While We Wait For Whatever

i was talking about this on my server earlier but i really think "cozy" is one of the worst genre labels out there in the gaming space. like people dunk on the terms "metroidvania" and "first person shooter" a lot for being uncreative or limiting but at least those are like... falsifiable descriptors. you can look at a game and go "yeah this game's mechanics and core gameplay loop generally operate like metroid/castlevania" or "yeah this game primarily uses a first person camera paired with some sort of projectile weapon" so i don't think they're completely useless. but "cozy" is just nonsense. fully subjective. i see a lot of games popularly labeled as "cozy" that share almost zero mechanical features between them and don't even always match in tone or aesthetic. hearing a game described as "cozy" doesn't tell you anything about what to expect as a player beyond maybe giving you a sort of forewarning about the fanbase and their discomfort tolerance. "cozy" is not a quantifiable metric. like imagine if someone offered to buy you takeout and asked you what kind of food you'd like and you told them fully unironically, and with no further elaboration, "i want to get yummy food." that's what hearing "cozy games" sounds like to me

i especially chafe at the way "cozy games" just seems like a "woke" way to say "girl games" and conflate certain game mechanics or aesthetics with a non-cis/het/male identity (to equally useless effect from a buyer's pov). gender stereotyping by any other name is still gender stereotyping. i'm not cis het or male, but i've spent decades enjoying pvp shooters and feel bored to tears by cutesy cottagecore farming sims. and i find those pvp shooters very "cozy" to play, too! @_@;

can we bring back the term "fair-weather friend" bc I feel like if fair-weather friends got called that more this whole argument about whether or not you should be there for your friends when it's inconvenient/at what point of personal inconvenience it's ok to bail on your friends would kinda fall apart bc like. we literally have a word for "friend who's only there when you don't need something from them" because the baseline expectation is that a friend should be there even when it sucks. like we used to make fun of people for bailing on their friends.

I am whatever the opposite of a speed runner is. I am a game meanderer. I have to look at literally everything. I am overly cautious in every way. I forget to pause and wander away from the game. I take a minimum 7 hours to get through any given level. If you give me a timer I will cry.

i know everyone is tired of hearing it from me but i'll never be free from how people think you can only ship a het ship WOKELY if the man is a pathetic useless idiot and the girl babysits and pegs him and has the personality of a door. i promise you won't get your woke card revoked if you spend five minutes of your time to consider the girl has a personality and the guy might be a competent person. and maybe she likes getting dicked down and is a little pathetic too. have you considered also liking the girl and maybe wanting her to be a spoiled baby too? also I'll Kill You

we need to instill a new storytelling rule of thumb into people called "show don't tweet" where we encourage them to put all pertinent canon information into the actual story and its official supplemental material instead of using reddit AMAs as lore dlcs

i think as a writer, the older you get and the more you read, the more you realize there are very few actual truly bad ideas. which is a relief. but! the other thing you learn is that stories live and die on the execution and ha ha. lemme tell you. unfortunately. there are lots and lots of bad ways to execute an otherwise fine idea

personal least favourite media criticism experience has got to be when people are like it's so great that the writers don't rely on sexual abuse/assault as an easy shortcut to actual character or narrative development and you're like sure i guess and then they're like i mean it's just so gratuitous and unnecessary, you'd have to be some kind of sick pervert who hates women to rely on something like that, honestly unless you're making something About sexual violence i don't think it should exist at all, it's just lazy writing, and you're like oh this never had anything to do with caring about victims for you did it

in a similar vein, when people recommend a work on the basis that it contains no themes of sexual violence and there's blatant subtext that suggests otherwise but now you know if you point it out you're going to be seen as a disgusting predator and fun ruiner and expected to submit a comprehensive disclosure of your own personal history of abuse for review to determine whether you're "allowed" to talk about it

we need another bidoof’s law to refer to the phenomenon where someone says some rude stupid shit in the reblogs of your post and you go to their blog and all their posts are about nature loving you and being kind to each other and cute illustrations about friendship etc. the cognitive dissonance

semi-related and i do understand that the plagiarism was the main focus. but it does still boil my blood a bit that literally everyone seemed to just ignore the whole part of hbomberguy's video where he and kat were specifically calling out somerton for his misogyny, lesbophobia and biphobia. like idk. seems like something we should maybe have a chat about. why WAS this immensely popular gay youtuber able to spout such clearly bigoted rhetoric with little to no pushback. and why did everyone just keep blaming straight and bisexual women for everything and treating lesbians like a devilish hivemind who whine too much

I think making character playlists is good for you and connected to analysis skills in a very fun way and low investment way. I know its seen as quite trivial but to me it operates the same way looking at a lot of art builds ur skills passively. Yummy enrichment activity
