okay so one of my many hot takes is that its more ableist to depict a disabled character with a different disability than it is to depict them with no disability at all.
I mainly have this greviance with the Hermitcraft fandom and how many fanartists depict Scar, a guy who in real life is disabled and in a wheelchair. lots of fanart depict him with no disability aids at all, which to be fair the man himself has said he doesn't really mind or care about that, plus you at least have the excuse that in the game of Minecraft wheelchairs dont exist, everyone is capable of the exact same movements of walking, sprinting, jumping, etc.
but then theres lots of fanartists who draw him either with a cane or arm crutches. and it just pisses me off a bit. a lot, actually. why are we taking a disabled man and giving him what is, in my opinion as a disabled person, a less complicated, more aesthetically pleasing, and overall a considered more "normal" disability aid? why can you not take the take to draw a wheelchair? it feels like they're going "I recognise this is a disabled person! Im not one of those artists that erase his disability, see, I'm drawing him disabled! but wheelchairs are just sooooo hard, so I'm just gonna give him a cane cause its easier! but hes still disabled, see, Im sooooo much better than all those other artists".
it makes sense if theyre drawing one of his specific characters that does in fact use a cane in-lore, like one of his current charcters, but people just draw any and every version of him with a cane or arm crutches.
I also absolutely never see fanart that gives him his oxygen tubes either, unless its specifically fanart of the Actual Real Life Guy.
it just feels like such blatant disability erasure and yet no one else seems to agree with me on this...
oh dudeee i so get it I was in a fandom for a short while where one of the protagonists was a wheelchair user and so many people would just draw him standing anyway (or even worse just sitting on the floor)
here is a dumb jank tutorial for anyone who is scared to draw a wheelchair user bc they cant draw wheelchairs. theyre not as hard as they look
(obv if you wanna go super into it you can look into specific models and use refs but this is like. You just need something thats passably correct enough)
