Today, a plaque commemorates the historic Ink Well beach in Santa Monica, where Black residents of Los Angeles came to enjoy their small share of sun, sand and fun in segregated America.
The plaque also briefly notes the contributions of Nick GabaldĂłn, the legendary Southland surfer of African-American and Mexican descent.

Popular culture has long portrayed surfing as a sort of reservoir of bohemian, along with a large helping of agro-masculinity and whiteness. Yet, if one traces its origins you find a much more complicated story.
The whitewashed and little known history of California’s Black surf pioneers.Â
The 2012 documentary film directed by Richard Yelland explores the brief and remarkable life of Nick GabaldĂłn, the quintessential Black southern California surfer who was killed while practicing his craft.
The film’s title refers to the distance GabaldĂłn paddled from the Ink Well, the LA beach frequented by Black Angelenos - to Malibu - in an effort to compete against many of the world-class white surfers who held court there.Â
It is a testament to Gabaldón’s character and skill that he was not only able to carve out a space for himself among white surfers, but actually win their respect and admiration in the segregated reality of 1950s America.
Nick GabaldĂłn, the surfer of African-American and Mexican descent, was a pioneer of southern California surf culture and a fixture at the Ink Well, the stretch of Santa Monica Beach frequented by Black surfers. African-Americans reclaimed the derogatory name given to the beach by white Angelenos, wearing it as a badge of pride.

“Black people don’t surf!”  Don’t be fooled. Surfing was practiced by people of color long before it became considered a “white” activity. Â
A documentary film directed by Ted Woods, Whitewash explores the origins of surfing in America, and the non-white surfers who introduced the sport to a white audience who later appropriated it - to the exclusion of the very Black and Brown people who first brought it to their attention.Â
This pattern is very much in keeping with the longstanding American tradition of erasing the contributions of Black and Brown people in popular culture.
