An Important Lesson I’ve Learned from Star Wars

I had to chose one, it would be this.  Whenever life got me down I would watch the original trilogy, and it just made the world make sense again.  I lost my mom when I was 20 and this event sent me into a dark place.  I became a selfish person devoid of emotion.  I blew off all my friends, my girlfriend at the time and anyone else who was close to me.  I did not want anyone else near me that I could lose.  I stayed this way for about a year.  I was aware of my behavior and hated it but felt powerless to stop. 

I had not watched the Star Wars movies at all during that time, so I decided that I was going to do that.  I cleared a day and popped in my VHS copies of the movies and watched them like I never had before.  Luke was always the character I identified the most with, but for the first time I truly understood the dark side of the force.  And that I had succumbed to the real life version of it. 

I let fear and anger make the decisions in my life for the year since my mom passed.  And watching Darth Vader, the ultimate villain redeem himself but doing what was hard, by allowing himself to feel and strive to do what was right, not what was easy or safe struck a cord with me like it never had before. 

Living a positive and happy life wasn't easy, but the choices made in it's path did make life enjoyable and full of value.   It allowed me to decide I was going to live my life in a way that my mom would be proud of.  And I gain my personal self respect back. Life isn't easy.  And it is definitely unfair.  The original trilogy may be just movies, but they are also a simplistic guide on choosing how to live your life.  In my darkest hour, I turned to my greatest passion to help.  And the Dark Lord of the Sith showed me the way.

How Star Wars has Affected My Everyday Life

I tend to see Star Wars as a road map.  Be it tough decisions, hardships, how to be humble or how to strive for excellence.  And above all else I believe in drawing energy from the life around me.  I cannot manipulate it or anything, but it gives me strength

The Most Important Person I’ve bonded with over Star Wars

When I was 21 a lot had gone bad in my life.  I had recently lost my mother.  I had no idea how I was going to pay for school and I felt lost.  I had just come off the worse year of my life and I needed to heal.  And it was through a mutual love of Star Wars (and well Magic: The Gathering) I met my buddy Grant.

Grant is the only person in my life to this point I had met that loved Star Wars as much as I did.  We watched the movies a lot together in those first few months I knew him.  I felt like watching these movies was healing me.  When I was at my lowest financially I had a $30 a month food budget, and though Grant had very little money himself he would buy me food and provided shelter in his spare bedroom. 

If not for Grant I am not sure how long it would have taken me to heal.  I am not sure how I would have survived.  He had so little and yet he still...

There is no one like him in my life.  One of a kind.

Best Moment from the New Canon

I was really lucky to be on Catrina Dennis’ podcast about the new Star Wars comics  Mos Eisley Underground a couple times and one was when they released the Star Wars #8. 

***SPOILER ALERT***

So in this comic we catch up with Han, Leia and Sana.  Sana is a nefarious type who pretty much comes down to the surface of a planet Han and Leia are hiding out on, tells Leia that she is married to Han and more or less sells them out to the imps.  The whole time Han is trying to tell Leia that are not married, but Sana seems to know Han’s game and spills it out.  Anyway the whole time Han is trying to be on team Leia, Leia seems done with both of them and when Han turns his back to Leia she kicks him in the ass towards Sana.

Background Character that Needs more Love

Wedge.  For the same reasons I found him my possible BFF, I would like to see more on how this hot shot pilot with a sense of wonder came to be.  They flesh him our pretty well in the Legends universe, but I want to see some official canon on him.  I want to know how he became so good.

C’mon it’s R2.  Perhaps BB-8 will give him a run for his money, but it’s R2.  With being said, let’s list as many other droids I can think of, for hipster reasons
