She leans back on her heels, looks him over. “Shower, a good haircut, some makeup to hide the...” She gestures to her face, under her eyes. “You could pull off spoiled little rich boy, I think. If you wanted to.”

“Confidence, mostly. And knowing how to dress.” Her smile isn’t unkind. “I know a girl who was turned when she was ten. In the right clothes, she can walk into clubs and order wine without getting carded. I used to get into parties saying I was a princess. My family farmed cabbages. If you act like you belong somewhere and don’t give room for argument, most people will go along with it.”
