Thinking very much about Pretzel today, and just how much she would have seen. Thinking about Edyn passing her to a boy covered in bruises, and yet the largest, brightest smile on his face. Thinking about how he probably cried when Edyn gave her to him, and clutched the little orb so close to his chest that she could feel his heartbeat against the glass. And Gillion would introduce himself to her with his full name and his title, so enthusiastic and ecstatic to just look at her, and hold her.

How many times did she wait for Gill to come back to his chambers after long days of training, only for him to open the door battered and exhausted and shadowed by the frame of not just the architecture, but by the heavy weight of duty? How many nights did he spend holding her close—so gently for a boy so strong and molded into a weapon? How often did he break down into heaving tears, speaking through painful, shuddering sobs about how he was not good enough. How he would never be good enough—not as strong, as smart, as fast or as dextrous as he needed to be, and that all he amounted to was a failure. Did he weep and pull her close to his chest under the cover of a blanket, whispering about how useless he was, how no one truly cared for him or loved him in the building meant to be his home, how his parents gave him away like he was nothing, and the Elder's treated him like a fool, and how much he resented all of them for it? And when he realized the weight of these confessions, did she watch him reprimand himself, punish himself for daring to be a boy who felt anything more than divine?

And after such a breakdown, did she see him train, even after he was supposed to? Practicing footwork with a stashed prop sword he hid in his room into the late night, neglecting his sleep, looking at her every time he gets it right and smiling so big and bright that she can't help but trill and dance with excitement. And when he'd get it right the next day, he'd rush back to tell her that he'd done it, and that his mentor or trainer or an Elder had seemed satisfied with his performance. And with every success he'd tell her that he was going to be the embodiment of justice and divinity and in the fray of his enthusiasm, she is too late to notice how bit by bit, he becomes a sword before he is a person.

When the elders made him kill, and finally pushed him to the point that the thought of the act was just duty to him, did she ever see him find stray drops of blood in his hair or on his skin and scrub at them like they were nothing? And when Edyn stopped being allowed to visit, did she watch him wait for her to come back, and did she ever see him give up? And finally, finally, when he did what he had been GROOMED to do since before he could reach a counter without a step stool, and was tossed away like nothing, what did she see in his face as they drifted off together into endless ocean?
