Passenger trains in US vs Europe (image is making the rounds among U.S. transit advocates today)
High speed rail in China on 2008 VS 2020
It’s because North America has the best freight rail system in the world and you can’t really be the best at both.
Here’s our freight rail network. A lot more tracks, yeah? It’s actually the largest in the world and moves about our 40% of our goods. And it’s incredibly profitable. Passenger transport isn’t profitable and like it or not the US economy is largely driven by public (taxes) investment in private (publicly traded, shareholder) profit over social services like transportation.
Given America’s size, lack of density, and the efficiency of air at moving people over packages, it’s no wonder our rail networks are built to move goods, and not passengers.
I’m not saying we don’t need high speed rail, because we definitely do, but it will have to look different in the US. We’ll likely see it built up as corridors - connecting cities along our more densely populated coasts with few-to-none transcontinental routes.
Additionally trans-continental is hard in the US compared to Europe - we’ve got two big north/south mountain ranges in the way that cut the west off from the east and the west coast off from the rest of the western part of the country.
Here’s an NPR blurb about it: https://www.npr.org/2025/12/12/nx-s1-5641119/why-the-u-s-struggles-with-passenger-service-despite-having-the-most-rail-lines?renderPlatform=nprone_ios&unified=true
And a council on foreign relations report published in 2023 that goes into more detail: https://www.cfr.org/backgrounders/how-us-rail-system-works
A spate of train derailments, most notably in East Palestine, Ohio, has reinvigorated the debate over the nation’s railroad infrastructure.
The U.S. has the most railroad tracks of any country, but we're not known for our passenger trains. A look at America's rail system and the
admittedly i know little of the subject but one would think, at 45 years of age, he would be a ryan goose by now
This Clancy story reminds me of the Andrea Yates story.
I remember that story was a shift for me in how I thought about abuse, personal responsibility, moral and ethical behavior, and how so many women are just completely and totally failed by everyone around them.
I couldn’t believe, at first, how adamant my mom was that Randy Yates was responsible for the deaths for those kids when it was clearly Andrea who did it. But as the details comes out my paradigm shifted.
I don’t know if the abuse is quite as stark with the Clancy situation, but it’s clear Lindsey was failed by multiple people and systems that should have helped her.
But Patrick Clancy? Yeah. He’s responsible too. Even if he didn’t actually commit the act, those kids are dead as much because of him as they are her. Just like the Yates.
I hope he rots.

violence and death and dying and blood and guts and gore and violence and viscera and fuck you fuck you fuck you fuck you fuck you fuck you
The courage to slay a god.
“Haha remember when murder-hornets were gonna be a thing? What a nothingburger.”
Yes, because the Washington state government activated like a sleeper-cell and ruthlessly, systematically hunted them down and annihilated them.
“Y2K came to nothing amirite?”
Yes because an army of software engineers working around the clock, losing sleep, and busting ass till the last minute prevented it from happening.
“Remember the hole in the ozone layer?”
You mean the one that was fixed through rigorous world wide government action?
One of the root problems of our society is a refusal or inability by media to articulate that all those “it’s gonna be an apocalypse” disasters were not disasters because we collectively did something about them.
The good news is this is actually quite correctable. I maintain my firm belief that we as humans are capable of solving almost all of our problems, when we decide to do so.
And I still think that’s going to happen. I don’t know when or how, but I do know that abandoning hope won’t help bring it about.
And I refuse to let the cynics own a chunk of my heart.
Today I was looking up something on my state’s DEQ website. I found what I was looking for, but I also found this tidbit of information:
In the 1980s only 30% of my state’s residents lived in clean air areas that met national standards for air pollution. Now all areas of the state meet those standards.
The air quality my children are growing up in is better than the air quality I grew up in. I’m putting a tick in the W column for this one.
I made these sushi sandwiches for lunch the other day. Seaweed, rice, cukes, cream cheese, another seaweed, more rice, smoked salmon, rice seasoning. Not pictured but I topped it with another seaweed and ate it down.
I’m going to level with you. I have listened to The Devil Went Down to Georgia for most of my life. We were a country music household, this was a staple of my childhood along with Johnny Cash, Garth Brooks, and that one Chipmunks country album.
I have no idea what “Fire on the mountain run boys run/The Devil's in the house of the rising sun/Chicken in the bread pan picking out dough/Granny does your dog bite no child no” means and at this point I’m too scared to ask.
For once I can be of assistance.
Each of the lyrics comes from an old-time hickory song for fiddles, and is a lyric from that corresponding song.
"Fire on the Mountain" --> "Fire on the Mountain, run boys run"
Fire On The Mountain - Fiddle Player POV
"The House of the Rising Sun" --> "The Devil's in the house of the rising sun"
House of the Rising Sun
"Ida Red" --> "Chicken in the bread pan peckin' out dough"
Ida Red - Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys
"Granny Will Your Dog Bite" --> "Granny does your dog bite? 'No child, no'."
FTC #149 Granny Will Your Dog Bite
And for your furthered education, The Mountain Whipporwill.
Mountain Whippoorwill (aka How Hillbilly Jim Won the Great Fiddler's Prize)
this is the key part of the song, that a lot of people miss. people have this misconception that the contest between Johnny and The Devil is about who is the better fiddle player. but it isn't. its about who is the better fiddler.
in a time before things like radios and record players, every time you heard music was because there was somebody in the room with you playing an instrument. and many, many, many social events involved dancing, which requires music. so, if you're planning any kind of gathering in the american south or appalachia, you need to find a fiddler. and the fiddler's job is to play music that everybody knows and likes and can dance to.
the mistake The Devil makes in his bet with Johnny is that he misinterprets the contest as being about technical ability, so he has this big flashy song. he plays fast and impressively with a band of demons playing unfamiliar instruments in unfamiliar rhythms. he's definitely more skilled at playing than Johnny, and thinks he has it in the bag.
but Johnny wins because the contest is about being the best fiddler. the song uses these lines mentioned above as a shorthand for saying that Johnny is playing these songs. Johnny launches into a set of the most popular songs, played well, and that's what gives him his big win. A good fiddler knows all the hits, and can read the room to know what to play next. The Devil loses because he completely fails to read the room, and doesn't know the right songs.
I was just talking with a friend who hates cooking which is so wild to me bc I love cooking so much it is hard for me to understand people that don't like it, but i know many exist. my parents don't like cooking either, but my grandmothers both do, so i feel like it jumped a generation for us. and then i also wonder how much of it is learned and how much not. so! poll time
do you like cooking and were you taught to cook by your family?
i like cooking & i was taught
i feel neutral & i was taught
i don't like it & i was taught
i like it & i was not taught
i feel neutral & i was not taught
i dislike it & i was not taught

Is it just me or is the last 30 minutes of The Odyssey basically the last few minutes of the Wishbone episode?
I know it’s the same story, but like the whole visual beat by beat storytelling is the same.
Isn’t it.
Out of spoons and just can’t?
Keep a few of these on the shelf, they’re under $3 each and have a 1.5 year shelf life.
Then, you need some mozzarella. I recommend string cheese, because of how it’s packaged it has a very long shelf life (as long as that shelf is in the fridge). String cheese is very much emergency cheese in my house. But if you have it in any other form, that’s fine. You’re gonna put it on top. Then eaten together everything will taste like pizza.
If you have pepperoni or any other pizza toppings, that’s great. These will be your toppings. Ham and pineapple is totally fine. Whatever you need today because this is supposed to be cheaper and easier than even ordering takeout.
If you want to be fancy, put the beans in an oven safe ramekin/dish and put it in the oven/toaster oven/air fryer. The cheese gets a little toasty that way. If you don’t care, put it in the microwave. Put the toppings on them before you put them in whatever you want to heat them in. Heat it until the cheese is melted.
Pizza beans. Tastes like pizza, feels less self-flagellating because its beans, is nearly effortless. They’re nutritionally complete like this so good job on eating something.
They are not a lot of calories for a full meal though. They’re better than no calories so eat them if that’s all you can manage, but if possible, eat more than just these. Your brain needs calories to function.
Did your mother ever tell you to go outside and play?
