Silence  swallows  the  room  in  a  single  bite.  The  air  feels  humid,  uncomfortably  damp,  like  the  inside  of  a  carnivore's  mouth.  A  lump  forms  in  Puck's  throat,  the  heart  having  clambered  inside  &  lodged  itself  tightly  between  the  walls.  It  refuses  to  beat,  just  as  he  refuses  to  breathe.

It  stings.  It  stings  in  his  chest  &  eyes.  In  the  back  of  his  head  &  between  his  teeth.  Everything  burns.  There's  smoke  clinging  to  his  clothes  ;  he  can  smell  it.  There's  that  itch  all  over  his  palms  again,  an  itch  that  never  required  bloodshed.  It  spreads  down  to  his  feet,  making  them  shift.  His  eyes  dart  to  the  door.

It  feels  like  a  lifetime  before  she  turns  back  to  Faust,  though  it  was  only  half  a  beat  that  that  wave  of  emotion  crashed  down  around  her.  Puck  shakes  it  away  with  a  simple  tug  at  her  lips, a white flag waved between her & the child that is not hers to keep.

“  You're  right,  ”  she  says  finally,  voice  barely  louder  than  a  whisper.  “  I'm sorry, I  did  not  mean  to  suggest  otherwise.  I  am  not  your  father.  ”

Father.  She  says  'father,'  not  mother.  It feels wrong to say the latter, as if her mouth would tarnish the word.

“  You  may  do  as  you  please,  of  course.  ”

     ❝ Are you even listening   ?   If I wanted to entertain a one-man-audience, I would have attended circus school  &  become . . . ❞     The artificer stopped abruptly in a dismissive huff, straightening up which only ended in a clumsy attempt of finding a stronger stance.    ❝ This is SERIOUS, is what I meant to say. So do TAKE it seriously, would you   ? ❞

Puck  blanched,  tail  tucking  between  his  legs  with  the  scolded  droop  of  his  head.  “  Huh  ?  Of  course  I'm  listening   !  ”  Did  it  look  like  he  hadn't  been  listening  ?

Well,  he  might  have  gotten  a  little  distracted.  Towering  over  the  deep  gnome,  Puck  couldn't  help  but  fret  over  the  stark  difference  between  them.  It  would  be  so  easy  to  trample  Barcus  by  accident.  Or  grab  him  by  the  head  &  squeeze  until  something  popped.

Should  I  crouch  ?

He  scratched  nervously  behind  his  neck.  “  S- Sorry,  I  didn't  mean  to  be  rude.  But, um. I  am taking it seriously.  I  meant it when I said I'd help. Really.  ”

“  Apologies,  ”  he  mumbled,  genuine  remorse  in  his  tone  --  even  as  he  pinched  their  cheek  as  punishment  for  being  elbowed.  They  knew  how  he  hated  sneaking  up  on  them.  Apparently,  silly  quips  were  not  enough  to  prepare  them  for  his  presence. He'd thought at least his footsteps had been loud enough.

Then  again  ...

Puck  tilted  his  head  &  squinted  at  Ianthe's  expression.  He  could  have  sworn  it  had  a  bit  more  life  to  it  than  usual.  A  bit  more  color  in  their  cheeks.  Maybe  they'd  been  too  busy  ogling  to  notice  him.

How  very  unlike  them.

“  I  had  no  idea  you  even  knew  how  to  ogle  someone. Look at you, all grown up.  ”

He  settled  beside  them,  resisting  the  urge  to  push  their  posture  into  something  that  didn't  resemble  a child  shivering in their bed at night.  That  was  a  quirk  of  theirs  that  he  simply  had  no  business  critiquing.  Instead,  he  copied  them,  chin  in  hand.  He  certainly  knew  how  to  ogle  someone.

His  gaze  flicked  towards  the  women  in  the  distance  --  or  at  least  one  of  them ; he ignored the other lest the corner of his eye began to twitch.  Perdita  had  a  habit  of  feigning  indifference,  but  now  Puck  could  see  that  she  smiled  brightly,  petting  the  horse's  mane  with  unabashed delight.  The  tips  of  his  ears  felt  warm  as  he  watched.

“  Do  you  think  they've  noticed  you  yet  ?   Or  are  they  too  absorbed  spoiling  Apple  ?   ” Not to mention that Ianthe was a little too good at blending into the shadows, too. Sometimes it was almost believable that they were really were blood-related twins after all.
