I find it a little weird that J.J. didn’t realize that Shane and Ilya were way closer than people assumed, and I don’t particularly mean in a romantic sense. Like, no one would send their last words to someone they didn’t deeply care about.
Yes, he did clock feelings from Shane’s end, but it was pretty clear that Shane was important to Ilya too, whether in a romantic or platonic sense.

And suddenly I'm not excited for season two anymore.
I just know that I will be very annoyed.
It's so important to me that everyone who meets Ilya feels safe around him. Shane at age 19 trusting him with his body and his sexuality and his reputation therefore his whole career. Svetlana who left home and could've gone anywhere but chose to move to Boston because guess who also lives there. Every person he's ever hooked up with because that's 100+ of people trusting him and saying yes. Yuna and David who spent less than an hour around him (Ilyushka not Rozanov) and accepted him as Shane's boyfriend even though they've spent the last decade hating him on Shane's behalf. Jackie trusting him with her kids after only meeting him once. Harris's family inviting him over so many times. His neighbors' kids making it a habit to wish him good luck before games. Troy coming out to him when it's his first time saying it out loud. Luca asking him for advice because he's finding it hard to "meet people". Coach Wiebe coming out to him and telling him about the guy he was in love with.
He's the safe space he needed growing up. He's the comfort person he wished for when he felt like he had no one. He's the familiar warm presence who has so much love to give to make up for all the love that was taken away from him.
Just a quick reminder that by the end of the Long Game it is clear that Shane wanted to go public with Ilya.
And Shane knew, more the anyone, the consequences if he and Ilya ever went public. But the plane emergency land made him realize that losing Ilya (and being in a position where he would be forced to suppress his feelings) was his worst fear, in the end. So deciding to propose to Ilya, to be open was a well informed choice.
The plan was always doomed from the start, and it was making both Shane and Ilya miserable in different ways. No wonder Ilya’s depression was becoming worse and Shane was more anxious than ever.
It’s awful that they couldn't do it in their own terms. But narratively, I think, the endgame was always supposed to be Shane and Ilya playing together in the same team, Ilya was just the one who went first.
Shane and Ilya staying in the closet would never be a happy ending.
I love Shane, but you know what? Ilya spent three years building the Centaurs, he deserves to be the captain.
Let Ilya have this.

The thing about Hollanov is, for Shane and Ilya to be together would never be a simple decision, and it would always involve a lot of sacrifices and compromising.
They choose each other anyway.
Man, the Long Game does not make Shane’s story all about “experiencing profound career failures but still being happy as along you get a man”. No, Shane is not the woman from a Hallmark Christmas movie who gives up her career to get together with a mediocre man. Please, that is just a misinterpretation of The Long Game altogether.
Shane suffers career wise after tripgate. That is true. But he didn’t have to give up his dream to play hockey just to get Ilya. Dude, did we miss the whole phone call where Shane decides to come to Ottawa because he knows that with Ottawa he will be able to win more cups and fulfill his dream of winning seven Stanly Cups in total?
Shane is pretty confident that with Ottawa he will win another cup, because by that point Ottawa is a playoffs contender and they literally beat Montreal in game seven. Shane already has three cups and he fully believes he can win four more with the Centaurs. Also, just saying that Ilya’s comment about feeling insulted that he cannot beat Shane untill he cheats is a joke. Like, literally in the next dialogue Shane refutes him and tells him he wouldn’t have won if Shane hadn’t tripped. They are ribbing eachother here, because that is how they work. Using that as “evidence” that Ilya doesn’t console Shane for the bad press he gets for tripgate is not it.
Now, the whole thing about Shane not getting captaincy in Ottawa immediately, as compared to Ilya, who got the C the second he signed up with Ottawa three years ago is not at all comparable. Why? Because Ilya fucking Rozanov is a great hockey player as well!
Like dude, Ilya and Shane are equals! When Ilya got the C in Ottawa three years ago, he was the best player in the team then. And then he spent the next two years building up the team from ground up, and taking them to the second round of playoffs (where they won against Montreal btw). If you really believe that Ilya should give up his C after all of this, just because Shane joined the team then you have fallen for Shane’s weed comment. Ilya wasn’t fooling around for three years with the Centaurs. If the situation was reversed and it was Shane who joined Ottawa in 2018, even he would have taken time to build that team up, because the Centaurs were just bad, with the only decent player being Boodram.
So why should Shane get the C immediately after signing with Ottawa? Because he has three cups already? But he didn’t spend time with the Centaurs, building them up and taking them to playoffs. Ilya did!
It would make more sense for Shane to compete for the Captaincy with Ilya because again, they both are equals. And anyways, career wise Shane has two cups and one Olympic medal more than Ilya. If anything, he will always have more cups than Ilya untill they both retire.
By the way, the Centaurs do not take Shane for granted. They are not doing Shane any “favours” by taking him in. In fact, they were the ones who showed Shane kindness and respect when his own team failed him.
Finally, Shane is not the only one who takes a hit on his career after he is outed. We literally meet all the queer players at the start of TLG, who are coaching at the Irina Foundation camp. They were pretty much kicked out of the NHL for being queer. (Why does no one talk about Max Riley?)
Then there is Ryan Price, who also faced the same toxicity from his team as Shane. And eventually he had to give up hockey entirely because of that, only to follow his partner, Fabian, around for his concerts.
Meanwhile, Shane gets to go to Ottawa and play alongside Ilya and win more cups, because Shane and Ilya playing together in a team is a guaranteed way of winning Stanly Cups.
And honestly it doesn’t really matter what line he even plays at. Like dude if you have watched any sport, the players are moved around in different lines all the time. If anything, Shane should be more annoyed that he has to play with Tanner Dillion lol
(Also the whole talk about Shane getting bad press, which is true. But that doesn’t mean Ilya isn’t getting any bad press too. Like that man is being grilled alive by the Russian press for sure)
(One more thing. We as readers don’t know what amount of salary Shane is getting in Ottawa. In fact we aren’t even told if he is really getting a salary cut when he joins the team. So all these claims about Shane taking a “huge cut” to come to Ottawa don’t hold much weight untill we know the exact figure in the next book. Besides, Shane is a wealthy man. He still has his sponsors and real estate money.)
(Again, when Ilya says here, “but consider maybe your very wealthy husband”, he is not belittling Shane nor is he forcing Shane to take the salary cut. Ilya is very well aware Shane is very rich lol. Like he knows Shane is Mr. Real Estate for a reason.)
So no, Shane didn’t give up his career to be with a mediocre man. That is you reducing Shane to a woman from a hallmark Christmas movie. And also reducing Ilya’s achievements as if he also didn’t win the first draft, a Stanly Cup and a MVP award before going to Ottawa. Why the fuck would Shane even date a mediocre player in the first place? And why the fuck would he “give up” his career for a mediocre player? His competency kink won’t allow it. He is in love with the only other man who can be with him on the top. And that is Ilya Rozanov.
was rereading tlg to double check my thoughts and conclusions today and wow look at what i found…….. shane’s decision to want to publicly come out. inspired by the plane crash reshaping his priorities and convincing him that the rewards of being public about his relationship are better than the temporary and conditional safety of the closet. here he is in technicolor…… making that choice…… of his own volition
‘can you BELIEVE that bastard ilya had the audacity to invite troy and harris to the cottage at the end of the book to terrorize shane’ yeah so shane confronted crowell (who he is terrified of) on troy’s behalf because he was so impressed by the work he’s doing for sexual assault victims and they exchange a ‘brotherly’ hug @ the end of the tripgate game and shane actually likes him a lot and hopes they can be good friends :) when the cens are very nice and kind to shane during the handshake line that’s actually meant to contrast with the cruelty he receives from his own team back in the locker room :) if shane hypothetically has a problem with guests at his cottage maybe he can open his mouth (if you guys still think he has a tongue!) and express that :)
Ilya in the passage above is close to spiraling, close to descending into a hopeless moment where he feels isolated from everyone around him, but the spell is broken only by a lighthearted moment where Troy shows interest in him and his plans for the summer. Harris and I will be around all summer. We’d like to hang out. Bring your dog. It’s also important that this happens after they lose the playoffs. Troy isn’t looking to Ilya to just be his captain and sounding board, he’s looking for friendship, and in doing so reassures Ilya that they are friends. Then, because someone reaches out, Ilya is able to offer the same in return. Connection. I think this is a really effective way of illustrating how depression inside your mind feels complex and insurmountable, not to mention isolating, but something simple like a brief moment of connection with a friend can bring you out of it and provide relief. Not forever, but at least for the moment.

I want to point out that it was not that Ilya wanted to come out publicly with Shane (nor would he ever force Shane to, or give him any type of ultimatum) as much as he only wanted to be open to a few friends because he felt isolated and needed his own support system.
Because, yes, although the depression definitely didn't help, keeping a big secret also made difficult for him to connect with people.
People complaining about Ilya’s reaction with Hayden after he accidentally outed them is such a weird take for me.
The narrative is pretty clear that Shane would defend Hayden had Ilya got angry at Hayden.
Shane was distressed enough, so Ilya having a violent reaction would only make things worse. Shane being immediately relieved when Ilya assured Hayden that it was not Hayden’s fault is proof that Ilya made the right decision.
So really, what Ilya was supposed to do?
I don’t like Hayden at all, and Shane had every reason to be upset at him, but to be honest I don't think Ilya was in a position where he was allowed to be angry at Hayden.

Some people act like they know what's best for Shane when really, Shane knows what's best for Shane.
Part of his story in TLG is figuring out who he is and what he wants outside of hockey. He is putting himself (emotionally and physically) through the wringer for hockey, has just earned a 3rd cup, but he's still not happy. After Everything™️, he *decides* he's done with Montreal, tells his agent that Ottawa is his *first* choice, and realizes looking after his mental health (and his husband’s) is what he values most.
And he's STILL incredible at hockey and gets to have FUN again playing it (with other VERY GOOD players). He relaxes a little bit about his diet and routines because he feels like he now has more control over other aspects of his life. His hometown *loves* him and his parents are closer and the team is nice. That's a HEA, babes. 💘

I've been seeing a lovely gifset going around of the "sometimes I think I would have told them already" moment, and I always interpreted that to mean "I would have told them I was gay, but I love my parents so much and I care about you so deeply that I can't talk about being gay without talking about you and that would ruin everything right now so I just can't" truly a moment of "if I loved you less I might be able to talk about it more"
Why do people keep acting like Ilya is this evil villain when Dallas Kent is right there is a mystery to me.
