AKA - adventures in badge engineering: Bonus edition Mazda Roadpacer AP, 1975. Wanting a full-size saloon to compete with the Nissan President and Toyota Century, Mazda struck upon the idea of importing Holden Premiers from Australia. GMH supplied the cars minus their engines, Mazda then fitted them with the 13B rotary motor. Though the 13B offered more power than the standard Premier’s 3.3 litre OHV in-line 6 it was lacking in torque and in the heavy Holden body the Wankel engine and slow and thirsty, with consumption as heavy as 9mpg. The Roadpacer sold badly, mostly to government agencies, and in 2 years only 800 found homes. Many were later crushed so the Roadpacer is now a collector’s item and has the distinction of being the only General Motors product ever produced with a rotary engine.
