I wandered off into the traditionalist tag in Tumblr, and oh boy… I don’t have anything against women who want to be traditional house wives, but what bothers me is that it’s such an ~*~aesthetic~*~ 21st century bullshit postmo dream. Being a housewife in the tag is about having a (very expensive) cottage somewhere in the countryside with some (expensive) cutesie furniture that you got in Dunnes Stores and making all these nices pies with all the baking knick knacks you can get at Tesco or whatever. 

My mum chose to be a stay-at-home wife all her life. I’ve always respected and valued her decision, because she did it for us and not because she had some aesthetic value she wanted to live by. I do believe in sticking by your family and friends, I do believe in protecting them, but ultimately, if you truly value the “traditional” values of family and friendship, gender roles and lifestyles don’t fucking matter. My mother never divorced not because she was a full traditionalist who enshrined marriage for marriage’s sake; she never divorced because she believed it was the best for us and for the family. I was raised in a household that for all intents and purposes was very traditional but that taught me that it’s my job as a woman to protect my own, and to provide for myself and for my own, and how I go about it is my own problem, and no one elses. Having grown up in that, I understand that actual “traditional” gender roles don’t come in a faux 50s dress with a white picket fence.
