1 year & 1 day. That’s how long it’s been since I’ve seen this little face. I‘d planned on posting yesterday but it was just too hard, as have been the previous 365 days. I have long owed my best friend a tribute, but I cry too much when I look at her picture, so here we are, 366 days later. 366 days of missing her elaborate greetings, miles of walks together, snuggles & kisses, her love of my family, friends, & our children, & her undying loyalty & love for me, her person. She embraced with gusto wherever she found herself, but definitely had favorites: our beloved NC mountains, home in Charleston, the Carolina beaches, our family’s wide-open farm in Sumter, & majestic Central Park. I picture her on a mountainside with the cool wind in her face, racing down the beach like a bullet after a ball, playing in the fields among the horses, or crashing joyfully into snow drifts with reckless abandon, that bright pink tongue hanging out, eyes glistening. Losing her was like losing a part of my physical self— anyone who knows me knows she was always with me, but her favorite place of all was just where her people were. Her smile & and joy at simply being together added so much to even the best & most perfect day, while her downy soft fur was a blanket for buckets of tears during hard times, helping me through some of the most trying & difficult seasons of my life, when sometimes the humans you thought would be there weren’t. I will never forget those brown eyes staring, listening, so intent, so focused. Her unwavering love & steadfastness could teach a lot of us about loyalty & true friendship. I hear Daniel & Virginia pray for Sully in heaven & my eyes consistently fill with tears, realizing the impact she had on their short lives & how much she taught us all about what devotion looks like. The challenge of transitioning to life post-Sully has been a monumental one, one I feel I won’t ever truly be able to embrace in the same way, but she gave us almost 12 years of the happiest of times & the purest love, utterly defining the meaning of true friendship.
