As she clung to him with the despair of a drowning woman to a piece of driftwood, his chest vibrated with the hum of his voice. He put one arm around her, her body moving with him as he threw more wood into the fire. The flames grew quickly. Soon, they were bright enough so she could make out his sorrowful gaze.
“Don’t be scared.”Â
She nodded, even though her heart still hammered in her chest.
“You’re safe. You’re home.” His slow signs melted into gentle caresses, but neither managed to dispel her terror. “I’m here. I won’t leave you.”

She was so cold. He wrapped the blanket back around her shoulders before he took a small piece of cloth and dabbed at the wound on her cheek.
“Ungrateful little shit,” he signed as he put the cloth back into the bowl.
She ducked deeper into her blanket. He watched her, unsure what to make of it.
“Repeat?” she asked.
Something was wrong. Something he had said or done or hadn’t done. He gestured at his own face.
“Your cheek. The chicken got you. It didn’t know you wanted to help.” He let his hand sink. “Thank you. For that.”

He had promised to protect her. To save her, always. That as long as he was alive, no one would hurt her again. As pain filled her every breath, every heartbeat, she had to accept that he wasn’t coming for her. That he had died out there, and she was going to die in here.
Another shiver had her bite down on her knuckle to keep her teeth from chattering, releasing another drop of blood that didn’t even reach her throat. When the darkness crawled into her, she wished it would finally take her away so she could join him.

Everything in him screamed to get up and save her, but he couldn’t save her if he was dead, and her husband had left no doubt that he would kill him if he so much as looked at him wrong.
Stay down, or the next one will go between your eyes.
So he stayed down. He stayed down through her terrified cries, and he stayed down through the sound of her husband hitting her, and he stayed down until the last hoofbeat had faded, and only when he was absolutely certain that he was alone did he dare to stir.

When the pale light of morning crept through the curtains, his tears had long dried up. His eyes hurt. His legs hurt. Everything hurt. She would have scolded him for sitting like this before offering him her hand to help him up. The thought was enough to make him sob again, pressing his forehead against the mattress.
He would never hear her voice again. Never feel her touch again. She was gone and cold and alone, and he was still here and cold and alone, and he didn’t know how he was ever going to do anything but cry again.

With trembling hands, she watched as the piece of bread hit the wall and fell to the ground, snatching it so quickly, she bruised her shoulder on the metal bars. She didn’t bother cleaning it before she shoved it into her mouth.
Months ago, the taste of blood or the texture of sand would have made her sick. It was a luxury she could no longer afford. She swallowed without chewing, without tasting, without acknowledging the pressure building in her throat. It had to be his blood, and this thought was almost enough to make her throw up after all.
