Wait so I don't just complain and leave for another month, I'll complain, make a recommendation and then leave.
Lately I've been reading through Elizabeth A. Lynn's works and they're more or less what I imagined modern fantasy would look like when I was a kid - queer characters where them being queer isn't even remarked upon or seen as interesting in the slightest. A lot of standard western fantasy trope stories but with less misogyny. Turns out what I wanted was actually being written in the 80s, go figure.
She also wrote one novel that stands apart from her other works in being (1) sci-fi and (2) exploring a sci-fi world's version of slavery in that mixture of actually addressing complex characters' views on it and also absolutely romanticizing parts of it that I adore from darker themed stories and find so rarely, but more on that one later.
