Our Author Tells All: - Can you tell your readers something about why you chose this particular topic to write about?- I saw and article about a woman who went into labor on her flight, and a NICU team was actually traveling on the plane too. They delivered the baby and stabilized mom and the newborn until the flight could land. Both mom and baby are doing well. I thought this would be an interesting way for two medical professionals to meet and then hit it off. - How many times have you been rejected before your first novel was accepted or before this book was accepted?-  I was rejected on four manuscripts before I debuted with Harlequin, but I will let you on a little talked about fact. Rejection comes in all stages of this journey. I have written ten books so far for Harlequin, but I have had multiple rejections since my debut. That is just a part of this journey. I recommend leaning into the sting for a day and then pushing past it! - What is your favourite genre?-  Romance – hands down. I need the happily ever after. I want to know that the characters end up happy. The world is so dark and there is enough suffering. If I am escaping into another world, I want all the feels but I want to be happy and satisfied when I close the book. - What have you done with the things you wrote when in school?- Burned them! Not really. Though if I found them I probably would. I think of all writing as a journey, I’ve written ten published books now and I am still learning and growing. But I wouldn’t want anyone to see those early works, they were angsty, over-the-top and very teeny. All appropriate for the time, but not what forty year old me wants anyone to read. - Do you have any pets?- Two puppies, that aren’t really puppies anymore. - Abby, my golden retriever and Bucky, the pittie mix - I call them my co-authors, but realistically they have never edited a page. (LAZY) But they do try to crawl under my desk, which is not big enough for my feet and their bodies! - Crawling into my lap. Neither are lap dogs, but they will “tell” you that lap dog is - How many of the accidents – funny or otherwise, or bad experiences in your stories are based on your own experiences? Or those of your friends?- Ummm, probably to many. Although at least when they aren’t mine, I do check and make sure my friends and family members are okay with the inclusion. Haven’t been turned down yet. - What did the Pandemic inspire you to write? Have you included a pandemic or COVID in any of your latest books? If so, why?-  I write medical romance and I debuted in March of 2020, right into the start of the pandemic. I have intentionally left this out of my writing. We live in a world with covid-19 virus, but I don’t want to read about. Maybe in a few years, but to be honest, I think my stories will continue to live in a world where that wasn’t a factor. - How   does global politics affect what you write? Do you try and include some real political personages or actions or… in your work?- So, like most writers, I have a day job. One where I have to deal with global issues every day. It’s draining. As a result, I do my best to keep my worlds free of global politics, pandemics, wars, and human suffering in general. Even writing medical romance, I make an effort to have my patients recover. That isn’t real life and I understand that. However, my writing is my escape, and I hope that it can be an escape for others too. A contemporary romance with steamy, open door romance and tear-jerking moments about facing the past and finding forgiveness, All This Time is the first book in the Brandywood Small Town Romance Series. CW: alcoholism, abuse, cancer, language. Our Author Tells Us: - How long do you think about a topic before deciding to write about it? It really depends on the book I’m writing. In the case of my historical fiction books, I have to do some research beforehand. With my contemporary romances, though, I really started writing them for myself in a lot of ways so they have all been done with the “discovery writing” method (making it up as I go along). - Do you have a set of notes or a note book where you write down topics that appeal before making a decision as to which topic this time? Not really. I do take the time to flesh out a general plot outline in my trusty yellow legal pads, though, and if something does occur to me for a future book, I usually scribble it down. The problem with my method is that I can rarely find my notes! - What resources do you use? In general and for the last book that you wrote? For my historical fiction books, I do a lot of reading of nonfiction books about the topic, primary source material (newspapers and journals/diaries are my favorites), I watch movies and documentaries, and I read documents related to the events. For my romances, my research has been much more limited, mostly related to careers or the feasibility of certain events. For example, in All This Time, I had to do some research on flying helicopters during a snowstorm. - Would you recommend self-publishing and building an audience before approaching a publisher? If so, what benefits do you see that it might have for the aspiring novelist? I chose to go the self-publishing, or indie, route after careful consideration despite receiving a few offers from small presses and a great deal of interest from agents. I had spent years revising and writing my debut novel and had paid several editors along the way and came to the conclusion that I not only wanted to be in control of the story’s future but also of derivative works. I also loved the idea of being able to just get on with starting an author career and build a reader base. While I may someday approach traditional publishing again, right now I’m loving the freedom indie publishing affords me and feel better equipped to handle things like marketing now. - What is your favourite genre? My favorite genres are the two I write: historical fiction and romance. J I do read quite widely though. - Have you ever tried to imitate another author’s style? And if so, why? When I was in grad school for writing, one of my professors assigned several short stories projects that were to be pastiches of other authors. I loved the assignment. It really pushed me to my limits and helped me to find things in other authors’ writing that I could use to refine my own. - Do you have any pets? I do! - If so, what are they? I have two boxer dogs.- And what are they called? Bennett and Scout - Do they help you write? Not really, haha! But they do like to sit at my feet a lot while I write. - What is the funniest thing they have done while you are writing? They love to clear the room while I’m sitting writing at night, lol, which isn’t always the best. (Boxers can be a bit gassy at times.) - What, in your life, are you most proud of doing? I’m a really proud homeschooling mom, actually. It’s not easy to homeschool and write with five young children, but I absolutely love it. - Do you write at home or away from home? At other times, I thought the writing needed to be more robust. But I am not the world's greatest fan of short stories. I usually prefer more 'meat' as I read very quickly and get through a short story in literally minutes so it needs to have something extra to claim my attention. But I can recommend reading this set if you are looking for a little something to assist with bereavement now of potential - much like a death cafe - it is good to think about this time of life's ending, as we will all experience it. Ferociously independent biology professor, Callahan Banks, is thirty-two years old, six months pregnant, and happily single living in the wilds of her childhood home on Timicau Island, South Carolina. But there are complications. The baby’s father, a wealthy forty-two-year-old bachelor, Pepper Dade, owns the island and is determined to marry her and raise their child together. Book Review This book was a joy to read as the author clearly knows, or had researched, the various forms of wild-life you might find on one of Charleston’s Sea Islands – the Coastal barrier islands from the deltas of the 2 rivers that exit nearby. We learnt about biology and alligators and how long it takes them to eat and how often;  and not-lizards (anoles) and that they hibernate, and there is even a sub species that is native to the area called Anolis-carolensis, which is green, lives in trees and is an iguana lizard (yes I can research too); and the bald eagles; and mullets – yes there is a theory that the less oxygen in the water the more the mullet jump. That said, it is not an area I would like to live, too muggy, boggy, and too many mosquitoes (I’m allergic to their bites) and other insects – fire ants for instance! But I guess if you were already living in Charleston, none of that will faze you and you might think it idyllic to live in a wild park. Certainly, you might think a safe place to bring up 3 very lively, intelligent boys – triplets no less! The worst of all boys to deal with I should imagine as there can always be 1 or 2 to contradict the other/s. So, a very different setting for this murder mystery. And add to that the triplets with their boundless energy, imagination and inquisitiveness and a very pregnant biology professor they befriend, and the scene is set for mayhem and general chaos as the island acquires new residents, not all with a stainless background it seems. I liked this story with its characters and the description of our heroine and her personal voice in the narration. Her explanation of her emotions and beliefs and upbringing being somewhat different from the accepted norm, and thus colouring her outlook to life and her pregnancy and potential marriage.
