(spoiler free review)
So !!! I’ve been ready for this film since I heard about it last August & I’ve been carefully selecting what films I watched for the last week to get the most out of this & now I’ve finally ran fifteen minutes through the rain in London while screaming @ google maps and it was SO worth it !! (and Hannah Einbinder & Gillian Anderson made a special appearance to introduce the movie!!)
This film is everything I wanted it to be & everything it promised. It explores the sex appeal of slashers and the gender troubles and everything the weird queer horror fanbase wants to see without feeling like it’s overexplaining itself & it stays funny and heartfelt! I’d argue even calling this a horror film is a misclassification it’s far more of a comedy ABOUT horror, but obviously horror & horror movies are so deep in its DNA it wouldn’t make sense it classify it as anything but. It’s an incredibly addicting real representation of freak horror and I cannottt get enough.
Kris & Billy as characters are perfect. Their dynamic is perfect. From the first moment they’re on screen there’s real tension and it’s so fun. There’s so much care and beauty in their relationship and as ridiculous as it sometimes is (especially on Billy’s side; she’s one of the campest aspects of this film and Gillian Anderson’s peformance is unbelievable. The southern accent is … questionable but in a way that elevates the film. IMO.) it’s utterly engrossing. Kris feels authentic enough to connect with & she’s so funny. Felt really represented by all of her annoying interjections while watching & discussing film. (‘Split diopter!’ she says, and then I’m excitedly pointing out a dolly zoom to my (I’d say equally excited) girlfriend ten minutes later.)
The entire film is operating on five hundred levels of film & meta & unreality at all times and it runs them together so smoothly you just can’t question it. You watch the characters in the movie acting out reality as the other characters watch the movie they’re in as they’re living the movie. And again it does all this without beating you over the head with it & the whole thing plays out as a unified experience.
Like every Schoenbun feature, it has incredibly rich imagery and is overall just gorgeous to look at . (With a perfect soundtrack too — didn’t realise there was a Gerard Way track on there until the train journey home. It’s making me think I should start listening to Gerard Way.) I’m very proud to say I got to watch Hannah Einbinder and Gillian Anderson fuck on a bed of shiny candy wrappers on the big screen.
Also, the whole supporting cast was incredible. I cannot possibly describe the feeling I got seeing Patrick Fischler of Mulholland Drive warning them about the camp. Cleverly casted & brilliant acting all round. Jack Haven is amazing.
& without spoilers I’d just like the say it features two of the best sequences in a slasher film maybe ever. Kris running from Little Death is such a beautifully crafted and exhilarating and funny moment. It’s also one of the best sex scenes in a slasher film ever. Perfect perfect film. Jane Schoenbrun there’s really no one doing it like you.

RIVALS SPOILERS!!!
The Archie x Caitlin ‘sex scene’ at the start of episode 6 is SO underrated I haven’t heard anybody talking about it.
In a show so driven by physical desire, it was so refreshing to see a more “realistic” scene showing two teenagers being silly and in love, instead of the heated passion of the other scenes. It was ALSO good because they’re significantly younger than the protagonists and I was worried about how they would handle that, but it reminded me of sex education in the way that it was romantic without being romanticised.
TV shows have got to be more realistic about sex because not only is it educational and relatable it also makes for good TV!!! people like to see themselves in media, and whats more universal than awkwardly being in love with someone. it’s awesome!!

maybe im too woke and i think about misogyny too much but it is just a tiny bit weird to me how often i see poorly treated women characters in fandom just labelled as lesbians and shipped with random side characters . her marriage isn’t tragic because shes a lesbian her marriage is tragic because she was forced into it and died and got completely sidelined by the narrative . why is your only way to talk abt her to be omg queer girl boss yes yes yes … can you not empathise her without her being queer???
