âHaru!â, I glanced up from my phone as I saw my girlfriend rushing towards me. I gave her a warm smile as she kissed me on the cheek and interlaced our fingers together. âHey, how were classes?â I asked starting to walk to the lunch room with her âeh, some old same old, Dr. Nakamura is staying on my ass with my Kinesiology work but heâs just being dramaticâ she said. I chuckled, âhe just cares about your grades, heâs a great Bio teacherâ I said âyeah cause you're one of his favsâ she teased âwhat!? No Iâm not, he doesnât have favoritesâ I said. âOh yes he does, he likes the first years because they haven't hit the delinquent phase of the second and third yearsâ she said.Â
âI doubt it, maybe you just need some food. You look pale and youâre not yourself when you're hungryâ I said, poking her stomach. She whined and smirked down at me, she grabbed me by my waist, âyou know what else I can eat that could satisfy both of us?â she asked. I knew where her mind was and it only resulted in me flicking her forehead, âpervert! Keep acting like that and weâre going celibateâ I said. âWE?!â she exclaimed. I ignored her irritation and headed to the lunch room as she followed me.
The room was half filled with students and a bunch of employees taking orders and bringing out food. The first and second years share lunch periods so we usually eat together with Yuki, our fellow libero and Akanes best friend, Yuki is known to be as an inspirational mentor on the court and Ms. Matchmaker. If it wasnât for her constant encouragement with Akane, me and her wouldnât be together right now. Akane is now even more indebted to her because of it and Iâm also grateful for her help.Â
The table we usually take was towards the back of the room, we found nothing but Yuki's bag at one of the chairs and a note on the table. âDear Love birds, I got our table and the yogurt smoothie I had this morning got me. I shall be in the washroom for a good while so just eat and if Iâm not back in twenty minutesâŚplease helpâ. We both let out a sigh, âyou order your food, Iâll go check on her and text you if I need backupâ she said. I laughed, âalright, good luckâ I said, taking the menu as she placed a kiss on my head and rushed to the washrooms.Â
âWe told her to stop taking in yogurt, itâs bad for your stomach, but noooo, she had to listen to the internetâ I said to myself as I scanned today's specials. As I decided on my meal, I felt a presence next to me, âthat was fast, is she alr-â I was cut off as I saw who I was speaking to. It wasnât Akane. âHan-chan! Hey, how have you been?â Kiyomi, one of my classmates, had sat next to me âoh hey, Iâve been fineâ I said âthatâs good, I saw you walk in with Kubo-senpai. Hand in hand being all lovey-doveyâ she said with an innocent smile. Here it goes, Iâm no stranger to the underlying passive-aggressive homophobia the girls at the school give to us, more me, no one's gonna approach Akane and critique her on her relationships without a black eye later on.
Iâm more on the passive side so people do take the opportunity to express their unwanted opinions on my life. Kiyomi is one of the main people who likes to express it but itâs starting to getâŚirritating. âUm yes, we are in a relationship. A lot of people knowâ I said, trying to be mature about whatâs going on right now. âRight, but donât you think itâs a littleâŚweird with Lu-senpai?â she asked. My expression dropped slightly, âyou mean Yuki? Why would it be weird?â I asked âI mean, I thought that it was a three way thing?â she said âthree-way? N-no, me and Akane are exclusiveâ I said âoh! Iâm so so sorry! I just figured with the amount of time theyâve spent together and they were that classic duo before you got here, maybe something would happenâ she said.Â
My stomach dropped, what is she saying? Akane and Yuki? âI donât want to alarm you, but they spend so much time together, they have so many classes together knowing that theyâre both second years, even last year they were so closeâŚit really makes you wonderâ she said. NoâŚAkane wouldnâtâŚshe wouldnâtâŚYuki-san isnt even into girlsâŚright? âBut hey, maybe itâs for the best, arenât relationships like that a little complicated in China? Your parents didnât send you here toâŚdishonor them, right?â she asked.Â
âDid your parents send you here to skip class?â
We both jumped and turned to see Amami-senpai hovering over Kiyomi, âGah! Amami-senpai? What are you doing here?â she asked standing quickly from her chair âI would ask you the same thing, your lunch period isnât for another two hours, arenât you supposed to be in class?â she asked âu-umâŚyes but-â she got cut off almost immediately âthen you shouldnât be here, I know I might not be your classes vice-president but Iâm still one and I can write you up for it. So Iâll give you a chance and let you go with just a late slipâ she said, giving her a smile that could cut air.Â
Kiyomi cleared her throat before bowing to her and rushed out the room. A small smile appeared on my face but it wasnât enough to stop the breakdown I was about to have, Amami-senpai sat next to me and let out a sigh of annoyance, âjesus itâs not hard to just go to class, I can;t stand first yearsâŚexcept youâ she said said smiling at me. I gave her a smile back, âthanksâŚumâŚAmami-senpai, isnât your lunch also in two hours?â I asked âI have free period right now, and I wanted a milkshake, are the other two around here or are they causing trouble? Cause we have a game soon and coach needs both of them on the courtâ she said.Â
âAh no, Yukiâs in the washroom and Akane is there toâŚhelp her, she had yogurtâ I said âoh god, if theyâre not doing anything illegal then I donât care, I swear those two are partners in crime and Iâm tired of dealing with their bullshitâ she said. I nodded, the things Kiyomi had said came flooding back and my mood had dropped once again, it also seems like I canât keep it to myself either. âWhatâs wrong?â she asked âhuh? Oh nothing itâs justâŚan odd day you knowâ I said messing with the ends of my blazer sleeve. She gave me a curious look, âI donât buy it, youâre not an angry person, and when you are upset it shows. Did that girl say something to you?â she asked.Â
I let out a sigh of defeat, Amami-senpai is a very observant person and when she found something off she wasnât going to let it go until she solved the problem. I might as well, maybe I can get the answers I need.Â
âAlright, just a question, had Lu-senpai ever been with a girl before?â I asked, her facial expressions dropped from curiosity to shock, âYuki? With a girl? Never in a million yearsâ she said. A sigh of relief had left me, a weight was lifted off my shoulders knowing that there wouldnât be a chance. âWhy?â she asked âwhy? Oh! UmâŚI was just thinkingâŚKiyomi-san said that her and Akane were pretty close and there might be a chance that they wou-â I was cut off, âstop talkingâ she said. âHuh?â I asked, âdid this girl really try to convince you that Akane and Yuki would get together?â she asked. I blushed a bit, âwellâŚI guess soâ I said âdid she say anything else to you?â she asked ânothing too bad, just stuff about my parents and stuffâ I said âoh this bitch, Iâm definitely getting on her ass nowâ she said.Â
âListen Haru, some people have to mind their own business. I know that we both hear the shit that people say about you and Akane and itâs sickening to say the least. If I could stop it all myself I would because you both donât deserve that, and you should never think that youâre letting your parents down because of your actions, especially when youâre happy. AND, Akane and Yuki are not getting together. Theyâve been friends forever but theyâd rather go through the seven circles of hell then date each other, trust meâ she said.Â
âSo donât think about that stuff, keep your relationship the way it is and if anyone else wants to test the waters. Text meâ she said.Â
I gave her a sincere smile and took her hands into mine, âthank you Amami-san, you know people are wrong about you. Youâre not scary or mean at all!â I said âyeahâŚwait, what?â she asked ânothing! Thank you for the advice, let me get you that milkshake you wantâ I said, having a cold sweat.Â
~Later~
âRise, have you noticed that Akanes spikes have been a lot more powerful?â Yukiko asked âuh yeahâŚitâs a long story but just now I handled itâ Rise smiled proudly âok? Well, I'm glad youâre helping the underclassmen. Itâs not like youâ she said âyeahâŚalso, have you heard anything about me being cold or mean?â Rise asked.Â
Yukiko froze a bit and glanced at her, âumâŚno why?â she asked âbecause I heard it and you paused as well, do you have something to tell me?â she asked ânope! I need to go help Makoto with something, Iâll see you later!â. That was the first time Rise ever saw Yukiko run that fast and that day was the day Rise made Haru her personal inside man.Â
