Nancy:

name: Nathan Lewis Wheeler

the thing about Nancy is that so much of her character arc is bound to her being a young woman growing up in a conservative small town and finding her own strength by fighting against the constant types of misogyny she faces and that's kind of hard to do with a male character.

so I guess the closest we can come is toxic masculinity.

Nathan was a fairly sensitive kid and was constantly criticized for being too emotional by Theresa (his mom) and eventually learned to bottle up his emotions as he got older and become more self conscious, he stopped doing anything 'too feminine' like dressing up for his sister's D&D campaigns.

starts trying to social climb at school and distances himself from his best friend Bobby to do so.

everything else happens the way it usually does.

Bobby goes missing and Nathan has to deal with his grief while the people around him view him as weak and lesser than for being so deeply affected.

the movie theatre happens differently because calling a boy promiscuous doesn't have the same weight as doing it to a girl so the only way Stephanie could possibly get the same reaction is by emasculating him somehow, by writing something about his sexuality or his body to make him seem like less of a man.

the rest of Nathan's arc becomes about accepting the more 'feminine' sides of himself without being ashamed of them.

Max:

name: Maxwell 'Max' Clifford Mayfield.

most of his arc is the same but his dynamic with Billie now has the added layer of him being embarrassed of being scared of his older sister.

still doesn't get on with Michelle but is less vocal about it because someone accused him of having a crush on her.

was the reason Michelle was dressed like that in Lenora because he told that's what people wore in California.

Wrote letters to El, not loads but a couple every month or so, and always signed them 'love from Max.'

got really close to Will when Daphne was away at camp.

has no idea Daphne ever had a crush on him.

Robin:

name: Robin Daniel Buckley.

his parents think he's dating Stephanie and he doesn't have the heart to tell them the truth.

he feels super guilty about it and is afraid his parents are going to brig it up in front of her so he never let's Stephanie hang out at his house.

has a really strained relationship with his dad.

told his parents he was trying out for the football team instead of Band.

was the first person Stephanie ever came out too.

runs movie night like the U.S navy.

Eleven:

name: Jamie 'Eleven' Byers Hopper Ives.

ok so this is really niche but you know how in those fics about Steve being a lab kid he's usually 7 and people mishear him and think his name is Steven? I feel like this Happens with El only people mishear Eleven as Alvin.

still views Nathan as being really pretty and wants to be pretty like him in season one, because he doesn't know that pretty isn't something you usually call boys, purely because words like Handsome and charming and other typically masculine compliments are only used for people but words like Pretty, and, gorgeous and beautiful can be used for anything that's nice to look at so in his mind if something or someone looks nice it's automatically pretty.

still wears Nathan's old clothes but instead of a wig he wears a hat to hide his buzzcut, in my heart of hearts it's a cowboy hat.

doesn't cut his hair.

his relationship with Michelle is even more strained because books and tv keep telling him that girls are just complicated like that so he doesn't really understand that relationships should have more communication.

had a flawed idea of dating and thought that if someone's interested in you that means you have to like them back.

no longer believes that though.

finds out about Willa's crush on Michelle after Michelle tries to thank him for the painting.

Angela:

 she's the only shepherd who's closet isn't full of hand me downs but most of it is from thrift stores

Dresses similar to Sylvia but more colourful.

Darry:

 all of their clothes come from their dad which works out pretty well for Darry because he fits in them pretty well.

Mostly work shirts and jeans.

And boots.

Wears his dads old jacket until he grows out of it.

It still sits in the back of his closet, he’ll never get rid of it.

Sodapop:

 He’s shorter and skinnier than Darry so he has to cuff the jeans until he gets a job at the dx and can afford to buy his own. 

Wears a lot of plain T-shirts.

Used to own a pair of cowboy boots when he was a kid.

doesn't really smoke but keeps a pack rolled up in his shirt sleeve because he thinks it looks cool.

Leaves the first three buttons undone whenever he wears shirts.

Ponyboy:

 a lot smaller than both Darry, and Soda so he  has to wear a belt with all of the jeans he gets given, and because of the belt they all become high-waisted his shirts hide it but they’re  also really long.

Wears a lot of flannels.

Owns like three pairs of tennis shoes.

so all his clothes are stained a little bit with paint.

draws on the cuffs of his jeans.

Two-bit:

His sister Deana works at a thrift shop so he gets a discount 

He  also gets given all the clothes they can't sell (he keeps some and gives the rest to Johnny)  whether it's because they're broken or stained or simply because no one wants them 

Two-bit's entire closet is just full of ugly sweaters and Hawaiian shirts because of this.

Steve:

 kinda the same as Sodapop in the way not all of his clothes fit him perfectly but good enough.

Wears wife beaters under his coveralls and they’re stained with motor oil.

       Dallas:

He owns like six shirts (all bloodstained to some degree) and three pairs of jeans all of which have holes but he makes it work.

Him and Tim share clothes but no one notices.

Johnny:

everyone has made it their responsibility to help Johnny out other than stuff from Two-bit he has old shirts from Ponyboy and a couple of too-big jackets from Dallas

wears his shoes until they are unwearable.

Most of his jeans have burn marks from cigarettes.

Safety pins his jeans to fit him because he doesn’t own a belt.

Tim:

Tim’s clothes come from questionable sources no one is sure if they even want to know.

 all of his shirts are Tim's old ones and they are way too big so he tries to make them shorter by cutting them he cuts the sleeve's to make them muscle shirts but he miscalculates by a long shot and makes the cuts too big holes it's still wearable but it looks a little odd

 and he cuts them to make them shorter and it works but at what cost .

 He's also too skinny and short to fit in Tim's old jeans so he has to borrow Angela's until he can buy his own.

Everyone rips into him for owning them.

ends up opening her own little gallery with her wife in san-Francisco when she's in her thirties.

and they were so right and this got me thinking about how out of the five greaser girls mentioned in the book only four of them are named and the two of them that get the most characterisation, Sylvia and Sandy our viewed by Ponyboy in a way that is at least subconsciously parallels the way Ponyboy feels about the boy's they are attached to.

Ponyboy sees Soda's girlfriend Sandy as a 'nice girl' and point's out that she's not like the other greaser girls that are 'tough, loud girls who wore too much eye makeup and giggled and swore too much.' Sandy is nothing like that because her hair is naturally blonde and 'china blue eyes' and she laughs softly despite having the same upbringing as most of the other greaser girls.

Ponyboy puts Sandy on a pedestal because her personality and appearance seem to give proximity to being a Soc girl in Ponyboy's head; who are described to have 'bright eyes and had their dresses a decent length.'

Ponyboy has such a high opinion of Soda so it makes sense that he sees his girlfriend the same way being as close to Soda as he is means Ponyboy has probably heard a lot about Sandy from Soda so he sees her from Soda's perspective.

Ponyboy sees Sandy as someone who is completely different than any of the other greaser girls which makes her ending so ironic, she ends up doing what so many other greaser girls do, she gets pregnant like Angela, after cheating on Soda the same way Sylvia cheats on Dallas.

which brings us to Sylvia. Sylvia is Dallas's on again off again girlfriend while we don't know as much about her as we do Sandy we know more about her than; Evie or Kathy or Two-bit's sister or Steve's cousin from Kansas.

Sylvia is depicted as promiscuous, cheating on Dallas when he was in jail and flirting with Johnny when Dallas was in Reform, Sylvia is also one of the girls listed when Ponyboy describes all greaser girls as 'tough, loud girls who wore too much eye makeup and giggled and swore too much.' this makes sense when you take into account Dallas and the way Ponyboy views him; Ponyboy is intimidated by Dallas and for good reason. we don't know if Ponyboy ever met Sylvia but we can imply he hasn't considering he doesn't describe her at all and we aren't given any first hand accounts of her behaviour, so the only impression Ponyboy can have of her is based off the things people say about her and who her boyfriend is.

Edwin confesses his feelings to Charles and they had this beautiful conversation where Charles tells him that even if he’s not sure that he’s in love with Edwin back, he still loves him more than anything and tells him that they’ll always be best friends and says that Edwin is the only person he’d go to hell for and honestly I would have done anything for the water tower scene to have been written that way because even if Byler didn’t get together Will deserved to have his feelings acknowledged as more than a school crush and it would have helped make Mike feel more like his original characterisation.

I'm trying to get my mind off of the finale :)

I feel like Karen toyed around with the idea of making it double barrelled but decided against it.

but when she was a toddler Karen used to call her 'Nancy-Lu' because it was cute.

tries her hardest to keep in connect with the other's.

loyal to a fault.

learns how to crochet as she get's older.

I've started rewatching stranger things 4 and 5 and I've figured what it is about Eddie's character that always felt a little weird to me. while i love him something about his introduction always felt off to me a little.

when we meet Tina in season 5 and Tammy in season 4 it feels natural because these character have already been mentioned enough in the past that their introduction doesn't feel just like a plot device, and while Derek, Vicky and Robin can be introduced as completely new characters and it doesn't feel forced, Eddie's introduction felt like the beginning of the end for him, he felt doomed from the start.

I think that's because it makes sense for character's like Derek, Vicky and Robin not to be mentioned until their respective seasons; Derek is too young to interact with anyone but Holly, Vicky is a relatively quiet character that kind of flies under the Rader and Robin is a unpopular band geek who's a year or two younger than Steve and doesn't run in the same social circle as Nancy.

These character's don't need to be mentioned before hand as it makes sense for them to just show up the way they would in real life; you're best friends annoying little brother, the girl you used to work with, your friends girlfriend, they're just regular people but someone like Eddie makes no sense to just spawn into existence; he's larger than life, he sells drugs to other student's, he mocks jocks to their faces and berates them loudly at lunch while standing on cafeteria tables not only that but he's a high school senior at twenty, meaning not only has he been held back he's been held back multiple times.

given how much time we spent in Hawkins high in seasons one and two it makes no sense that Eddie wasn't even mentioned he's not the kind of character that can exist quietly. Eddie would realistically had at least one run in with Steve and his friends.

what's more confusing is the way the show treats Eddie like he's always been there.

in my opinion Eddie should have been mentioned at least once and it should have been by Johnathan, it would of benefitted both of their character arcs for season 4; in season 2 or 3 Johnathan could have mentioned hanging out with someone named Eddie a couple times and not only does it make Eddie's character feel a little more lived in but it makes Johnathan becoming a stoner make more sense because by the time we see him greened out in California Eddie's already sold drugs to Chrissy, so it makes it seem like Johnathan's being smoking weed since at least season 2, which would still make sense as it could of been his way of coping with the event's of season 2 and it would help frame his friendship with Argyle as more than just comedic relief.

I also feel like out of the original cast Johnathan would make the most sense to have history with Eddie other than Steve; they're around the same age, they went to school at the same time, are both treated similarly and they have similar interests they're both really into music and Johnathan has at least mild knowledge of DnD due to Will.

and both have weird tension with Steve. (off topic but i keep seeing edits of how Eddie and Nancy look alike but no ones pointing out how similar Robin and Johnathan look.)

feels pretty lonely now. It never used to bother her but she knows what she's missing out on now.

has plastic stars on her ceiling so she can 'stargaze' inside.

Joanna and her used to get high and 'stargaze' whenever it was too cloudy to actually go outside.

Name: Darlene ‘Darry’ Shyanne Curtis, Named after her mom.

pins her hair up to look more ‘professional.’ 

Works as a secretary for a roofers firm.

Was really popular in high school, she was voted cheer captain in her senior year but her parents died so she had to drop out.

Lost all her friends after dropping out to raise her sisters.

Has a second job as a babysitter on the weekends.

Bails the others out of jail so much that the police call her on impulse.

Used to go ‘skiing’ with her friends, she never actually skied herself but sometimes she misses the snow.

the  Curtis’s don’t have an open door policy anymore but a specific knock you use when you need a place to stay.

Keeps loose change in a pot in her room for emergencies.

Used to have a crush on Elvis Pressley in highschool.

She still has his posters on her wall.

Used to share a room with Soda but moved into her parent's room after they died.

The strongest in the gang and the most ‘physically’ intimidating.

Sodapop:

Name: Sodapop 'Poppy' Patricia Curtis

She wears her hair in bunches.

Still works at the DX but more at the cash register because she’s better with People and  Stevie is better with cars.

Had a boyfriend called Andy

Instead of Sandy cheating, getting pregnant and running away, Soda has a pregnancy scare that makes Andy run away.

After Windrixville  she starts spending time with a Soc boy ‘Sheridan.’

Still known around town for her looks.

Wanted to be a cowgirl when she was a kid.

Wants to start taking night classes in her twenties to get her high school diploma.

Doesn’t go to Vietnam.

Starts working night shifts as a waitress at a 24-hour diner in her late teens-early twenties.

Ponyboy:

Name: Ponygirl ‘Pony’ Michelle Curtis

Only greaser on the girls' track team.

Has her hair in a Ponytail. Annie used to plait it for her but she’s too rough.

Wants to be a writer.

Saving up for a camera.

After her hair was bleached and cut, in Windrixville she gets mistaken for a boy.

The shortest girl in her class.

Wears her dad's old shirts.

Needs glasses.

Scared of fire and loud noises after Windrixville.

Doesn’t consider herself popular but she is well-known.

Gets freckles in the summer.

Always has a lighter.

Got closer to Curly after Windrixville.

Stevie taught her how to drive.

Steve:

Name: Stevie Randle

thick brown hair that she spends a ridiculous amount of time backcombing.

The best engineer at the DX but constantly underestimated.

Banned from dealing with customers due to her lack of filter.

Fiercely overprotective of Soda when it comes to guys specifically Socs.

Considers Pony a little sister.

Has a boyfriend ‘Evan’

Short temper.

Only stayed in school to look out for Pony.

Has always looked up to Annie as a female role model because Annie helped teach her after her mum left.

Insecure about her height.

Loves drag races.

Hates the Beatles.

Can actually sing quite well.

Twobit:

Name: Kelly ‘Twobit’ Mathews

Has a boyfriend called Kenny.

And a younger brother called Dean.

Short curly red hair.

Had a thing with a boy soc ‘Marshal’

Still drinks too much.

Annie’s childhood friend

Dips french fries into milkshakes.

Loves butter popcorn.

Has an issue taking things seriously.

Can walk on her hands.

Can’t sit still.

Actually enjoys movies but can’t watch them quietly.

Johnny:

Name: Jane ‘Janey’ Cade

Wears her hair down, or plaited.

The quietest member of the gang.

Surprisingly sarcastic.

Almost as fast as Pony.

Wears hand-me-downs and a big denim Jacket Dallas gave her to try and curb any attention.

Can be shockingly violent when scared.

Secretly protective of Pony.

Great at picking locks.

Once fell asleep in the boot of Stevie’s car during a game of man hunt.

Dallas:

Name: Dallas Winston

Really messy long blonde hair, just like canon Dallas she’s not a fan of grease so she just let’s it tangle.

Just as violent specifically towards older men.

Like Sylvia but worse.

Cares deeply for Pony and Janey.

Only smokes winstons.

Kicked out of school for violent behaviour. 

Can NOT hold a steady job for the life of her.

Hates kids.

Orphan.

The most intimidating one in the gang in general.

Regularly gets into fights with Tammy Shepard.

Tim:

Name: Tamara “Tammy” Shepard.

Wears her hair up.

Leader of the Shepard outlet.

Runs her gang like the U.S. Navy.

Started looking after her siblings around sixteen after their parents walked out on them.

Doesn’t do much crime herself out of fear of being taken from them permanently.

Like Darlene but a delinquent.

Deeply threatening.

Lives in constant fear of dying too young.

Taught Curly and Angelo how to fight.

Curly:

Name: Cerise ‘Curly’ Shepard

named after her mother

Waist length curly hair 

Steals make up from anywhere.

Has a deeply flawed understanding of love

Uses her femininity and attractiveness to her advantage.

Like Angela but more rabid.

Her idea of romance is dining and dashing with Pony.

Only smokes Marlboro’s 

Steals Pony’s flannels.

Hates pepsi

Smarter than people give her credit for.

Leaves lipstick marks on EVERYTHING.
