Crit notes
Lucy mentioned that it did not seem part of the room (as was the intention), rather a show room, presenting something which does not connect as a private space.
I believe this was down to a few aspects which needed work…
The gaps around the fabrics on the wall. At first my intention was to show in a separate room, and so cut the fabrics according to those measurements. It meant that the fabrics did not cover the entire wall and so meant rather than appearing as the wall, it was simply just fabric pinned to it.
The piece overall was to small to the size of the room, it seemed to be an essence of something else rather than something contained within that space.
I think to fully understand the potential of the piece I need to expand the fabrics, make more and be more ambitious with the size of the work.
An interesting point that was brought up during the crit was how much do all the works rely on themselves being viewed from within the home. Would the works have the same resonance if they were in a white cube ? This is something that I hope to explore in the end of year show next term.
