Aizone FW13
In July I was asked by the wonderful AD Darhil Crooks to again work with one of my new favorite clients; The Atlantic. I was asked to do several illustrations for a fictional piece on Lee Harvey Oswald, and what if he had not assassinated JFK on November 22 1963. Not only is the story beautifully written, but the fact that I am the sort of guy that names his dog J. W. Booth…well, I really enjoyed this project. And since The Atlantic has always been very open to my “artistic” ideas, I was really able to explore a limited pallet and use some colors that people don’t normally expect out of my work (yeah, it is really really pink).
See? I told you I wasn’t dead. It is just that when my studio is 95 degrees on a good day, the last thing I want to do is spend extra time in there outside of work. I hate to be the kind of guy who complains about the weather, but good lord am I excited for fall to finally come rollin’ in.
I should also note that the shop on my website is currently down. After a very long and annoying battle with Paypal I have decided to pull up my stakes and head for greener pastures. There is a new shop in the works, with new prints as well as original artwork. And best of all; I will soon be offering international shipping for all of you folks that have been bugging me for years about it.
My undying Art Director crush on Chelsea Cardinal continues with these pieces we worked on together for an article about the attack on Camp Bastion by fifteen Taliban dressed as American soldiers, for this months GQ Magazine. The article is a sobering read, and tackling it as an illustrator was an equally humbling experience. I actually learned a lot about my own technique while working on this project, and hopefully acquired some skills that I can bring to the table in the future. 5 years ago I would have never worried about making a piece too dark, or using colors that were too washed out….but hey, I guess I use pink now so who knows.
A special thank you to my friend Jake DesRosiers, who was an endless amount of help throughout this whole project.
