The matrix of the culture industries and the matrix of identity are just an illusion of the world we live in. they are both all around us at all times. We decide whatâs normal and whatâs not normal in this world. Its hard for us to live outside the norm, but we all know it would be and is much more fun to live outside the norm when we take the chance. I would say that my biggest takeaway from Pop Culture Freaks is to be mindful of the media that we consume and the messages that entail this media. We are constantly viewing all types of media whether it be Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, music and its lyrics, TV shows, etc., and it is important to know when certain media is being harmful to a group or relaying the wrong messages, as well as when to appreciate certain types of media for the messages they are sending. I think that the talk back letter was a great way to get us to put this concept to the test and tell producers of media if their content is sending positive or negative messages and letting our voices be heard and if we appreciate what they are doing for society. For example, I did my talk back letter on a show called Everything Sucks!, a Netflix original show that my mom actually got me started on when we were bored at our lake cabin this winter. At first, I just watched it. But when I decided to do my talk back letter on it and actually analyze the show, I realized how much the show shied away from the norm of messages we see portrayed in tv and how even the main characters ethnicities were different from what we typically see as well.
