         camille  said  nothing  for  a  while,  allowing  mello's  words  to  sink  in.  his  gaze  drifted  beyond  the  man  before  him,  settling  somewhere  past  the  streets  and  neon  lights.  more  than  often,  memories  had  the  habit  of  pulling  him  in  whenever  that  particular  subject  surfaced.  for  the  vampire  the  past  wasn't  a  place  he  could  simply  visits.  whether  he  liked  it  or  not,  sometimes  it  followed,  sometimes  it  already  waited.  sometimes…  it  was  wearing  a  familiar  face  which  haunted  his  own  reflection.  as  the  thoughts  circled  his  mind,  gloved  fingers  unconsciously  brushed  against  the  worn  key  hanging  at  his  belt  before  coming  to  a  halt.  only  then  did  his  gaze  return  to  mello.

         ❛ i  don't  fear  facing  it. ❜  the  vampire  finally  broke  his  silence,  followed  by  a  faint  shake  of  the  head.  ❛ …  i'm  afraid  of  what  happens  afterwards. ❜  what  will  he  do  when  the  time  comes?  end  his  twin's  life  to  protect  the  lives  of  others?  or…  give  up  and  let  him  get  away?  whatever  the  choice,  it'll  have  consequences.  silence  lingered  between  them  once  more.  however,  this  time  camille's  expression  softened,  if  only  by  a  fraction.  ❛ tell  me. ❜  his  voice  was  almost  a  whisper.  ❛ did  you  ever  face  your  past  and  find  the  closure  you  were  looking  for? ❜

         the  observation  deck  was  nearly  empty  at  this  hour.  beyond  the  reinforced  glass  stretched  an  endless  sea  of  stars,  interrupted  only  by  the  distant  silhouettes  of  orbital  debris  and  the  occasional  shimmer  of  passing  transport  craft.  somewhere  deeper  within  dijiang,  machinery  hummed  with  the  steady  rhythm  of  a  vessel  that  never  truly  slept.  camille  stood  near  the  viewport,  one  hand  resting  loosely  in  his  pocket.  it  wasn't  often  he  found  himself  here,  usually  he'd  remain  in  his  room  finishing  a  puzzle  on  his  own.  yet,  the  quiet  he  found  here,  had  a  way  of  settling  thoughts  he  usually  kept  buried  beneath  reports  and  investigations.

         the  endministrator's  voice  broke  the  comfortable  silence  but  her  company  was  welcome.  for  a  long  moment,  camille  simply  watched  the  stars  drift  past  while  pondering  his  next  words  carefully.  ❛ ...yes. ❜  he  answered  in  a  soft  tone  and  added.  ❛ i  used  to  believe  there  was  only  one  road  before  me. ❜  a  keeper  of  seš'qa.  a  hunter  stuck  in  an  seemingly  endless  cat  and  mouse  chase.  a  brother  destined  to  meet  his  other  half  at  the  end  of  a  prophecy.  ❛ there  was...  a  certain  simplicity  in  believing  that. ❜  his  fingers  brushed  the  pair  of  keys  hanging  from  his  belt  but  their  familiar  chime  was  barely  audible  beneath  the  distant sounds  of  dijiang's  engines.  ❛ back  then…  i  accepted  what  was  meant  to  be  a  temporary  assignment. ❜  as the memory crossed his mind, a  quiet  breath  escaped  him,  suspiciously  close  to  an  amused  chuckle.

         ❛ i  underestimated  how  persistent  you  are. ❜  his  gaze  finally  shifted  from  the  stars  to  endmin.  on  that  day,  he  had  every  intention  of  finishing  his  work  and  returning  to  seš'qa  like  it  was  any  other  mission.  he  fixated  on  the  female in  front  of  him  with  a  gentle  spark  in  his  eyes.  ❛ now…  i  find  myself  walking  side  by  side  with  you. ❜  the  remark  was  delivered  with  perfect  composure,  but  the  faint  lift  at  the  corner  of  his  lips  betrayed  him.  for  someone  else,  it  might  have  passed  unnoticed.  however,  for  the  endministrator,  it  was  practically  a  smile.  feeling  content,  the  keeper  looked  back  toward  the  stars.

         the  alley  had  long  since  fallen  silent.  no  witnesses.  no  footsteps.  only  the  metallic  scent  of  blood  clinging  stubbornly  to  the  cool  night  air.  camille  knelt  beside  the  victim,  gloved  fingers  hovering  just  above  the  drying  crimson.  blood  never  truly  lied.  it  pooled  according  to  gravity,  splattered  according  to  force,  and  remembered  the  violence  that  shaped  it.  his  arts  traced  those  memories  in  silence,  each  detail  carefully  fitted  into  the  next  until  the  image  slowly  began  to  take  form.  ❛ … one  assailant. ❜  he  murmured  to  himself.  ❛ no...  two. ❜  one  fled.  one  remained.  the  realization  settled  in  just  a  little  too  late.  something  moved  behind  him,  something  fast.  instinct  screamed  before  thought  could  follow,  blood  began  to  gather  around  his  hand  just  when  —

         ‘watch  your  back.’  a  familiar  voice  suddenly  cut  through  the  alley.  steel  answered  before  the  vampire  ever  had  the  chance  to.  in  a  flash,  with  a  single  movement,  the  creature  that  had  lunged  from  the  darkness  was  forced  back  with  a  guttural  shriek.  black  ichor  splattered  across  the  pavement  before  it  dissolved  beneath  the  blade  of a scythe that  looked  far  too  practiced  to  belong  in  the  hands  of…

         ❛ the  barista. ❜  the  words  left  him  almost  absentmindedly.  crimson  eyes  lingered  on  the  scythe,  then  the  stance  and  the  ease  with  which  the  other  held  it.  the  pieces  rearranged  themselves  almost  instantly  in  his  head  and  clicked.  ❛ the  cafe... ❜   a  brief  pause,  followed  by  eyes  blinking.  ❛ ...was  never  your  only  profession. ❜   the  vampire  rose  at  last,  blood-red  arts  quietly  blooming  around  his  fingertips.  not  out  of  distrust,  but  readiness,  should  whatever  had  survived  decide  to  attack  again.  ❛ i  owe  you  my  thanks. ❜  his  gaze  returned  to  yoru,  composed  despite  the  surprise  hidden  beneath  it.  being  a  regular  at  the  cafe,  meeting  each  other  like  this  felt…  almost  awkward.  of  course  the  keeper  wouldn't  ever  let it show.  ❛ you…  fight just as well as you brew coffee. ❜

         the  mission  had  ended  hours  ago.  night  had  settled  over  valley-iv  in  quiet  shades  of  blue,  the  city's  lights  reflected  across  rain-slick  streets  as  the  last  of  the  UWST  crew  packed  away  their  equipment.  for  once,  there  were  no  reports  demanding  camille's  attention,  no  blood  trail  to  follow,  no  witness  left  to  question.  he  found  himself  standing  on  one  of  the  elevated  walkways  overlooking  the  area,  arms  folded  in  front  of  his  chest,  while  the  cool  evening  breeze  carried  away  the  lingering  scent  of  iron.

         ❛ ...you  should  head  back. ❜  the  words  came  more  from  habit  than  intent.  ❛ i've  already  occupied  enough  of  your  time. ❜  his  eyes  remained  fixed  on  the  horizon,  as  though  the  conversation  might  end  there.  instead  —  'i'm  not  gonna  leave  your  side.'  silence.  the  keeper  didn't  answer  immediately.  in  fact,  he  was  a  little  taken  aback  by  that  respone.  old  instincts  urged  him  to  protest,  to  remind  the  endministrator  that  he  worked  best  alone,  that  danger  had  a  habit  of  finding  those  who  lingered  near  him.  the  words  already  lined  themselves  up  neatly  in  his  mind…  and  then  quietly  unraveled  again.

         a  faint  breath  escaped  him,  something  suspiciously  close  to  a  laugh,  though  far  softer  than  one.  ❛ ...you're  remarkably  stubborn. ❜  there  was  no  irritation  in  the  observation.  only  quiet  acceptance.  his  hand  drifted  absentmindedly  toward  the  pair  of  keys  resting  against  his  belt.  the  familiar,  weathered  one  brushed  lightly  against  the  newer  key,  their  soft  chime  carrying  through  the  evening  air.  ❛ i  spent  a  long  time  believing  solitude  made  people  safer. ❜  he  glanced  sideways,  eyes  gentler  than  usual.  ❛ you've  been  proving  me  wrong  time  and  time  again. ❜

         for  the  first  time  that  evening,  camille  turned  fully  toward  the  endministrator  instead  of  the  scenery  beyond.  ❛ alright. ❜  a  small  pause  followed.  ❛ if  you're  determined  to  stay... ❜  the  corners  of  his  mouth  lifted,  barely,  but  unmistakably.  in  a  hushed  voice,  he  added.  ❛ ...then  walk  with  me,  friend. ❜  without  waiting  for  an  answer,  he  started  walking  down  the  lantern-lit  path  at  an  unhurried  pace.  there  was  no  destination  in  mind,  no  investigation  awaiting  them  at  the  end  of  the  road.  just  the  rare  luxury  of  walking  beside  someone  whose  company  he  no  longer  felt  the  need  to  escape.
