We invite you to the finissage of the exhibition "Ръкотворно" (Handmade), this Saturday 30.05, between 16h and 20h, at Octopus gallery, Sofia.
On this occasion, we present the BBW POP-UP BASKET – a basket of limited editions that you can browse and purchase on site.
In the basket you will find our newest books: Hailstorms and Demons, The Bearded, Bulgaria 1985-1995, The Setlist Collection, as well as final copies of t-shirts and badges at good prices.
The gallery is located in the underpass of Sofia's Largo, between the Presidency and the Council of Ministers, under the stairs of Dondukov Boulevard.
𝗛𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗺𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘀: 𝗠𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗕𝗮𝗱 𝗪𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 documents a textile artwork by Rosie Eisor. The carpet was a central element in the interior of the exhibition PSEUDONATURE at the Bulgarian Pavilion, curated by Iassen Markov for the 19th Venice Architecture Biennale.
Made of tufted wool and measuring 270 x 480 cm, the work depicts three Hailstorms – malevolent demons from Balkan folklore, considered rulers of the natural forces. The idea of the carpet as part of the exhibition presents an allegory for the entangled relationship between humanity, artificial intelligence and nature.

Alice Barbé (@omnamonaraya) is a student at the ESA Académie des Beaux-Arts de Tournai (@actournai_esa) in visual and plastic arts, specializing in painting in the class of Laurence Dervaux and Priscilla Beccari.
This publication was developed as an internship project with Blood Becomes Water, with the aim to discover the world of self-publishing and artist books, as well as to create her very own first publication.

Two Blood Becomes Water books are part of PUK! PUK! Bulgarian PhotoBooks exhibition at The PhotoBookMuseum – a selection of 40 publications brought together by our friends from PUK!
The PhotoBookMuseum is one of the leading institutions dedicated to the photobook as a medium. Last year they brought the Dummy Award exhibition to Sofia, and now we're continuing the exchange. It means a lot to see Bulgarian photobooks – including ours – reach a wider international audience.
The exhibition is in THE BOX | The PhotoBookMuseum, Cologne, until June 13, with a pop-up stand where you can buy selected books.
The idea for this long-awaited “book soundtrack” mixtape dates back to 2022, when we contacted Ivaylo Tonchev (AON Productions) in relation to our latest publication, Bulgaria 1985-1995. He didn’t have the visual materials we were looking for, but he gave us references and permission to use some music from the compilations he had released: Greetings from Bulgaria, UZZU – No future 1988-1991, VA – Bulgarian Archives 1985-1990, Novi Tsvetya – Radiazia 1979-1995, and D.D.T. – We Are DDT-Punk Will Never Die!-1981-1991. So, here we are with the answers to your unasked questions and a lot of “basement recordings of the golden years of Bulgarian communism, when people were living in a giant concentration camp and while hundreds of punk bands from the West were selling out and turning to pop music, here in Bulgaria being a punk was a crime against society.”
What happens when the enemy disappears? This bilingual photobook is an archive of personal memories and “scattered evidence” of the young counterculture that emerged in Bulgaria in the late 1970s and 1980s. The greatest paradox occurred after 1989: a movement that had thrived on marginality was temporarily brought into the mainstream to serve as a symbol of the society it had resisted. A document of a decade of change in which rebellion against the monolithic state turns into a rejection of the new reality as well.

“The Bearded” is a limited edition book, developed as a collaboration project between Blood Becomes Water and Imaginary Archive by Tihomir Stoyanov. Through an extensive collection of photographs, the book explores the image of Dyado Mraz from the 1950s to his gradual disappearance after 1989.
Dyado Mraz (Grandfather Frost) and Santa Claus are two almost identical figures from the far North, but whose cultural journeys in Bulgaria are extremely different. The book captures Dyado Mraz’ school visits and the “exciting” moment of handing out gifts to children during the communist rule in Bulgaria. A brief accompanying text suggests the figure’s centuries-old roots, tracing the “good old man” from ancient mythology, Elin Pelin’s writings and Christian charity up until the moment the regime seized the country, leading to the outright banning of Christmas and the compulsory imposition of Dyado Mraz as the sole, ideologically “correct” figure.

Както може би знаете, Дядо Мраз и Дядо Коледа са два почти идентични образа от далечния север, но чиито културни пътешествия в България са изключително различни. Книгата улавя училищните посещения на Дядо Мраз и „вълнуващия“ момент на раздаването на подаръци на децата през годините на комунистическият режим. Кратък придружаващ текст подсказва неговите вековни корени, проследявайки „добрия старец“ от древната митология, разказите на Елин Пелин и християнската благотворителност до момента, в който режимът завзема страната, което води до пълната забрана на Коледа и задължителното налагане на Дядо Мраз като единствената, идеологически „правилна“ фигура.

Our participation was made possible by the Mobility Programme of the National Culture Fund of Bulgaria.
The "Medium Wave 352.9 Metres" is an abridged, prototype photobook of which only five copies exist. It relates to the golden age of Radio Sofia, featuring photographs of the interior of its then-new building (1942). The book also includes several pages from an annual meeting report, documenting the work of the sound-recording team.
