Every year I forget about Knife-Wielding Tentacle until this post comes around

happy birthday :3

So rarely does an artist come around and influence and impact so many generations of music and theatre lovers. He was the best of the very best. It just wont be the same without him, but we were so fucking lucky to have him for as long as we did. Thank you, Stephen Sondheim.

the thing i really love about hadestown is anais mitchell took this myth that has (at least as it’s been told to me) been framed as “sometimes you get really close and you still fail, because humans are flawed and it just sucks” and she said “no you guys, what orpheus was trying to do should have been impossible and he almost made it anyway. the only reason he failed is because he stopped believing he could succeed”

ALSO what is so interesting for me is that orpheus didn’t just fail because he doubted himself; he failed because he felt alone. like hermes said, hades divided - and conquered. like. literally one of the most basic ideas in fighting a system, in overthrowing a corrupt power is - organize, strength in numbers, believe that we are many, believe that they are few. the movement will only fail if your unity does too. hades literally takes that away from orpheus, makes it impossible for him to know he is supported, he is loved, by isolating him. it was supposed to be impossible and hades knew it. the ones who load the dice always say the toss is fair. we play the game they fix.
