the silence without the soft thrumming of the halo is deafening. the coldness of the sheets burns the skin. neither of them sleep that night

the second night isn’t any easier. there’s noises they don’t recognise anymore, and noises they didn’t think they’d miss. there’s no dripping tap. no faint singing of drunken strangers staggering home. no rain pattering against the window. no rustling of sheets from another body in the bed. it’s quiet….and it’s lonely

the third night ava stops outside beatrice’s room. open the door. open the door. open the door. but the coldness of the handle snaps ava back to her senses. beatrice lets out a shaky breath as the shadow under the door starts to retreat, and disappears

the fourth night, beatrice lights the fire, but the crackles and pops don’t sound right. doesn’t sound like her. ava takes extra pillows, camila doesn’t need that many anyway, but they won’t mould into the right shape. doesn’t feel like her. they bump into each other on the way to the bathroom. beatrice doesn’t offer. ava doesn’t ask. they retreat to their rooms in silence afterward
