Reminiscence || Adrian & Nadia
When she was finally finished with her story, Adrianâs gaze dropped to the floor. Her sentences kept on repeating themselves in his head even though she was not speaking anymore. He could not help but slowly construct them into images. All these times, he had always thought that Nadia was one of the few lucky people there at the Base to still have her family whole. She had both her parents and the three of them had each other. Surely she could not possibly be familiar with the loss that he had had to go through.
But she wasâand now he knew. Adrian leaned back against the wall as the even progressed. Every so often he would tune his attention back to anyone who was speaking, but after a while his thoughts would always wander off. His mind carried him to memories of his mother, of home, of what it could feel like to lose a sibling. He wrapped himself in his own silence the whole time, and before he knew it, the story-telling was over.
The people started gathering in smaller groups, talking amongst themselves with warm smiles stretching their lips and fresh tears moistening their cheeks. While taking the surrounding in, he felt a tap on his shoulder. Adrian smiled at his friend and stood up. âGreat job,â he told Nadia, sincerety marking his voice. For a moment he forgot about the protesting that he had planned to do once the event was over. âYou never⌠mentioned you had a brother.â His words came out hesitant.
Adrian was curious, but did not think it wise to ask questions after her heartfelt revelation to pretty much the whole Base. Organising the gathering had got to be difficult enough, but to speak first took immense courage. He certainly would not have been able to do it. He admired her for that, and though he could not put it into words, he hoped his expression could convey it.
She didnât really know how it came to be so, but Nadia realized that she actually really valued Adrianâs opinions. As she had once said before, he was smarter than most fifteen year old boys she knewânot that she knew a lot of them. But he was definitely intelligent and mature for someone who was three years younger than her. Heck, he was probably even more mature than she was. She figured that growing up fast came with having to survive alone, though, and in terms of experiences, he was older than she was, in a sense. Nadia felt a pang of sadness when she realized that surviving along probably resulted in losing a part of his childhood, but nonetheless, she was glad that she had the honor to call someone like him a friend. His views were things that she very highly took into consideration.
Returning Adrianâs smile when he turned around to face her, she attempted on giving him a modest shrug of her shoulders. But the smile she wore was too wide to cover her pride of being able to pull off such an event. âThank you,â she said, beaming from ear to ear. Though as soon as Adrian brought up the topic of her brother, the smile slowly slipped from her face, until only a small and somewhat forced one remained. She inhaled deeply before regarding his comment. âWell, now you know that I had a brother,â Nadia responded in a soft voice. She knew that she shouldnât be surprised to have him bring this up, but considering that she had never truly spoken to him about all the sorts of misfortunes that they had experienced in the past, she didnât think that he would let their somewhat lighthearted friendship turned into a deeper one. Not that she was unhappy about it or anything, though. And besides, perhaps it was time for her to open up to him.
"Remember that first time we talked? When I walked down the hallway from the Bunk room and found you doing the same?" she went on, letting the words fly out of her mouth before she could stop them. "I told you that I had a nightmare. It was about my brother."
Reminiscence || Adrian & Nadia
After Adrian eventually slipped back to wherever he was hiding again, Nadia let the event take place. She decided that she was going to speak to the younger boy about whatever it was that they might need to speak about later on. Now, though, she gave her full attention toward what she planned on doing. It didnât take long before she finally opened her mouth and shared her own story before she and her parents stumbled upon the Base. Sometimes her mother or father would chime in and add details as she spoke. It was difficult to talk about what became of Lukas at first, but as the crowd began to murmur words of sympathy, it gradually got easier. By the time she was done, Nadia felt completely at ease sharing about what happened before the Base. She realized that people werenât out to get her and use the fact that Lukas was an Infected against her. Instead, they were willing to help her make it easier to bear with.
Nonetheless, she breathed out a sigh of relief once her story was over. Talking about it had lifted a huge weight off from her shoulders, but it was still nice to not have to watch the images whirl through her eyes now that she didnât have to talk anymore. Talking meant recounting, and sometimes just not remembering about it was better. As others shared stories around her, Nadia used the time to distract herself and wipe away the images of the stricken looks on the faces of her parents when they realized that something was terribly wrong. She tried to forget that dread that she always felt whenever she stumbled upon an Infectedâalways praying that it wasnât Lukas.
Once they were done with all the stories to share in a group, she told them to mingle and chat. Nadia had no more energy to lead the crowd. The night was getting late, and she was beginning to realize just how exhausting the eveningâs activity was. She wove through the crowd as people exchanged condolences and laughters here and there, until she saw the familiar sight of a dark-haired head. Adrian, she thought, making her way toward the boy once more. She wanted to know about what he thought of how the evening had went so far. She wondered if he had been listening to any of the stories, or if he was simply reminiscing about one of his own. She tapped his shoulder lightly once she read him.
When she was finally finished with her story, Adrian's gaze dropped to the floor.

While taking the surrounding in, he felt a tap on his shoulder. Adrian smiled at his friend and stood up. "Great job," he told Nadia, sincerety marking his voice. For a moment he forgot about the protesting that he had planned to do once the event was over. "You never... mentioned you had a brother." His words came out hesitant.
Adrian was curious, but did not think it wise to ask questions after her heartfelt revelation to pretty much the whole Base. Organising the gathering had got to be difficult enough, but to speak first took immense courage. He certainly would not have been able to do it. Adrian, cool name. And, ah, Mae. Mae Samson.
Nice meeting you, Mae. And thanks. Yours, too.
Reminiscence || Adrian & Nadia
She pulled Adrian to sit down beside her once the applause began to die down, ignoring him for a moment while she addressed the crowd. Nadia figured that sheâd deal with him soon enough, but now she had to make sure that this event was going to run smoothly. And of course, the first step to that was to have her audiencesâ attention. Now that she had them, she had to keep them interestedâwhich meant that she needed to start as soon as possible. Raising her hand to silence the crowd, she spoke, âTo be honest, I havenât really planned on what Iâm gonna do with tonight. I mean, I know for sure that Iâd be sharing some stories about my experiences before my family and I stumbled upon the Base, but Iâve got no rundown whatsoever. Iâm just gonna go with the flow.â
Looking around, she spotted people murmuring in agreement and nodding their heads. That was a good start. At least they werenât looking at her with scornful looks as if she was stupid just because she didnât have everything planned. It seemed like no one here had things planned either, so that was good. âBut Iâve decided that maybe I should start with my story, then ask for others to share. If you donât want to share yours, then itâs okay, but Iâd really appreciate it if I could get a couple of volunteers. When weâre done with that, then I guess we should all just mingle and talk to one another and learn new things about each other,â she went on. âHow does that sound?â Nadia glanced around the room, again meeting murmurs of agreement and nods. She exhaled a sigh of relief, though it was only after she met her parentsâ eyes and saw them looking at her with pride that she felt like she had done something great.Â
Turning to Adrian at last, she nudged him lightly, âThink that sounds good?â For a moment, Nadia contemplated on not letting him move back to his initial spotâwherever that was. It was nice to have him by her side like this, as it took away a little bit of the pressure of having to lead the event. Even though he wasnât exactly doing anything, just having someone else in the centre of the spotlight was letting her feel like she wasnât alone in this. But it really seemed like he wasnât enjoying this at all. And it wasnât fair for her to keep him around if that was the last thing that he wanted. Reluctantly, she nodded her head. âFine, you can go after this.â
As she pulled him down, Adrian gladly followed suit. It was relieving enough to be able to sit down. His gaze was fixed on his crossed legs throughout the time that Nadia spoke. But even though he did not look at the mass of people around him, he could tell from the murmurs that most of them responded well to her lead. And before he knew it, he also found himself nodding in agreement to her explanation. Nadia had everything in check as far as anyone was concerned.
The previous uneasiness began to slowly dissipate, seeing as he was no longer part of the crowd's main focus. His own focus began to shift, too, so it took him slightly by surprise when she personally directed the question to him. Adrian mouthed a "sure" with a firm nod of his head. It was as good an idea as any, as long as she would not make him tell his story right there and then.
Hearing her answer, he smiled and heaved in relief. He did not mind having to wait for a while before going back to his spot. Nobody would pay him any attention while Nadia was sharing anyway, which was how it was supposed to be.
He would also be lying if he said he was not curious of what Nadia had to say. In truth, even though they had known each other for a while, they still did not know much about each other's background. Life before the Base was not exactly a subject they had allowed to come up in any of their conversations. Sure, he would be able to hear her from his far corner, but he would certainly appreciate a clear view of his friend while she was talking. In a way, he also wanted to be there for her if she really was going to let these people know of her past.

Reminiscence || Adrian & Nadia
A grin slowly spread across her face as she finally caught sight of Adrian. Nadia beckoned him to join him at the centre of the circle, her grin only widening when she detected a hint of a strain in the smile that he wore on his own face. She could easily tell that he was definitely going to give her hell for making him have to creep out of his hiding spot and into the spotlight. While everyone else was busy applauding the younger boy when he took his place beside her, Nadia could faintly hear Adrianâs whisper over the noise of the applause.
She turned to face him with a triumphant look. âWhat? Canât I make sure that youâre acknowledged for helping me out organize this thing? I mean, I know that I came up with the idea in the first place, but in the end you kinda talked to a couple of people and spread the words, didnât you?â she said, shrugging her shoulders as if calling him and putting him in the centre of attention wasnât really a big deal.
She didnât understand why he was so against the idea of being recognized by others. Yes, she knew that Adrian preferred keeping to himself rather than going out there and socializing with everyone, but surely having people know his name wouldnât hurt, right? It wasnât like he had a bad reputation for anything. For all Nadia knew, there had never been any terrible things about Adrian being spread around.Â
Then again, she supposed that he didnât think the way she did. He seemed to be a hell lot more introverted than she was. Sometimes she still wondered how they could be such close friends. Sure, there was the fact that he also came from Indonesia, but that alone shouldnât be enough to make them remain friends for this long. They were so different. Maybe it was their differences that made her like him, though. It was nice to be friends with someone who could keep her down to earthâthe way Adrian did.
Realizing that she at least owed him an apology for making him do something that he didnât want to do, Nadia whispered again, âLook, Iâm sorry for making you do this. I know that you donât want to partake in this event as like the leader or anything, but Iâm not asking you to do that. I just want people to know that you helped me out. I thought that you deserved a little recognition.â
The frown on his face came naturally when Nadia gave him the look. She was obviously enjoying it. His best guess was that she had planned it all along to call him down there. "But I don't need this." Realising that his voice took on a slightly higher volume than he intended it to, he bit his tongue and looked down to his feet. The problem was definitely not resolvedânot yet. He would just have to discuss it with her later when they were no longer the centre of attention.
Hoping that his discomfort did not leak through his appearance, Adrian nodded to the applauding crowd. The thin smile was still plastered across his face. While still trying to act casual, he racked his brain for a way out of the situation, but could not think of any. In fact, he felt like he could not think at all. His brain seemed to have pathetically shut down there in the face of most of the Base inhabitants.
It certainly did not look like he could find an escape on his own. Unfortunately, his only hope was the person that had put him in the inconvenient position in the first place. "I have all the recognition I need," he muttered sullenly. He then turned slightly to the side to glance at Nadia. His expression turned from that of feigned gratitude to dismissal and finally to pleading. "Well then, can I go back now?" He shoved his hands into his pockets, feeling the wetness of sweat beginning to form on his palms.
Even though he knew that she probably meant well, he did not believe it to be necessary. He was not even sure if he would actually take part in the gathering, let alone claiming recognition for it. The whole thing had been Nadia's idea and Nadia's alone. All he did was talk to a number of people about it. And right this moment, all he wanted was to crawl back to his own little corner at the far end of the room.
Yeah, I guess we arenâtâŚ
What was your name again?
Adrian. Blake. Andâer, you?
At least youâre trying, that counts as something, right? Look at you being all smiley now.
If you say so, Nadia. If you say so.
Who, me? Iâm not old. I guess Iâm pretty young too. I just turned 19.
Exactly. So we're not so different, right? Well, we're different by four years, but you get the point.

Reminiscence || Adrian & Nadia
Admittedly, Nadia had been searching for Adrianâwhom she considered as her partner in crime in terms of creating this gatheringâall night, but he was nowhere to be seen. Or at least, she hadnât seen him yet. Not that she was really surprised that he wasnât at the centre of the event. Knowing Adrian, he was probably off searching for a quieter spot somewhere. Despite the fact that she was giving him half the credit of helping her with organizing the gathering, it didnât seem like he wanted to be acknowledged for it. And she respected that. But Nadia couldnât help but wish that her younger friend would at least let her tell people that he was the guy who she had shared the initial idea with. It would be a bit much to wish that he would appear by her side as she initiated the start of this gathering, but at least she wanted to make sure that people knew that he deserved some credits too.
While people formed some sort of a circle in the Bunk room, Nadia found her way to the centre of the circle, knowing that she was going to have to start things off. Even while she mentally prepared some sort of opening speech, her eyes still searched the room for the sight of Adrian. No glimpses of his dark hair to be spotted, though. She knew that he was bound to be here somewhere, but he probably preferred hiding in the shadows and listening to her everyone else do all the talking. After her eyes swept around the room and she still couldnât locate him, Nadia eventually gave up looking.
Exhaling a long sigh, the girl then clapped her hands together once. It seemed to be an effective way to gain the attention of others. Once people where looking in her direction and the chattering had stopped, she said, âOkay, as some of you may know already, I was the one who initiated the idea of this gathering. I wanted a night where we could all just share our experiences and perhaps learn from one another. Plus, it wouldnât hurt to make a few friends tonight, right? I know that some of you here think that itâs cool for me to come up with an idea like this, but I feel like I should give credits to a certain someone who had helped me develop the idea in its early stages.â The words came tumbling out of her mouth before she could truly filter them. Adrian was bound to complain for what she was doing. But sheâd deal with him later. âSo shoutout to Adrian Blake for helping me with this! Adrian, if youâre around here somewhere, would you please make your way to the centre of the circle so that people can see who you are?â
His eyes continued to scan the room until he found a familiar figure making her way to the very centre of the crowd. Nadia. It seemed that she was ready to lead the gathering to a start. Adrian adjusted himself on ther floor, turning to face where she was standing, as it was undoubtedly where the main event would be.
Strangely enough, Nadia did not say anything for a while. She only stood there, her eyes darting from one end of the room to another. It looked as if she was searching for something. Adrian did not have a single idea of what she could be looking for. Perhaps a prop to help her with some kind of a demonstration? What could she possibly need to start a gathering of this sort? If she had mentioned it to him earlier, he would surely help her find it, but seeing as he did not have a clue...
A single, loud clap later, everyone was facing Nadia the way he was, and the noise died down as she spoke. Well done, Nadia, he thought. They acknowledge you. This thing you've assembled is going to run just fine, I can tell. Adrian smiled at her, though her gaze was evidently not on him.
The smile on his face lingered until he heard her say his name. The crowd was completely quiet by then, waiting in anticipation for what was about to happen. Waiting in anticipation for him. That was when he realised that what she had tried to find earlier was not an object, but him. Adrian swallowed. What in the world was Nadia thinking? Several heads turned his way. Shit, he swore to himself. He was surely doomed.
Adrian had no choice. He slowly got up and stepped towards the centre of the room. All eyes were on him and all he wished for was to shrink and turn to dust. Unfortunately, it was deemed impossible by every scientific law ever discovered, so instead he only stood by Nadia with a strained smile on his face.
"Why?" he whispered out of the corner of his mouth so only she could hear him. "Why are you doing this?"
Reminiscence || Adrian & Nadia
It was strange to see so many people gathered together while it was not meal time. Usually it only happened when the officials had something to announce, but not this particular occasion. In fact, this gathering was proposed by one person alone, and she certainly was not an official. Adrian smiled at what the simple idea had blossomed into. There was no denying; Nadia had done well.
He sat down on the floor at the corner of the bunk room, his back against the wall, watching the people chatting in several small groups. It was pleasant to see so many genuine smiles all around. The event was sparking up the usually dull Base and it seemed that it was exactly what the people needed. Like a breath of fresh air, they really took the time in and put it to good use.
His own little corner was quiet though, which he did not mind. The truth was, though he had helped spread the news, Adrian was not sure if he would actually participate. Gathering of any kind was never something that he liked. This one had even more pressure to it because it required the participants to share about the life he still often found himself trying to forget.
But he had no problem with watching it from a distant--and so he did. After all, the amiable air was circulating through even those who chose to sit out.

Good to know. But fifteenâs still pretty young.
Maybe, but you don't strike me as an old lady either.
Iâve been told that winning an argument against me isnât easy, so thereâs that.
Good, you try do that. I bet some people would listen. Trust me on this one.

Send me a ⼠for one thing my muse likes about yours.
The fact that Nadia can be confident, bold, and vibrant, but also understanding, friendly, and calm at the same time is the reason why he deems her a genuinely good person and a genuinely good friend.
I guess youâre rightâŚThanks.
I just meant that I didnât expect to be telling you all my problems. And you look really young, but yet you have such a level head about everything. It was a compliment.
So I've been told. But I don't, really, I just don't see how putting my foot out could lead to any good. Thanks, I guess? Oh andâfor the sake of informationâI'm fifteen. Not twelve. Or ten. Or any younger.
