Continuing with #thetestcomic issue 40. This page is something of an extra interior title page. While I see “Help Me to Enter Your World” as the title (see yesterday’s post), I have usually worked in my take on the relevant letter’s page logo into each issue. This logo is a bit of a combo of the letter page logo with the “stacked” logo of the “Machine Man” comic. The image is an outlier for this issue but connects to some other issues in the series in terms of process. This is the only issue that I sketched out in advance. (The Sun Ra “Space Is the Place” issue is the next most pre-planned but that comes from following elements of the film.) For this issue, only the cover and this image came from drawing freely and then going back to select and collage bits together. The wonderful quotation from N. Katherine Hayles has a story to it. While I have intended to make “Thousand Oaks” for many years, the form it has taken is a synthesis of longstanding ideas and the process of making it an actual thing, following a monthly schedule and being open to the things that are happening outside of intention. Issue 33 for example owes the presence of #norvalmorrisseau to the first walk I took in 2021 during which I felt I could drop into a public library and there was a book on the artist at the Coxwell-Danforth branch. In this case, I made this sketch partly while thinking about Machine Man but also thinking about some wonderful essays by Andy Brown in his zine “3 Essays on Late-Career Kirby”. One of these essays included the quotation from Hayles which I recorded in my sketchbook when making this drawing and then decided to include here when assembling the issue. It did later come into play as I thought about text to bring the issue and the series to its conclusion.
