I’m Not Going To Apologize For Watching TharnType
Ever since I posted about TharnType, my msgs & anons about it have been.. interesting. Some people just want to chat about the series, others want me to know how “toxic” Type is, or how “naive” Tharn is, & some want me to know that it’s “inappropriate” for us to watch.
Going from Skam to TharnType is definitely a switch in representation- as far as content goes, but is somewhat similar in its overall context.
So I just want to address the 3 main anons/msgs that I’m still getting, over & over again:
Type is toxic
Type’s thoughts, feelings, & actions do not match up. He is a victim of abuse that is still so deeply affected by it, he’s managed to hurt himself, his boyfriend, & his best friend in the process– because he associates his abuse with gay men, instead of predatory men. But, just because we understand Type’s behavior, doesn’t mean we always have to agree with it. I’ve worked with many “Type’s” in therapy. Type is a very, very real portrayal of what internalized homophobia looks like in some men that are gay (or attracted to a man) but don’t dare say it or act on it because they were abused as children by men & they can’t differentiate between the two.
Tharn is naive because he fell in love with a straight guy
Type isn’t straight, & he’s still figuring all of that out. Also, like most young teens, Tharn is not perfect. He’s also still deeply affected by his previous relationship.. so much so, that he wants the word “break-up” to be removed from the dictionary.
TharnType is inappropriate to watch
This one I’ve previously answered in detail. Please read it if you’d like to know why I’m watching/discussing it with my LGBTQ+ Teen Group. In my opinion, there’s nothing more inappropriate than censorship of important issues being brought to our attention in this series.
What I’m not going to do is apologize for continuing to watch the series. We’ve had so many important discussions that we wouldn’t have had without it. Anyway, I hope this post covers everything.
