In a sense love is magic, for it embodies and evokes miraculous qualities stronger than anything else on this earth. It comes as no surprise to learn that, in Hawai'i, magic can be used to direct love to a person. To understand Hawaiian love magic we need to go back to Dr. Bringham's definition of the three things necessary to make magic effective: consciousness, force, and substance. Truth love is like a bird that needs to be snared. To one who has learned self-control, as opposed to controlling others, this does not seem too difficult an undertaking. The most important factor in this pursuit is controlling our thoughts, because thoughts go into the aka and attract substance. The word for thought is mana'o. We know the word mana already, and o in this context means "there." So when you think a thought, "there is a mana." Our thoughts attract other bodies to us. As we go through the process of mental-emotional self-discovery and the psychospiritual growth that follows it, we often find ourselves repeating self-destructive habits. Making poor choices, mistakes and following fruitless directions in life may be a necessary part of the psychospiritual growth process. Still, why is it that despite realizing that certain habitual choices are repeatedly bringing us to the same pitfalls, we continue those habits? Why is it that even with a desire to move efficiently along our journey through life, there is a sense that we are working against ourselves? Of course there is no single answer to this, as each person is unique in his or her challenges . But there is one archetypal challenge that plays a major role: fear.
