If I had a nickel for every time Ryan Gosling played as a stressed out spaceman in a visually stunning movie with a hell of a banger OST, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice 🧑🚀🌑
A/N: More reveals, a hint at something new, and a clue about Host's past!
----
“Mare!” Mad’s voice called from the bathroom mirror before the demon climbed out of the locket around Mare’s neck to crawl into his lap. “You look terrified. What’s Jackie said to you?”
“He wanted to know more about Host,” Jackie explained, perching on Phantom’s bed as Mad curled closer to Mare. “He found out about the sigil.”
“Is it true?” Mare’s voice was barely a whisper as he looked at Mad. “With his sigil gone, Host can’t perform the Bonding?” Arms wrapping around Mad, he shuddered before pressing his face into the demon’s neck.
“That’s not something Jackie should have told you,” Mad mumbled, eyes flashing dark red as he glanced at Jackie before softening back to blue when he turned to Mare. “But yes, without a sigil to carve, Host cannot have a complete Bond. There isn’t anything to link him to a possible mate, which means his Bond would forever be incomplete, leaving the mate to Bond with someone else.”
“That’s awful,” Mare whimpered, holding Mad closer.
“What’s awful?” Phantom asked, stepping into the room with Marvin and Chase following behind him. “Mare, are you alright?”
“Babe, c’mere,” Jackie started softly, pulling Phantom into his arms and pressing his nose into his hair. “Mare just learned something about our sigils. I want to assure you both that it can never happen to us, we are already Bound, and we are safe.”
“An incomplete Bond can only happen when there is no sigil to make the Bond with,” Mad explained, eyes flashing dark red before he continued. “Even if somebody were to take our sigils – and that is very unlikely – the two of you having them on your bodies will retain the sigil and the Bond.”
“Is this about Host?” Phantom asked suddenly, eyes going wide. “Can he—”
“Marion and Phantom, please meet in the dining room for instructions,” Night’s voice interrupted, crackling through a battered old comm system in the room. “Madrick and Jackie are to remain in your rooms until further advised.”
Phantom and Mare looked at each other before glancing back at their partners, clearing their throats uncomfortably. “This could be bad,” Phantom murmured, giving Jackie a chaste kiss before heading for the door and waiting for Mare to join him.
----
“I would like you both to be apart from your partners for a while,” Night stated once Mare and Phantom had sat down, avoiding eye contact as he methodically cleaned his glasses. “As a safety precaution until your research is complete.”
“We can’t do our research without our partners to assist us,” Mare began, peering suspiciously at Night. “We need their blood, training information, comparisons… how will we complete our research if Mad and Jackie can’t be near us?”
“Why are you separating us?” Phantom asked, arms crossed as he leaned back in his chair. “It’s not for “safety”, Night.”
“It’s about our blood analysis results,” Mare stated, tapping the table as he connected the dots. “We asked you questions about the results, you gave us answers, and you’re worried we aren’t satisfied with the answers.”
“You don’t want us asking Mad or Jackie these questions,” Phantom continued, eyes bright. “You think they may have the answers you’re afraid to give us. What are you hiding, Night?”
----
“You have an affection for the leader of the hunters,” Mad stated, stepping out of the window’s reflection to stand behind Host. “You’re feeling for Night what you felt for your last partner, and you’re afraid to get hurt again.”
“You are sensing my emotions again, sire,” Host sighed, finishing changing his bandages before turning to face Mad. “This… feeling is different than what I felt before. It’s almost deeper, some force pulling me in a way I cannot resist.”
“And yet you’re afraid.”
“I doubt anyone can hurt me more than he already did,” Host gave a bitter chuckle as he motioned to his bandages. “I think my fear lies in whether my affections will be returned. I could survive an incomplete Bond; I don’t think I’d survive an unrequited one.”
Eyes fading to dark blue, Mad stepped forward to place his hand on Host’s arm, offering him a smile. “I understand,” he whispered, reaching up to adjust the bandage. “I think the fact he doesn’t question you as often as he used to is a sign that he doesn’t mistrust you anymore, though.”
“He asked me to help him keep you from talking to Marion for some time,” Host confessed, face twisting up in guilt. “He will apparently ask questions soon that Night doesn’t want you answering.”
“Though I don’t appreciate his asking you to keep me from my Bond,” Mad began, eyes flashing dark red for a moment, “It does mean something that he asked for your assistance, Host. Don’t let your past stop you from finding happiness.”
“There’s a surge somewhere near this place,” Mad whispered, eyes flickering from dark purple to grey. “We need to find it so we can find out how to contain it.”
----
Murdock and Yancy jumped as the door to the terrace slammed shut, turning to see Mare and Phantom storming into the garden with frowns on their faces.
“What’s eatin’ them?” Yancy asked, pressing closer to Murdock’s side protectively.
“Night told them the truth,” Murdock sighed, removing his gloves and taking Yancy’s hands. “Not the whole truth, apparently, but the truth nonetheless.”
“The whole truth?”
“Not for me to say, but he did tell them he lied about their blood results.” Leaning back in the terrace chair, he let Yancy climb into his lap, huffing as the demon dropped his entire weight against him. “I should talk to them.”
“While you’re at it, ask them about the Bonding,” Yancy suggested, pressing his lips to the skin above Murdock’s turtleneck sweater. “I’m curious about how they managed to complete it without dying.”
--
“Not now, Murdock.” Mare shot a glare at Murdock coming down the path to the garden as he stood beside Phantom. “We can’t handle more lies, please.”
“And if lying is the only way to keep you safe?”
“Let us have that choice,” Phantom replied, leaning against his brother. “We’re old enough now to decide whether we should worry about our bloodlines. We’d like the choice to find our birth parents.”
“He only worries about the aftermath of what you find.”
“If we find anything that concerns your safety,” Mare began slowly, adjusting his glasses. “We would take it to you for your help. It’s what we’ve always done, isn’t it?”
“I wonder if I would have raised you both better,” Murdock sighed, wrapping his arms around himself. “We both had no clue what we were doing. Just know that I care about your wellbeing, alright?”
“We know,” Phantom answered, straightening up and smoothing down his shirt. “You looked like you had something else you wanted to talk to us about when you came down the path, though. What is it?”
“Yance wanted to know how you survived the Bonding.”
“I’m still figuring that one out,” Mare confessed, glancing down at his hands. “My working theory is that we spent enough time around Jackie and Mad that we built a tolerance to anything in their blood. Probably something to do with their saliva.”
“Or our own blood,” Phantom added, fidgeting with his shirt as he bit his lip. “There’s a lot of copper in our blood, which might explain for Mare, but I did the Bonding while the Academy was collapsing around us.”
“Could be adrenaline,” Mare suggested, tilting his head. “Enough adrenaline released combined with the time spent with our demons builds a tolerance to the carving and blood sharing of the Bonding.”
“Do you think Yance could complete the Bonding without killing me?” Murdock asked, cheeks dusting red.
“I’d need to do some more research,” Mare began, stepping closer to his twin in his excitement. “And I need to know how long you were together. Would you let me compare yours and Yancy’s blood to ours so I can give you a detailed hypothesis?”
“S-Sure,” Murdock stammered, smiling when the twins smiled at him and following them back into the mansion.

Being that the 40 Eridani system is beyond our comprehension and the planets may not actually be real, I get to take some liberties in the colouring of this piece!
So as well as the organ, I like to think Grace has another system model for the Eridani system (a trinary star system) like in his old classroom and some textured posters of Tau Ceti, Earth and Erid for his class.
I used some metallic pencils for this as well as just basic coloured pencils.
i love the project hail mary fandom because everyone is on board with the delusion. ryland has a twin thats just ryan gosling from another movie? sure. markiplier is here too? why not. plot twist, they're actually triplets and there's a third brother who works for the cia who, again, is just ryan gosling from another movie? absolutely spectacular.

I tried to make his little shirt that’s mentioned in the book, but it didn’t work out so I stuck with just bandolier instead. I found the hardware while sorting my button drawers and I used some brown ribbon to make the bandolier.
I also had to sew the legs because when I made the shirt I kinda messed them up.
I have been working on making a mini Rocky in crochet to go with a potential mini Grace that will live on my shelf this week.
Tester pieces went great, so I started in the final yarn tonight. It's a good one-night project, mostly straight pieces.
But the best part is looking at this little drawing I put onto my pattern page every time I check the steps:
And remembering my pattern instructions end with, "Your mini Eridian is complete! Amaze!" also makes me giggle.
Most likely Rocky will be posted tomorrow. Grace may take a bit longer as I still have yet to figure out if I'm going by the book (has only mentioned changing his clothes specifically once, and it was to wear the jumpsuit packed for him) or off the posters and promotional images I've seen for the movie (jumpsuit pants and a t-shirt)
My favourite Adrian headcanon is that they're a biologist/zoologist who has seen so much shit, they're completely unphased by any and every alien habit of Grace's.
I mean full-on khaki-shorts-wearing, traversing-wilderness-with-nothin'-but-a-machete Adrian who yoinks snakes outta trees and pets swamp puppies and will unflinchingly dig around in elephant faeces for signs of a rare parasitic tapeworm if needed.
Oh, humans eat socially? No problem, Adrian has observed many many animals eat. Did you know that an obscure species of small underground dirt creature from the north side of Erid also eats socially? Adrian can give you a not-so-short presentation on them.
Oh, the human has no external carapace and so its internal sounds are absurdly loud, wet and off-putting? No problem, Adrian was just conducting an expedition last month researching the incredible eridian animal, the Wet Loud Worm from the south-east region of Wet Loud Wormland. They're desensitised, it's fine.
Oh, Grace leaks often from many orifices and it can be a bit of a learning curve to get used to? No problem for Adrian, see Wet Loud Worm paragraph again!
Meanwhile, Rocky is bewildered as to how he's managed to third-wheel both of his relationships, because both Adrian and Grace are nerds who nerd out about things, and Adrian is shaking in their carapace with enthusiasm to learn more about human culture and biology, not to mention everything about earth animals. And yeah, sure, Grace might be a molecular biologist, but he'll be damned if he'll pass up an opportunity to learn about alien fauna from a fellow scientist, and yes, Adrian, he'd love to hear about the small underground dirt creature from the north side of Erid, and he's so excited to learn more about the Wet Loud Worm, do go on.

This reread of Project Hail Mary I decided to only draw the flashbacks.
…and I realise that my palette implied Grace only took 5 shirts with him to the aircraft carrier. 5 shirts, one sweater and a coat. For years of research and development.
I want to read the book again a third time. Maybe that time we’ll do Rocky only.
