who: @bluenolcn
where: mama + blueâs house
look, he knows he shouldnât be sitting on the counter â â counters are for glasses, not for dirty asses, â his mama would scold him for climbing up onto them as a child â but sheâs not home, and heâll be damned if it ainât the perfect spot to enjoy a slice of the banana bread he found hiding under a tin foil cover on her stove top when he was checking to see if she or blue were around. but heâs not up there more than five minutes when he hears keys in the door and he looks up, takes a second to register that someoneâs home, and quickly leaps from the counter as if heâs still just a boy afraid of being reprimanded by his mama. ( and so what if he is? ) he brushes away the crumbs that have fallen from his paper towel to the floor with his boot, kicking them under the counter and into oblivion and thinking about how sheâd be even more pissed if she were to witness that. rhys lets out a breath he didnât even realize heâd been holding in the form of a laugh when he realizes itâs just his sister whoâs come through the door, and he shakes his head, turning his attention back to the banana bread as he hops back up onto the counter. â scared the hell outta me for a second there, â he chuckles, â thought you were âbout to be mama cominâ in here to get on me for messinâ up the kitchen. you try this yet? might just be âcause i skipped lunch, but this shitâs delicious. whatâre you up to? â
there are days when blue wished they didnât exist, and this was certainly one of them. the day had been a disaster from the very beginning, a bottle of nail polish falling from the top of their dresser and smashing all over the floor, leaving them with dots of red all over her clothes to set the mood for the remaining hours they needed to be awake. normally they didnât try to let the small things get to them, but when they were finally released from work and got back in their car, they couldnât wait to get home. the drive was tranquil yet stressful, their road rage bubbling up to the surface as person after person cut them off in traffic. truth be told, the only thing blue nolan had going for them was the freshly-baked banana bread that theyâd left on the stove top, a treat that they planned to indulge in while they binged gilmore girls and wished for a place like stars hollow. but as they climbed out of their car and jiggled their keys to get into that little southside house, blue stopped dead in their tracks at the sight of their brother devouring that baked treat. âwhatâre you doinâ on mamaâs counter, rhys oâconnor?â it was the first thing that came out of their mouth, followed by a petulant cross of their arms over their waist. âyou know damn well mama would smack you upside the head if she saw you up there, especially since youâre eating the bread i worked so hard on.â blue moved closer to their brother as they spoke, snatching the tin away and shielding it from him. âyou better get down before i tell on you.â
