because homelander is a powerful supe with laser eyes who can punch through people in a second, but he decided to strangle doppelgänger to death, relatively slowly for his level of power, while staring in his eyes. homelander's own eyes. strangulation is what people define as the most intimate form of murder, as opposed to shootings, lasers, etc. that are pretty impersonal. there are certain murders that indicates if the suspect was a loved one or not based on how they carried it out.

that "you're pathetic" came from such a deep place of self hatred and loneliness. this is the extremes of just how much he hates himself for wanting love, and being unable to get rid of that desire. a 'version' of him verbalising want he wants so plainly and openly as if it's as light and simple as that, teetering on the edge of making fun of it. doppelgänger didn't know the negative weight of his desires. (probably just thought he was like every attractive famous person who gets off on their own appearance because they are confident in themselves)

he wants love because it’s painful without it, not because it’d make him ‘look’ powerful. because, he does already look powerful, he's got that. this is about easing the pain inside himself, it’s not driven by ego. it’s the opposite really, he uses the gains of power and popularity to try quench his thirst for love and it never happens. none of the people cheering for him fill that void in his chest, because his brain just cannot absorb love that way due to the trauma and conditioning they put him through.
