Who doesn't love re-watching your favourite show and discovering new interpretations for small details? It could be that Mike insists on trying to reach Dustin multiple times in part to prove to Will that he does care where Dustin is. He got called out and is now trying to do better.

Lucas and Dustin both had a crush on Max in s2, but Dustin moved on and got a gf.. something they didn't do with Will because he already has a love interest(and future bf)
