I was, like, a total cliched ‘80s child. I had Barbies, obviously, as well as My Little Ponies and Cabbage Patch Kids, but I used to destroy them. I used to draw all over their faces and cut off their hair.

can I adopt all of them?

Malek’s eyes do a lot of the work on Mr. Robot. I ask him if he’s aware of how crazy they can look. “I never think about it. I just try to experience things, and when I get riled up, I know they do involuntary things or get very menacing,” he says. “Even my mom says, ‘You don’t look like my son anymore!’ It’s like they say: The eyes are windows to the soul… I just said that in a GQ interview. Oh fuck.”

You get yourself so good at losing. I really hoped that I might win the Oscar that year [2009, for The Reader], and I bloody did. I remember absolutely all of it. I should, of course, say the birth of my children, so let’s just say that I’ve said that, but it was the most glorious, fist-pumping, high-five, triumphant, all-consuming moment of my entire life. It was fucking amazing. It’s the biggest prize going, I won it, and it felt incredible. I’m not going to downplay it one bit.

“Friend”? What is “friend”? Um, a friend is someone that you’d do anything for. You lend them your cool stuff, like comic books and trading cards. And they never break a promise.
