Cities for women and girls
I am excited to be participating as a moderator at the Urban Economic Forum’s virtual event, “North America, Women, and Urban Sustainable Development Goals: A Shift Towards Gender Equality,” on March 7th and 8th. The event will involve discussions on how to empower women to play a greater role in urban planning and design, while also addressing the needs of women and girls in cities.
Urban planning, engineering, and design have traditionally been male-dominated fields. This is reflected in how often cities don’t adequately meet the needs of women and children. For example, affordable housing that doesn’t include three bedroom units, neighbourhoods unsafe for women to walk at night, streets with no sidewalks or sufficient crosswalks for women to comfortably walk with their children.
According to the Women Friendly Cities United Nations Joint Programme, woman friendly cities are cities where women:
- Can access health, education and social services. - Can access employment opportunities. - Can access high quality and comprehensive urban services (such as transportation, accommodation and security). - Can access mechanisms that will guarantee their rights in the event they are subjected to violence.
They are cities where local governments take into account women’s issues and perspectives in their planning and decision-making processes. And, women are supported and encouraged to participate in all areas of urban life on an equal basis with men.
I look forward to moderating some engaging conversations on these issues in a few weeks!
THIS IS WHAT I MEAN WHEN I SAY TREES ARE COOL

Jai Raphael's "Abyss."
Currently on view until February 20th, 2022 at Beinart Gallery in Melbourne, Australia is artist Jai Raphael's solo exhibition, "Abyss."
Jai Raphael is a self-taught artist, predominantly learning through trial and error. In 2013 he began painting with close friend and artist Fergus Dupleix, and this was Raphael’s first step of a journey to pursue painting with a view towards one day exhibiting his works. Dupleix was an integral figure in Raphael’s development and helped to open the door for his first group exhibition.
"As from the chrysalis to the emergence of the moth" explains Jai, "through the process of evolution, so, too, are these entities revealed within states of transmutation into a higher being.
The connectivity of body and soul are illuminated through an amalgamation of the flesh with vegetative, tenebrous roots. The beings depicted reside in a shadow landscape of sepulchral realms. Inspired by hallucinatory explorations, these paintings are musings into dark recesses of the unconscious and evolution through strife and grief."

'Purple Shit'
The Long View,
The true—and vast—complexity of the universe was captured in this vista recorded by a pair of automated telescopes, one in the U.S. and one in the Chilean desert. From our little perch inside the Milky Way, the image shows the universe stretching out for about a billion light years, which is only a small fraction of its total size. Each of the 50,000 dots represents an entire galaxy. The Earth, once believed to sit at the center of it all, is in truth a cosmic afterthought.
