Yeah, that's a very classical take on the trope. I think it's also the one I've read the most when people do it. The core of it is seeking catharsis from someone who has hurt and changed you for it. Who has now made you more wary to share yourself with others. I think that is a vindicating feeling for many people, especially because we often never get to have that closure with other people in real life. The resolution of the scenario is Kaiba recognizing the harm he has done in the past and trying to convince/make it up to Jou to give him a second chance. He's also changed! He's learned to appreciate who matters in the present!

So Jounouchi loves Kaiba, but he's also kind of subconsciously afraid of what staying with him means. Because Kaiba doesn't let things go. Kaiba doesn't let people go, as he so thoroughly proves in DSoD. So maybe one day the sense of being owned gets to be too smothering, or maybe Jounouchi finds an engagement ring and panics, maybe it's Jounouchi's own feelings that send him running. The important part is that he leaves, and he does it in such a way that ensures Kaiba won’t look for him.

And then years go by, and Jounouchi finally comes back, and when he does he realizes that he very much wants Kaiba back. And then has to somehow find a way to win him over again.

I didn't overthink the cards too much... but the clothing was difficult and caused a ton of problems

I didn't expect the result to turn out this vibrant in the end, but I'm happy with how it came out
