Euripides, tr. by Anne Carson, Grief Lessons: Four Plays by Euripides
Opera of the Daffodils at Spelltree Theatre
Oh! what a wondrous, wondrous thing it is! To have a thousand open faces smile at you, weeping with dew, and to smile back, teary-eyed and moved, driven from sleep to the barbaric birdsong of untranslatable and untamed, loud, harsh and glorious cries. YAWP! The rattling claps of thrashing wings applaud.
Yes, “all the Heavens were a Bell, and Being, but an Ear.” Some strange Opera.
my grandmother has instilled in me an urge to pray at night which i return to with desperation at my deepest sorrows. “I need some older, wiser being to cry to. I talk to God, but the sky is empty.”
Girl, aging girl, is haunted by own nothingness and devours views from windows (stories, movies, overheard talk and sights in the street, pictures in newspapers, etc.) with continuous feeling she is 'just about', miraculously, to come into her own her own life.

i miss my father. in a quite simple, desperately childish way. i miss him with a guilt so vivid it cries of blood. and still i will not forgive him, nor he me. such is family. we go on wanting.

i think it is funny, that romance is seen as such an unintellectual and superficial thing to write about. because it is so fundamental to us. to want to love and be loved. if you don't think every great work of literature. philosophy. metaphysics. was ultimately about romance. i don't think you were paying enough attention.
i seclude myself habitually. i am dutiful to my solitude. i fear loneliness is all i’m capable of. like a nun god doesn’t believe in; like a rabid dog: an unholy beast.
wringing my hands, tears streaming down my face, eyes swollen, nose running, breath unsteady, laboured: “i never did anything deeply unforgivable and i am not fundamentally evil and i am loved on this earth.”

the unforgivable devotion of a dog, misbehaving. sad eyes glistening above a slobbering mouth, a whine that speaks ineffable pain. in all this yearning, in all this longing, who will want for me?
When Adam bit the apple he did it because he trusted Eve. Because he loved her. Adam bit into the apple because the woman he loved told him to, no matter what God said. No matter the rules of heaven. What’s heaven to a woman’s love anyway? What’s God to your wife? The first sins of humanity, were trusting others. Eve trusted a snake, Adam trusted Eve, and I trust you. Maybe that’s a sin, just like the first couple. Maybe everyone’s right about us and we’re sinners and we offend God. But like I said, what’s God to a woman’s love anyway? What has heaven got that I can’t find sitting next to you on a cool autumn morning?

she’s a sharp spring of stinging cold light i step into, waist deep, wading in spilled love.
this tender depth of feeling is ripe and raw like split knuckles weeping blood, spilling love, fresh and fragile like fruit as it breaks and bleeds under teeth.
sorry my family didn’t teach me that i have a place among others so now i’m weird . sorry

a mouse in a house is a beast of burden. such a small, breakable thing - horrifying. the terror in its blind eyes glistening up at me. its pitiful hands flailing for love, aching with cold and wild desperation. its ears strained and stiff with its whining, whimpering, wailing need. its tail dangling, trailing terrible love behind the dying thing. it’s seeped of life and longing, sweet and soft with rot.
