As casually as noting the weather outside, she states, "You've changed since I arrived in Fodlan."

It's not said unkindly, but Sara also doesn't show any signs of explaining herself anytime soon. She looks him up and down, confirming some invisible truth that makes sense only to her. Finally, Sara's gaze catches on the gleam of gold fabric draped across one shoulder.

"Do you still see me as family even though we are no longer members of the same house?" She doesn't mind either way, she thinks. Life demands that people go their separate ways sometimes and Sara has no regrets about the decision.

Before he can answer though, her expression takes on a certain playfulness, lips tugged into an unapologetic smile conveying there is no ill-will. In truth, Sara has grown rather comfortable here over the years. Inured to people and places and unforgettable experiences in her time at the academy. It may be as close to family as she will ever know, so she hopes he finds what he is looking for too.

"Nice to see you too, stranger," Claude replies, smiling playfully. As for her question... thankfully, it's one that's easy to answer.

"Family goes their own way, eventually." It's in his nature and in his blood to venture into the unknown to seek what he desires. Even so, it's never easy to break old, familiar routines and take on something new. Perhaps in the past Claude would have taken the departure more personally, as a result of a personal failing. It was difficult to accept his lack of control. "And let's be honest, I'd be a shitty house leader for holding you back!" he laughs. "You were always an incredible mage, but after joining the Eagles you really became a force of nature. You may not be among the Golden Deer anymore, but I'm definitely still proud of you."

A pause. "I do miss you in the Battle of the Eagle and Lion, though. It was amazing to see you plow through the competition, but not so fun when you're on the receiving end..."

She only noticed it recently. She has seen many scars in her life. From wounds healed without magic, wounds where magic was not enough, some where the bearers wanted their scars as a badge of honor.

She has a few scars of her own. As does Claude. And though there is a sort of game to be played in pulling truth from his exaggerations when she asks about the others, there are only so many things a thin, faded scar across the neck could be from. Mitama says nothing as her thumb runs over the line, eyes following the path.

Traditionally, Almyran princes were executed with a silk cord. Death by strangulation was considered bloodless, and the rope's materials ensured that the body would not sustain unnecessary injury. Unfortunately, as Claude realized one fateful night, being considered Fódlan meant he wasn't afforded such a privilege.

He isn't in the habit of showing scars, least of all this one. It just raises questions that he isn't in the position to answer. But Mitama is... safe, he thinks. Her fingers are softer than wire and move with kind intention, to trace rather than to strangle.

Claude lets out a fluttery sigh. He'd sooner tell Mitama the story than tell her he's ticklish there. After tolerating a few moments with her hand on his neck, Claude's hand reaches up and threads his fingers with hers. "Hey." He smiles as he gently pulls her hand away. "...Sorry to say, but even if you squeeze my throat it wouldn't be enough to shut me up."

Hilda kicked back in her chair, feet carelessly planted on the table, twirling a lock of pink hair. Her own notebook lay abandoned a short distance from the soles of her heeled boots, the half-finished notes from her previous class long forgotten. This conversation, at the very least, had the potential to be interesting.

The school newspaper -- if you could give it such a honourable title, anyway -- had caught her eye immediately. Hilda loved gossip. It wasn't that her own life lacked excitement; in fact, she had often been the subject of gossip herself. But, really, she preferred to think of it as bonding through storytelling --- and wasn't that what community spirit was all about?

"Unbelievable rumours, you say?" she mused. "You've come to the right girl. I can work with unbelievable. What have you got?"

Claude stares at the blank notebook in his hands. He didn't bother writing that stuff down—now, clearly, he should have. "Let's see..."

As he thinks of the stories he collected today, he writes them down this time. "One is that the Archbishop is retiring. But instead of having the cardinals decide on her successor, they're going to poll the students and have it decided by popular vote." Which is ridiculous on multiple levels... though actually, now that he thinks about it, how old is Rhea anyways? It's not exactly something he can ask casually, without consequences that is.

"Another, ah... that the former King of Faerghus, the late Lambert, has a secret twin that lives as a monk in the Church." An interesting story, but unlikely. Claude hasn't seen any records of Lambert having a twin, and he can't see a reason to hide the existence of one from birth. "He was born with the same name, too. A second Lambert, basically, but only here is he able to live a life truly his own. Sounds like a story more than anything..."

There was a third one, he thinks. "And, uh... a student..." Hm. How to describe this. "A student rubbing himself against one of the couches in the common room. That's the most believable one, but I'd rather not be the one to confirm it, you know?"

A sigh. "Garbage, basically. You've gotta have something better... c'mon Hil, don't make me write about couches."

Somehow, it is both incredibly surprising to hear that you, of all people, struggled to reach a conclusion on a completely rhetorical question, but also unsurprising that you devoted that much time to thinking on it at all. How flattering it is to get a glimpse at just how often you spend thinking of things that relate back to me.

I wish them luck, wholeheartedly; the competition for my attention already has a favorite to win, who has promised me the fanciest of cages. I believe we might make a poet out of you yet. I have been unable to find anything quite like those poems you shared with me. If you might be able to recommend a collection that I can search for, I would be grateful. To Mitama,

As always, you are an ever-flowing source of inspiration to me. That lip color was a refreshing change of pace from my usual "medicines". I'm pleased to see it work as intended, better even.

If that bit of makeup represents my lips, then what would you make of lotion that represents my hands?

[ Deciphering Mitama's message, unfurling its meaning, was entertaining indeed. Claude's reply is also crossed out, though not as severely. He wondered how far Mitama was willing to go with it. ]

I'll likely still be at the Officers Academy. It's not my preference to stay in one place for a long time, but I still have some unfinished business here that I need to attend to. I have to continue pursuing education here in order to justify my continued presence. Luckily the Church gives opportunities to pursue more rigorous academic tracks than the standard officers training. From what I've researched, I might even get access to restricted materials in the library...

Could you imagine someone like me as a sanctioned bishop? I never imagined that a few Faith classes years ago would result in me being qualified to pursue this sort of thing. If my aunt saw me in bishop's garb reciting prayers from heart she might look out the window to see if pigs were flying.

This time, I copied some of my favorite poems from outside of Fódlan to share with you. The kind of poems I'm into are hard enough to find in Fódlan, so I've little hope you'll be able to encounter them in Hoshido. But for what it's worth, I'm a big fan of Almyran poets such as Shireen and Rajendra. If you happen to see poems of them translated, especially GOOD translations, they are must-buys. Shireen is a master of wordplay and metaphor, her work is very romantic. Rajendra bends and breaks the rules in order to become a masterful storyteller. His are best spoken aloud.

…perhaps I had underestimated just how much you were taking all that poetry you read to heart. If you had spoken this sweetly to me sooner, you might have saved us both some time.

(That is a joke. We are both stubborn. It would have been the same, I imagine.)

Silly though it may sound to you, I have said it all the same. If I am to be deprived of the delight and warmth that is your presence at my side, even if that misfortune be the result of my own decisions, then at least allow me this small condolence to my heart. But as you wish, it will be the last I say of it.

Though the position is a gift I asked for, it does not come without its loathsome strings. Wartime service means nothing, it seems, for it was back to training and lessons only days after we arrived. There is peace, at least, in the fact that we prefer non-offensive faith based magic. Even our ninjas are reluctant to intentionally injure themselves just for my practice. The lessons are enjoyable, but would be more so were I not having to spend a third of them chasing after Shiro to ensure he attends.

If your asking is selfish, I wonder then what happens if I say that I, selfishly, would find joy in hearing you ask? Do two deeds, both selfish in nature, cancel each other out to become something honorable? Perhaps I am cruel in wondering, but the heart is so seldom swayed by reason.

Warmth felt and words heard / what make you then of this deed? / lips pressed to parchment.

A question for the philosophers! I turned this question around my head for ages, trying to think of a satisfactory answer for you. I haven’t, perhaps to your surprise. One answer wouldn’t do justice to the endless amount of variables that could occur. But, if you want my opinion on this particular scenario…

I thought I was being selfish when I wanted to see you again so soon. But clearly I’d be more selfish to ignore your pleas to see me. Perhaps you’d like me to rescue you from your days of endless training and chasing after your prince? Then again, you’d end up taking lessons at the academy and chasing after an even worse prince, so you would be trading one gilded cage for another.

A blade honed once can’t be sharp forever, unfortunately. Maybe I shouldn’t give you advice though—I’m not the one who’s been through an actual war. My battles, I fight with words. Though I wish I could dole out poetry at the drop of a hat like you do. Might make arguments at the Roundtable more entertaining.

There’s no way in hell / you thought I’d agree to that. / You think I’m stupid? Ten bushels of wheat / For your vote in this matter. / What say you, good sir?

Somehow I don’t think it’ll get the same rave reviews that yours do.

In regards to your kiss, I’ve sent some lip color along with this letter. My handiwork, of course, so really hoping it survives the trip to Hoshido. It should be a very bright red. Next time please wear it before you kiss the letter so that I know where to place my lips. [Here, Claude draws a little winky face ;)].

The hand in her hair drags out a whine that had been building for a while now, but that she had stubbornly held down. It was no fun when she made the game too easy for him. Her laugh fans across the skin of his neck as she pulls back just enough so that her voice can properly reach him.

"Not so patient, are we, King?" It had only been a few months. Did he really miss her that much? It would be sweet, if she was not aware that it was not the case. They had rules for that very reason. "My sincerest apologies." Her lips return to his neck, trailing their way downwards until they come to a point where she can feel his pulse beating against them.

She lets him feel the wicked grin on her face for just a moment before she parts her lips and bites. She expects he'll punish her for it later. She looks forward to it.

Claude lets out a breathless laugh, the first genuine one in a while. "Am I supposed to be? I'd say you've kept me waiting long enough."

Transforming the Alliance into the Federation is far more complicated than a simple name change. New laws needed to be passed and old ones re-examined, never mind the more immediate issues his country faces—their warmongering neighbors, for one. Overall negotiations are going as well as they should be, but they've hit a frustrating wall regarding just how much "financial assistance" the Federation should be offering. A war with the Empire would prove more costly, but there's also the matter of restoring ruined farmland and supporting Leicester's merchants; even now, far from that meeting room, Claude finds his mind wandering to possible steps forward in—

"Waugh!" Claude yelps in surprise as teeth sink into his skin. Was, was that— "Oh, look who's impatient now!" he teases. Definitely didn't expect that coming from Mitama! Though, ow, that'll definitely leave a mark...

"Message received loud and clear." Claude pulls Mitama in and claims her lips. They've wasted enough words.

"Haaaappy birthday!" Hilda sang, bounding up to him with her hands behind her back. "Prepare to be blown away. Ta-da!"

With a flourish, she revealed the item that she'd been concealing: a long, thin, golden box.

Nestled inside, he would find six arrows tied with a golden ribbon. "I made them myself, so they probably no good for battle, buuuut…" She pointed to the fletching. "I gathered the feathers one of our missions. Apparently they're from some rare bird, or something? The locals seemed pretty impressed with them, anyway. Maybe they'll bring you luck!"

"Oh, you made these?" Claude had a feeling Hilda would be the kind of person to give gifts, but something handmade is a surprise. Even more so when he sees that it's not one of the hair accessories she likes to fiddle around with, but actual arrows.

(At least, they look like actual arrows. They're not as heavy as he likes, and there's something off about the balance, so definitely no good for battle. But it's the thought that counts.)

"A rare bird, huh?" Claude focuses on that instead. He pulls one arrow from the bunch and inspects the fletching closely. No amount of staring will help him identify the bird this belonged to, but he can at least admire the feathers' rich mottled colors. "I bet Marianne would take one look at these and know exactly what they're from. Though, hah, I doubt she'd want to see her bird friends' feathers all glued and chopped up like this...

"Kidding! All things considered, you did a good job making them." Claude starts up his usual trick, spinning the arrow with his fingers. "Thanks! Want to see me put them to the test?"

Mitama does not often rise with the sun. It takes particularly exceptional circumstances to motivate such a result, or so many naps that she somehow manages to derail her sleep schedule back to normal. This day was one of the rarer cases of the former.

She makes sure to stay quiet as she reopens the door to Claude’s room. She knows Claude likes to meditate in the morning before starting his day, and she does not want to interrupt him. When instead of an interruption, she ends up catching his eyes as she peeks into his room, she smiles. “Good morning.”

The door is still closed behind her just as quietly to not draw attention. The gifts she comes back with are not subtly hidden at all, so she does not bother with making any attempt at hiding them either.

“I expect that our very important boss man of a leader might find his attention sought after on the day of his birth.” She holds out the first and much simpler gift, a still warm cup of coffee that she had made her way down to the dining hall to fetch for him. “I do not expect that I might have all your time, but I thought a moment before the vultures swarm might be a good start?”

When he takes the cup, she sits on the edge of his bed. That leaves her second gift, which she is far more proud of. “I made you this.” A book, handwritten and charmed to last. The book is a copy of one she owns, the only difference being that this one contains both Hoshidan poetry, and a translation of each poem for him to be able to read himself. “There are also explanations and details of interpretations in the second half of the book, so that you might read them and come up with your own at first without consulting.”

On the inside cover, a green leaf is pressed between pages. Neatly underneath it, what should be a familiar hand has scrawled; Leaf from the battle / still standing , still surviving / until back to you.

Mitama wishes she had the free hands to bring a cup of her own to fiddle with. “Happy birthday, Claude.”

Stirring in the bed rouses Claude from his sleep—he’s a light sleeper, he can’t help it. Through bleary eyes he can tell the sun is just beginning to rise… so Mitama getting up right now is definitely weird. Claude keeps his eyes closed and breathing slow until he hears the door close (softly, of course). “Huh,” he yawns. Mitama, not just awake but up, at an “ungodly” hour of the morning? Unheard of. Unprecedented! And not even a word of goodbye to the poor birthday boy…

Not a moment too soon, the door opens once again; Mitama with her hands full. "Oh, mornin'." The warm scent of freshly-brewed coffee already perks him up.

"Why, because of my birthday?" Well, Mitama’s instincts are right; birthdays are a good excuse to try cozying up with someone, as politicking nobles usually do. Here, though, the day’s usually quiet, with only a few people stopping him here and there with well wishes. "Take all the moments you want. Today's just another day."

Claude gladly takes the cup, eager to free Mitama's hands and see what she brought for him. Sure, some people only acknowledge his birthday just to be polite... but a part of him is still giddy to see someone go out of their way to celebrate him of all people.

Claude plays it cool, of course, tempering his excitement as Mitama presents him with his present. A book! He's careful not to spill his coffee over it as he sets it aside. "Made it?" Claude echoes. He flips through the pages. Eyes widen, "That, that's your handwriting—wait, so, you're serious? You actually made it?"

For once, Claude is speechless as he continues to turn through the paces, marveling meticulously-copied haiku penned by Mitama's own hand. Eventually he comes to a leaf pressed between pages like a bookmark. After reading the poem besides it, he's at a loss for words.

"..." Maybe it's the result of growing up as a prince among nobility, but Claude has never received anything like this before. A gift handmade by the person who bought to, rather than bought or commissioned through someone else. Honestly, his heart is beginning to stir. Like he's getting... emotional? It's not like him, and yet...

Claude turns to Mitama. Then, he pulls her into a tight hug and presses a kiss against her temple. "I love it." Because you made it just for me. Knowing how adverse she usually is to extraneous effort, to see that she went out of her way to make this for him... "I don't think anything else I get today is gonna top this," he teases.

Its only weakness lies in its lack of mineral resources but no more! Recent sightings unearth a mine never before excavated. Quickly, the duchy moves to investigate it for if there might be anything of worth to fully cement it as unbeatable compared to all the other Alliance territories. However, it proves to be in a dangerous spot, leaving all curious onlookers to be unable to even get close as the company in charge of searching it blocks off all parties not hired for the mission. Perhaps the promise of something new and exciting tantalizes you to try and sneak past them anyhow, or could it be that you are concerned for the miners’ sakes? Dimitri could not claim that he was familiar, as such, with many of the lands in the Alliance. He had been to some, here and there, diplomatic envoys that mostly consisted of views of the countryside through the windows of a carriage, and the occasional mission task for the Academy - more of those lately - but had never, to his recollection, stopped to spend so much time with his boots on the soil of Leicester herself.

The task was a strange on, in his view - plunging beneath the earth, verifying its riches, and confirming whether it was appropriate at all for humans to enter.

Or, indeed, whether there were points of ingress, and perhaps more importantly, egress.

"Are you familiar with this area?" He supposed if anyone would have known, it might have been Claude - of all people, he would expect the duke's heir to know the lay of the land, if not at least to be familiar with her temperament. "Do you have an idea of what we might find in a place such as this?"

“'Familiar'’s a good word for it.” In that Claude knows of this place on paper, but has little to offer in personal experience. That said, it doesn't take a genius to notice that this area is rather unproductive. It shows by how the carriage has to travel off the cobblestone main road and into muddy dirt paths, a bumpy and unpleasant ride. If only they could have taken a wyvern. "The area here is prone to landslides. The clay's terrible to build on, too—as you can clearly see, there's not much in the way of roads here."

That'll change if this deposit of ore is as good as they say it is. Which is a very big if. But if the news is credible enough that grandfather of all people is willing to send Claude there to get a firsthand look at it, then there must be something good.

"What we should find are cobalt deposits," Claude adds. "It makes a rich blue pigment that dyes everything from fabric to glass."

I can only apologize for what time passes between my writing and you receiving this letter. Had I the power to move the heavens and earth to make the journey shorter, know that I would.

The journey back was uneventful, thankfully. Hoshido is as beautiful as it has ever been, and despite my father’s lack of effort, I have been granted a place to stay as Shiro’s retainer. So that is one concern that worries me no longer, at least.

I cannot deny that returning to Hoshido has not lifted the stress off my shoulders. The watchful eye of the church was perhaps as imposing as the looming figure of the monastery itself. Though I may come to miss some of the friendlier faces that I became accustomed to there, there is quite the sizable relief at the idea that I can sleep in without anyone coming to fetch me for inane assignments at any moment.

…I am sorry for my abrupt departure. And that I left without a proper answer to your question. I do not want you to think that I am running away or not thinking of it. But I suppose this is exactly the type of challenge we pondered over, yes?

The fleeting moment / shining under moonlit sky / settled in my heart.

Why are you sorry? Because you’re somewhere I can’t be? I bet by the time you receive my reply you’ll have already realized how silly you sound to me. You may hide it, but I always had a feeling you wanted something more for yourself. And if what you’re looking for is in Hoshido, who am I to stop you?

Through your letter that’s passed from your hands and into mine, I can hear your words and feel your touch, and it’s as though we’re together once more. When I said you were special to me, I meant it. You really are.

I guess it’d be selfish of me to ask to see you again so soon after you’ve left. We both have our obligations. But it really is great to hear from you again.

Regarding the question, I wouldn’t worry about it. If you happen to have an answer to it, though, then regardless of what it is I’d like to know.

A school newspaper… once again, Claude kicks himself. Argh, he totally should have thought of that first! It would have been a great way to engage the other students with ideas from Fódlan and the rest of the world, current events in other countries, different philosophies…

Well, maybe it's for the best. After all, he already has enough on his plate as House Leader and occasionally acting Duke Riegan, not to mention everything else on his mind... running a newspaper requires more thought and dedication than he has left to spare. Another student can deal with the admin stuff... Claude can sneak in his own ideas later. For now, he focuses on getting the goodwill of the editors. That begins with his first assignment.

"Hilda, I got nothing." Claude sighs, waving around his blank notebook. "Every time I try to get some gossip out of someone, they start talking about the most unbelievable rumors... and I mean unbelievable."

No one is at their best when they’re terrified. A mind consumed by fear won’t easily think past what they see, can’t properly assess what’s before them to determine if it’s truly a threat. People who can confront what scares them and approach with curiosity will be crucial if Claude is ever to foster openness and diversity within and beyond Fódlan…

So he’s happy to accompany a classmate onto her journey to face her fears. Anything to encourage stepping out of the ol’ comfort zone! When the guru turns his attention to Claude, asks about what fears he has, the house leader can only laugh and shrug his shoulders. “Beats me. I get called Fearless for a reason.”

Of course Claude has fears. What man doesn’t? But his are deeper fears, more complex. They aren’t things that the guru can pull out of a hat like he can with spiders and snakes. Claude smirks, perhaps a touch overconfident, but who cares? “Sorry, gramps. Not something I freely share.”

A smile comes through the guru’s wrinkled face. “Ah, I see. Well, fear not, young man. You are in good company… for now, of course.”

The guru doesn’t break his smile, and yet, suddenly Claude sees it as more sinister…

“The spirits whisper your secrets to me as soon as you step into my domain. I know now what lies in your heart, Claude von Riegan. The fear of having a truth revealed is one of the most common amongst men with status, because they fear losing their place of belonging. My advice is that you speak of it on your own terms, before another does it for you.”

…Claude’s eyes widen. Uh… Does that guy know? Like, know know? It’s not like he can ask either. The house leader is left in shock, and the guru turns his attention to Ophelia with the same benevolent smile. “And you, lass? What do you fear?”

as the new (old) muse, claude will be my focus in getting threads this time around! i feel very rusty with his voice so im excited to get back into the swing of things for him. i recently reblogged my plotter from last time so feel free to look over there if you're interested in threading with him! otherwise, some mission board thoughts:

[requires unaffiliated] tide pools: i think this would be a cute one for claude to experience—he doesn't have much experience with the beach so i could see him getting interested in the microbiomes and trying to identify the creatures within. if your muse is the type to try to touch a poisonous sea creature he would also be helpful to have around :crunchy:

face your fears [faith+]: claude hates being vulnerable so of course this would be a great activity to put him through. i like the idea of the guru saying that they know claude's greatest fear without him even saying it, leading to claude being on edge the whole time afraid that he'll have his secrets exposed somehow (guru does not actually do anything and it's all in claude's head). he could come as a show of support for someone and not take the whole thing too seriously for himself until then. i'm imagining haunted house vibes in the thread.

Claude had trouble making true friends back home (was always looked down on and in a bad position, so being friends with him was painting a target on your back). Here in Fódlan, with different baggage on him, he’s glad that it’s easier to find people willing to be around him. As long as secrets and prejudices aren’t in the picture, Claude enjoys connecting with people. He maintains an easy, carefree air about him, making himself out to be both more approachable to others (despite his high status) and in control of what’s going on around him. A smile from him is a reassurance–everything is fine, he won’t bite. Claude fucks up and pushes boundaries from time to time, but he is quick to pick up on when he upsets the other person and apologize for his actions.

Claude is still reluctant to share certain parts about himself and his past, fearing even more rejection. While he is starting to place more faith and trust in other people (as opposed to only relying on himself, as he had been raise), he worries about jeopardizing these feelings of safety and belonging.
