100 Days of Kinetic Sketches

Day 99: Not a Can Opener.  Concealed cabinet hinge and binding posts.  This one is kind of fun to play with, but I don’t think it translates too well on camera.

Day 98: Wind Wheel.  Custom milled aluminum, axel, bushings, vice, and canned air.  Milled the wind wheel on the Othermill, not a very efficient design.  Still needs work.

Day 97: Bunch of Cams.  Cam mechanism from ink jet printer, 9 volt, and battery connector.  A lot of good things hiding in a printer, take one apart whenever you can.

Day 96: Ball Joint Linkage.  Ball joint rod ends, rods, and nuts.  I incorrectly purchased these ball joint rod ends years ago, and I still don’t have a good use for them.

Day 95: Janky Rod Puppet.  Plastic cup, tape, rods, bamboo skewer, cable holders, screws, nuts, heat shrink, hub, and engraving plates.  Pretty weak rod puppet, I’m recreating a puppet mechanism I saw from memory.  I think I’m not remembering it correctly.

Day 94: Vibrating Motor and Haptic Controller.  Arduino, breadboard, haptic controller board, vibrating motor, cup, computer, and water.  Had this little board on my desk for months, finally got around to playing with it.  Hope there is more to come with it.  https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-drv2605-haptic-controller-breakout/overview

Day 93: Torggler Door.  Playing cards, cardboard, nails, and tape.  I based the design off of this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ipx3HfH76F8.  If you haven’t seen thang010146’s animated mechanisms on YouTube, do yourself a favor and check them out.

Day 92: Sleeping Machine.  Laser cut acrylic, geared DC motor, 9 Volt, wires, screws, and nuts.  I’ve been into making these crank mechanisms lately and I wanted to use this geared DC motor I had lying around.

Day 91: Worm Gear Gearbox.  Worm gear, spur gear, axels, bushings, aluminum beam, and tape.  A kit from Actobotics, a well made, compact design.

Day 90: Ratchet Wheel.  Ratchet wrench, gear, axel, hub, wheel, and aluminum beam.  Whenever you need a ratcheting mechanism, it’s hard to beat an actual ratchet.

Day 89: Lathe Base.  Custom milled Delrin, bolts, and lathe.  I’ve been meaning to make custom jigs for my lathe for a long time now.  Almost all of my designs will be built upon a base, similar to this, that slides on the lathe bed.

Day 88: Tentacle Test.  Spring, pattern mounts, and string.  I saw a very interesting machine with mechanical tentacles today, and it got me thinking, 

Day 87: Working Wing.  Pan/tilt servos, 80-20 extrusions, rod, various hardware, screws, and nuts.  Two wing assemblies have been mounted and got to test the servos with my test rig from a couple of days back.

Day 86: One Wing Flapping.  Pan/tilt servos, 80-20 extrusions, rod, various hardware, screws, and nuts.  I’ve been repurposing an old animatronic project, old robot arms will hopefully become bird wings.  Here is a one wing test for a potential kinetic piece. 

Day 85: Day 85: Analog Servo Control Cleaned Up.  Servo, perfboard, 555 timer, batteries, various wires and electrical components.  Found this circuit on MAKE: (http://makezine.com/projects/control-a-servo-motor-without-programming/) to control a servo with an analog circuit.  I cleaned it up and plan to use it as a servo test rig for future projects.

Day 84: Analog Servo Control.  Servo, breadboard, 555 timer, batteries, various wires and electrical components.  Found this circuit on MAKE: to control a servo with an analog circuit.  I’d like to clean it up and use it as a servo test rig in the future.
