After thoughts on Endgame
I did my fair share of digesting the plot the past 48h, and I think I kinda get it:
The way time travel works in Endgame involves alternate realities. You cannot affect the future by going to the past. Rather, you would simply create an alternate timeline in which things are different — at least that's what is suggested by the Ancient One when she tells Bruce that an Infinity Stone leaving would cause an alternate timeline.
In Endgame, Bruce explained to the team some of the laws of time travel. Each individual's future is definitive. What if this entire time, Steve was meant to go back to Peg and his future in the MCU all along was to return to her? Steve's story has truly come full circle. (In short, there were 2 Steves all along in the whole MCU timeline till The Avengers won. And I dont rule out the possibility of future Steve going back in time serves an inspiration for Peg to start SHIELD.)
And you can’t convince me otherwise that Nat’s death, and their whole relationship dynamic was a pushing factor for him to do this whole causal loop, because.
“You, first”. Because he knows this is the right thing to do. Because he knows this is what Nat would want him to do. Because future Steve did not see her in a minute. Because he (Old Steve) deserves his fair share of bidding Nat goodbye all over again from the sidelines during the MCU timeline.
Steve and Peg got their happy ending. But let’s be honest and face it, Nat has been, and is always going to be the one who sticks.
The only regret I have is not to be able to see Steve mourn for Nat, and not being able to see what happened on Vormir when Steve returned the soul stone. I guess these are the parts where they become an open brief for fanfic writers, yeah?
I am not even sure this will even make sense to myself after a sleep. But this is the most I can handle (and theorise with) right now with my own shit heart after Endgame’s ending.
