They should not be confused with other Mecha Sonics also in this tournament

It was his original identity was being a Sonic robot. But he grew. We saw the whole progress from being a Sonic robot into his own person. He became more. He managed to break free from his programming. He even tried to extend that to Metal Sonic.

Shard still has insecurities about his past. He wants to make peace with those he fought before, especially Sonic. He knows as long as Eggman is out there, there will be people who fear him. But he still tries.

While Endangered Species was a let down, it gave us the Sonic and Shard team up people wanted since he was reintroduced as a Secret Freedom Fighter. He still has an ego, but he no long tries to be better than Sonic. He has more respect for his fleshy counterpart. Heck, he even came up with an idea to save Sally. It wasn't complete forgiveness, but it was a step in the right direction. Just thinking about what might have been with them.

Shard has willingly made the sacrificial play more than once. Not just to save Sonic and Tails from the volcano, but against Metal Sonic to save Antoine and everyone in New Mobotropolis.

His ending was tragic, but despite his short time on screen since his return, Shard has grown into one of the most popular Archie exclusive characters.
