Don't rent from Penske for Burning Man
I just showed up to pick up a well priced 26' moving truck from Penske to pack all the stuff for our 20-person Burning Man camp. Turns out they have a company policy specifically against renting to burners. Apparently a couple of their trucks were burnt to the ground in past years. Even if I hadn't told them we were going to burning man (which would have been smart on my part, but I trust people a lot) we probably would have had to make it look like we didn't go to burning man upon return, which would have taken a lot f work. Thankfully we had a backup truck reserved with Budget. The Budget place in Eugene is run by a bunch of really chill guys. It's only a bit more expensive. The Penske guy was actually nice enough to give me a call afterward and apologize. He even said he wish he hadn't asked where I was going so he could have rented it to me. He said to come to him next year and tell him I'm going to San Diego. He is a nice guy but I don't really want to rent from an anti-burning man company anyway. Lesson learned: tell any company that you're going to Reno (and a musician friend has a show there with a bunch of gear or something). Don't say burning man. Also, pay for full coverage insurance. You will probably need it.
The finalized sign. EL wire and all!!!
Panorama of the backyard with our giant structure and all of gear for the camp. And lovely Zach swinging from the poles.
Futon frame built with 3 sheets of plywood. Thanks to playa tech for the schematics!!

Our camp sign in the making.
Sign making in progress.
Yona's beautiful EL wire vest. 60 ft EL wire. 40 hours of sewing. Win.
Planned Parenthood donated two boxes of safer sex supplies to our camp. Come by 2:45 and dandelion. We will put them in the public area so you can enjoy them.
So you're on the playa and you think "god damn, all I've had is smoothies for the last two days, I want something filling, but oh MAN is it hot and I don't want to cook anything. I could go over to that [bacon camp](www.flickr.com/photos/ollythelimey/3490780329/), but they make you do some crazy shit for bacon. What am I to do?!" That's where burritos come in. We decided to cook burritos and freeze them so our camp could easily have hand-held portable meals. ## Ingredients * Quinoa * Rice * Beans * Lentils * Tempeh * Veggies * Sauces (Peanut, Salsa, Curry, Pesto) * Cheese ## Quantity We planned to have a burrito per person every other day for the 8 days of the burn. With 15 people that's 60 burritos. We ended up making **110**. Oops? ## Size matters We bought "burrito sized" tortillas. And we estimated 1/2 cup of grains, 1/2 cup of protein, and 1/2 cup of veggies per burrito. We ended up doing about 1/5 cup of each to fit in these TINY ASS tortillas we bought. Overall I think this is a good idea. Your appetite goes down on the playa, so having smaller portions (and more burritos) is a good things. ## Process We used this spreadsheet to know how many of each type (rice/quinoa, tempeh/lentils/beans, peanut/curry/pesto/salsa, cheese/no-cheese) to make: http://d.pr/KzgL We ended up with a kick ass assembly line by the end. Jessilyn alternated between the grain/proteins/sauces according to the spreadsheet. She put in veggies. Then passed it off (on a plate) to Jeremy who rolled it, added cheese if the spreadsheet so, wrapped it in foil and marked it. The marking system went like this. 4 letters. [GRAIN] [PROTEIN] [SAUCE] [CHEESE] So QTPC is Quinoa, Tempeh, Peanut, Cheese. RLO is Rice, Lentils, pestO, no cheese. ## Cooking at the burn The burritos will be frozen, so how we will enjoy our handheld meal? We plan to thaw out a days worth of burritos every other day. You can eat them cold (if you want to be boring). OR you could fry them in a pan on the camp stove for 5 minutes (with a bit of butter/oil) and have the most fucking delicious thing ever! Delicious!

What is BEyONd FIRE doing at the burn?
BEyONd FIRE – We’ll be hosting demonstrations, talks, and interactivity exhibitions for the community with a focus on heat and fire: Yoga, group movement, meditation, cooking with fermentation, lectures and activities on personal empowerment and ways to fuel personal passions, and free hugs.
Thank you for going on this adventure with me! We don't go to Burning Man because it's a cruise. It's not a pleasant environment in which we can kick back and be waited on. We go there because it's the opposite. We go there because we have grown soft. We have removed almost entirely any external dangerous environmental influence from our lives, and it has pulled us apart from one another. We go to Burning Man to say to the world "oh yeah? This is the worst you have? This? This is it? This is the most inhospitibal environment you can come up with? I'm just surprised, you see, because all it takes for me to live here is the smallest bit of effort and cooperation. It takes me little more than a glance at those around me - these superb individuals with whom I share my life - and we live here. Not just live, but thrive." And you are those people. We don't go to Burning Man because it will be easy. These meetings are not easy. In fact they're very hard. But we're not doing this for ease. We're not doing this for comfort. We're doing it because it's hard. We're doing it because everything else is too easy. If this same group of people put their effort into anything else, it would be unworthy. It would taste bland. We are traveling to one of the most inhospitable environments on the entire planet and spending a week there because anything else would not allow us to experience the full potential of who we are as a community. I love you all :) ♥

Dandelion & 2:45
We've been placed as a theme camp. You'll be able to find us at Dandelion & 2:45. More details to come!
To “Burn” is to become an agent of open possibility, creating a liminal space where something amazing can happen and anyone can join. It doesn’t matter why you do it, what you think is happening, or what you want to get out of it. You may not even get what you expect out of it, because you’ve given up acting as an agent of social control and have instead invited everyone to play: you created the game but it’s not your game. It’s a gift.

Beyond Fire
Our camp is named 'BEyONd FIRE'.
We put two ideas together to make something new:
Be On Fire
Beyond Fire
Be On Fire
We drew the first name from this essay by Fake Grimlock about passion and dedication:
WORLD IS COLD. YOU MUST LIGHT WORLD ON FIRE.
YOUR FIRE.
YOU. MUST. BURN.
In our bi-weekly camp planning meetings, our travels to Burning Man, and creating our camp, we want to share our warmth and fire and passion as we make a new and beautiful community together.
We want to pool our energy and light the world on fire.
Beyond Fire
What's after Burning Man?
A return to the outside world, a cooling of the flame, and a year until the community reconvenes.
The fire we all shared will still be there burning under the skin. But it'll be a colder fire. A less intense burn.
We want to keep that heat high for the full year.
Our plan is to share our fire and passion with everyone we meet at Burning Man. We'll be hosting demonstrations, talks, and interactivity exhibitions for the community with a focus on heat and fire:
Yoga demonstrations and classes
Group movement / juggling exhibitions and activities
Dedicated time + space for individual and group meditation
Lectures and activities on goal setting, personal empowerment, and ways to fuel personal passions
Classes on cooking food through pickeling
Free Hugs on the playa
The fire we're building will still be there when we break down camp and drive back to Eugene.
We just want to make sure we share it with everyone we meet at Burning Man this year.
We want to help everyone Be On Fire as we move Beyond Fire.
Thanks for reading. Love you.
