and Tumblr. And sometimes self-care is an arranged phone call at 8am.
this is so fucking important, i hate the culture on this site that dissmisses all treatment as âadvocado auntsâ telling you to stop lying in bed all day and just be happy. recovery is a choice, a hard one, but a choice nontheless.
Also some therapists are themselves mentally ill and are speaking from very personal experience. This happens a lot more than anyone seems aware of. There are many reasons people get into the field, but sometimes thatâs one of them.Â
Its cool that tumblr makes us all feel less alone, but I was severely depressed for three years and honestly spending less time on tumblr and more time actually following all the annoying âneurotypicalâ advice, like reaching out to family and friends, creating a routine, focusing on improving my diet and habits and exersizing daily (and yes, doing yoga) is what has helped be get out of it.Â
It takes a herculean effort especially to start. But i swear to god, its worth it. Please dont let this site be something that contributes to your suffering when you could have so much more.
hey look itâs me :))

really wish people could finally stop vaguing in places they think i cant see it, it just. hurts by this point
âpeople with mental illnesses are never abusiveâ
âpeople with mental illnesses are always abusiveâ
âpeople with mental illnesses are not inherently abusive, but can be abusive just like everyone elseâ
what bpd feels like
- one minute you have the worst anxiety ever, next minute you canât remember what it feels like to not be happy - constantly craving to go places with friends but feeling like no one would actually want to go with you - having 15 different music playlists for every mood - always on edge - not quite knowing if you are imagining a symptom or if other symptoms are making you wonder if you are imagining it - enough trust issues to last a lifetime (and then some) - being unprepared for the future bc you didnât think youâd live this long - dissociating bc of the weirdest things that have no reason to cause you to dissociate - watching a movie/ reading a book and then suddenly having a new personality - mood swings for no reason - feeling the most intense sense of isolation even in a room with many people - /that/ person - knowing that you should get professional help but refusing to get a therapist bc you wouldnât be able to trust them
i mega hate this
The thing about bpd is that the good feels absolutely great and the bad feels⌠absolutely crushing.

Hi! Just a genuine question, I was curious as to why you dislike the Rainbow Fish?
Because Rainbow Fish can be retold like this:Â
A fish has a part of their body - their physical, incarnate body, what they were born with - that makes them very happy and that they are very proud of. They also have an unfortunate habit of thinking that they are better than other fish. That part isnât good, and causes the other fish to be unhappy with them and avoid them.Â
The fish is now very sad. The only person who likes the fish anymore tells him to go to the octopus, the animal framed as the adult in the story.Â
The octopus tells the rainbow fish that they have been a snotty jerk and that the only way to make people like them again is to take off their scales and give them away. That in order to have any friends and make up for their behaviour, they have to rip off pieces of their own body and self and give them away to other people to make the other people happy and make up for their transgressions.Â
And the rainbow fish is upset. And then another fish comes and asks them for a scale. And the rainbow fish takes off a piece of themself, their body, the thing they were born into, and gives it away. And now that fish likes him, and is materially benefitted by this piece of another fishâs actual body that has been given to it.Â
And then the other fish come, and the rainbow fish rips off more parts of its body - all of the parts that used to make it happy and that it was proud of - and gives them to the other fish, because itâs not fair that the rainbow fishâs body was so much nicer. And when the rainbow fish has ripped all but one scale off, tearing out of themself all but one of the things that they possessed in their self that made them happy, then all the fish are friends with them! And everything is great! And everyone has a fair share.Â
Of the rainbow fishâs, and I do quite mean to keep hammering this point, own body.
What the book says is:Â
1. if you are born with something nice - like, for instance, an attractive body or a clever mind or a talent or whatever - and it makes you happy and proud, you are a horrible person and deserve to be shunned. Absolutely no line is ever drawn between Rainbow Fishâs self, their actual own body, and their behaviour. In reality, itâs their behaviour thatâs the problem: they are mean and aloof to the other fish. This could be the case whether or not their body was all covered with magnificent scales. However, the book absolutely conflates the two: their behaviour is framed as a natural and unavoidable outcome of being happy about and proud of their special, beautiful body. So donât you dare ever be happy or proud of anything you have or can do that everyone else doesnât have exactly the same amount as, because if you do, you are horrible and by definition snotty, stuck up and mean.Â
2. That in order to make up for the transgression of having something about your actual self that makes you happy and proud (which, remember, has automatically made you selfish and snobby, because thatâs what happens), you must rip pieces of what makes you happy out of yourself and give them to other people for the asking, and you must never ever EVER have more of that part of - again, I hate to belabour except I donât - your self than other people have, and that makes you a good person that people like and who deserves friends.Â
To summarize, then: to be a good person you must never have something about yourself that makes you happy and proud and if you happen to be born with that something you must absolutely find a way to give it away to other people and remove it from yourself, right up to tearing off pieces of your body, in order to be a good person who deserves friends.Â
This, I am absolutely sure, is not what the author intended: the author definitely meant it to be a story about sharing versus not sharing. But the author then used, as their allegory/metaphor, the fishâs own actual body. Their self. It was not about sharing shiny rocks that the rainbow fish had gathered up for himself. It wasnât even about the fish teaching other fish how to do something, or where to find something.Â
The metaphor/allegory used is the fishâs literal. body. And so the message is: other people have rights to you. Other people have the right to demand you, yourself, your body, pieces of you, in a way that makes absolutely sure that you have no more of anything about your body and self that is considered âgoodâ than they do.Â
And that might just suck a little bit except, hah, so: Gifted adult, here. Identified as a Gifted child.Â
This is what Gifted children are told, constantly. All the fucking time.Â
(Okay, I overstate. I am sure - at least I fucking HOPE - that particularly by this time there are Gifted children coming to adulthood who did not run into this pathology over and over and over and over again. I havenât met any of them, though, and I have met a lot of Gifted adults who were identified as Gifted as children.)Â
Instead of being told whatâs actually a problem with our behaviour (that weâre being mean, or controlling, or putting other people down), or - heavens forfend - the other children being told that us being better at something doesnât actually mean moral superiority and is totally okay and not something we should be attacked for, we are told: theyâre jealous of you. Thatâs the problem.Â
Instead of being taught any way to be happy about our accomplishments and talents that does not also stop the talents and accomplishments of other children - whatever those are! - from being celebrated, we are left with two choices: to be pleased with what we can do, or what we are, or to never, ever make anyone feel bad by being able to do things they canât. And the first option also comes with two options: either you really ARE superior to them because you have skills, abilities and talents they donât (or are prettier), or you are a HORRIBLE stuck up monster for feeling that way.Â
(It is not uncommon for Gifted kids to chose either side, which means itâs not uncommon for them to choose âokay fine I really AM better than youâ; this can often be summarized as âintent on sticking their noses in the air because everyone else is intent on rubbing them in the dirtâ; on the other hand I have met a lot of Gifted women, particularly*, who cannot actually contemplate the idea of being Gifted because to do so is to immediately imply that they are somehow of more moral or human worth than someone else and this means they are HORRIBLE HORRIBLE SELFISH PEOPLE, and so will find literally any reason at all that their accomplishments are not accomplishments or that they donât deserve anything for them.)Â
Instead of being given any kind of autonomy or ownership of ourselves, we are loaded down by other peopleâs expectations: we are told that because we can accomplish more we must, and that daring not to do what other people want to the extent that they want with what we are capable of we are selfish, slackers, lazy, whatever. We are taught that we owe other people - our parents, our friends, even The World - excellence, the very best we can possibly do, and trust me when I say people are ALWAYS insisting We Could Do Better. And we should, or else we will be disappointing them, or letting them down, because (because we are Gifted) the only reason we could possibly be failing is not trying hard enough.Â
We are, in fact, told over and over and over and over again, to rip off pieces of ourselves to give to other people to make them happy, because those pieces are valuable, but forbidden from enjoying the value of those pieces - pieces of our selves - for our own sake because that would be selfish and arrogant. And we owe this, because we were born a particular way.Â
Because, metaphorically, we were born with rainbow scales, so now we have to rip off those rainbow scales in the name of Sharing, and otherwise we are selfish and horrible and deserve to be alone.**Â
That is why I fucking hate The Rainbow Fish.Â
Because whatever the author INTENDED, the metaphor they chose, the allegory they picked, means that THAT is the story they actually told. (And is the story that child after child after child after child I have encountered actually takes from it.) I donât hate the author; Iâm not even mad at them. But I do hate the book with a fiery passion, and it is among the books I will literally rip apart rather than allow in my house when I have kids, because Iâm not going to give it to anyone ELSEâs kid either.Â
*but, I would like to note, not UNIQUELY: this is something I encounter in Gifted men as well.Â
**I canât remember who it was, in relation to this, put forward the thought: if people actually talked about the access and use of childrenâs bodies the way we talk about access to and use of Gifted childrenâs minds and talentsâ , the abusiveness would be absolutely clear? But theyâre right.Â
â because sometimes it is Gifted childrenâs bodies in an abstract way, in that its their talent for gymnastics or their talent for ballet or sport or whatever, so I mean in a very raw way, the actual physical embodied flesh we are.Â
